This app is just a free gift to the few remaining Mac users here...

foolcontact is a "grid" based browser for R3D clips with roll-over scrubbing (a bit like iPhoto albums) and can open in RED Player / Open in RCX / reveal in Finder upon double clicking

Very cool indeed.

One bug report. If you drag in trimmed R3Ds such that there are two or more sub-clips trimmed from one original clip, the app gets a bit confused and flickers between the two clips as you scrub. It also initially shows the same thumbnail for both instances.

One feature request. Is it possible to have a modifier key that you can hold as you move the mouse out of a thumbnail, so that the poster frame is frozen? Does that make sense?

Thanks for the feedback Nick, will fix that trim issue asap !
will also see about adding a key to freeze or maybe even better a key to freeze and set the poster frame in the RMD...

... check also this video if you haven't seen it yet : http://vimeo.com/foolcolor/metabox

edit :
v 1.01 now online fixes the 'multi trimmed' clip issue

Downloaded it, and what an awesome free app, really like the look and functionality. And its FREE!!!!
Great work Mikael, look forward to seeing the development of this.

Andrew.

This is awesome. Ive only tested it briefly, but is insanely awesome.

I just found this thread.
How I wish I had this a few months ago!
At least now I will have it in time for our next big project. I got Foolcontact already, and will definitely get Foolcat as well. Brilliant Mikael. Keep up the good work.

Any chance of seeing it in the App store?

About having my apps in the app store...

pros :
- I could code sign them and be 'gate keeper' approved (altho I would have to look into sandboxing my apps... which I have no clue yet)
- maybe it would bring more users and more sales for foolcat (altho it is a niche product so the market is very limited I think)

cons :
- any update would have to go thru Apple and might delay buxfixes or updates (I do fix bugs quite quickly when reported)
- I might have to deal with people who bought the app and are not happy thinking it would have worked with their BMCC or other camera...
- give 30% of my already anemic profits to Apple

But I'll think about it... The day I release a foolcat version for Alexa or Prores files maybe it will be worth going to the app store... but right now I'm 100% RED so only posted it here.

Thanks for posting your thoughts on the App store, I see why that dosen´t make much sense (at least not at this stage). I just have to go find my old PayPal info, shuld be around somewhere..

Mikael,
what exactly does this app do? Or what can it do and why is it essential? Is it able to act as a catalog for say keeping track of stock footage: meta-tagging; locations in folders; make proxies etc? I'm trying to see what functionality it could have for a user.
thanks,

Hello Johnny

foolcontact doesn't DO much... and is in no way essential...
it is basically a free R3D browser and a way to quickly identify a clip from a folder and open it up in RCX or REDPlayer.

my other app foolcat will do R3D catalogs as HTML or pdfs, this can serve as daily report of what was shot (useful as a quick reference for editorial or on set) with a bunch of metadata. I also have another app in the work that will allow metadata ingest but it is ready yet... you can have a quick preview of it on vimeo (it is called metabox)

thanks for your interest and you can always give my apps a try (foolcontact is 100% free and foolcat works in demo mode with up to 5 clips) and see if it is of any use to you or not...

I got both apps today, and I'm very happy with them. They don't do that much, but I have really missed a way to quickly get an overview of my footage.
All the meta data is there as well and you can even compare log files with your rmd files just by hovering the mouse over the thumbnail.

I've just been going through 2 months of footage using redcinex and I really missed something like Foolcat and Foolcontact to get a quicker overview. At least I have it for my next project.

Thanks again

I have them both and like them very much.

I have had a crashing issue with foolcontact on OSX 10.8 which I think is due to my attempting to drag too many folders on to the load scree. Seems to have gone away now that I do it correctly.

Highly recommended.

I had a few crashes, and sent a mail to Mikael, he replied very fast and within 20 minutes and a few emails we found the culprit.
it was a very short clip, not even a frame, that also showed up in redcinex as offline.
It was something that happened when I tried to do a time laps and I had to start and stop it ver quickly and something went wrong during the recording. I deleted that 12kb file and everything ran smoothly again.
Impressed with Mikaels very quick replies.
