REDcolor and REDgamma is really going to make difference. I really love this deal. I buy a camera that is good, BUT as time goes bye, the camera and the tools get improved and I get this amazing new tech for ... freee! The magnitude of good will and customer satisfactions is beyond words!!!! The only problem is that I'm definitely hooked on red.. probably forever.

Thank you

Thanks RED TEAM for working so hard through the holidays!

About RedFilm gamma

About RedFilm gamma

You really are going to love this. It includes...

2. New Gamma.
REDgamma. It is a gamma that uses more information from RAW than REC 709 or REDspace. It matches your meter. It looks fantastic. The standard REDgamma is fairly flat and ready to grade. REDfilm is a gamma that emulates scanned film... for those traditionalists.

Jim

Jim,

Need little bit more info about RedFilm gamma. Is it mimic any film stock gamma something like Kodak 2383 / fuji stock?

...two years after... RAW still giving us more and more...

Ooooh! those crazy canadians!!

Red team: Los Angeles wives do not begin scream if they see you with your macbook on christmas???

Congrats!

Jim, it's official, you and your team are nuts...not to mention the rest of us checking in on REDuser during christmas day.
I must not be the only one out there spending Christmas with his wife's family down in Virginia. Thank god the wifi works now...
Can't wait to go through the footage from a feature I just wrapped and start processing some of it out with all this new color science.
Looking forward to all the new stuff in Feb.
Thanks for all of your "passion".

great news !

cant wait to see the difference with the new color and gamma options..... and cant wait to send the R1 cams in for sensor upgrade.... ohhh my god coming year will be a wonderful one....

i love to be a nut.... this extremely passionate one....

btw, happy new year...

thx

1. New Color Space.
More accurate color science and a new color space called REDcolor.

2. New Gamma.
REDgamma. It is a gamma that uses more information from RAW than REC 709 or REDspace.

Are you using some of this color science now ? Snappy shot seems like it's already in more precise color science and in some aspects improved Redcode also.

Jim, a question;

So M-X is estimated to be 1.5 - 2 stops more sensitive. With the new color science, do you think you'll start to throw around different 'effective' sensitivity numbers?

this has been answered Niko. Somewhere between 320-1000 might be the recomended ISO.

RedFilm sounds amazing. Really excited to see that.

Any chance we'll see Red Day footage and goodies popping up online for us non-US Redheads? :001_smile:

I'll make a best guess at this. I doubt very much that RED is going to go out of it's way to make it's sensors emulate any specific film stock. RED has a very pleasing and unique look all on it's own.

My hunch is that REDFILM will be a way to set your gamma space if you KNOW that you will be finishing to film. I also think that this will be more of a post tool than a camera tool.

If you are doing a filmout you might want to set your gamma space to REDFILM when you are exporting DPX files so that you are providing a file for grading that has the most lattitude if you are going to finsih on film.

I doubt very much that it will be a film stock emulator and if it does emulate a fiilm stock it would most likely be an intermediate film stock which is the type of film used in DI's or for an ARRILASER. TO maximize the lattidue of intermediate the film print.

Nice to know I wasn't the only one with work on the mind :)

I think these advancements in post are equally as monumental as the hardware itself. As I felt the Red One camera was a huge leap for the business and creativity it seems like the software side of things is equally important. Perhaps more in some ways. ISA 2000 will change production in a very significant ways. Wow - not needing the lighting systems in the same way... wow!

I don't think there has ever been in the history of business a situation like this where the founder of a company has been so open with his customers. Think about it for a minute and tell me when you have ever seen something like this. There have been times when Jim has been online here at 2am in the morning posting. Steve Jobs doesn't do this and neither does whoever is running Sony. It isn't like Red is making toothpicks or something. I think history will show that this is something incredible.

Not to take anything away from Jim's openness, but it is different for a privately held company.

Public companies like Sony, Apple, Avid, Adobe, etc. are severely limited by federal laws on how they talk about development and future products because it could be used to manipulate stock prices.

Good call... REDcolor and REDgamma do NOT clip the highlights (as REDspace has a tendency to do). One of the big advantages. Everything we are doing is designed to use the full range available in RAW... and look good.

Jim

This is good news. I take it that means if something is at 99 IRE or 104 IRE in RAW it won't become 108+ IRE in the new REDgamma? That was always my issue with REDspace- if you exposed by it, you would not be taking full advantage of the RAW latitude and if you exposed by RAW and then applied it, you would be boosting highlights to clip. REDgamma sounds great. WIll it come in one flavor or will there be multiple options for different types of curves (aside from REDfilm)? Looking forward to seeing it in action.

Not to mention that Jim appears to not be a "CEO" in the normal sense. He's more like 1st among peers in the sense that he works among his employees and is the decision maker with (so far) good judgement. My only concern is that he may burn out. On the other hand, he seems to be enjoying doing this and if it is as he says, his passion, then I don't think we as customers ever need worry about the company going stale.

It is something incredible as the original post stated. I for one welcome the openness and honesty and find it a breath of fresh air that Red are leading the way and no small part of the lead is its openness. I don't live in the US but still find it baffling that on one hand the US seems to be very open place and yet its laws seem to be extremely restrictive. Whatever, keep it open and honest Jim.
