  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Fixed EF Mount

I was super psyched about this camera and thinking of placing an order but I have to say that fixed EF mount is a bit of a deal breaker for me. I'm too invested in other mounts and also not a fan of Canon lenses. Are we likely to see other mounts?

Thanks,
Head over to the Lens part of the board. There is ALOT of info on making things work over there. Lenses like Contax Zeiss and Leica R's are phenomenal on the Canon mount.

It's basically a C300 killer, which was kinda dead already.

You know absolutely nothing about the industry with this stupid quote. Sweeping ignorance is what turns people off of RED shooters. I won't even waste my time explaining why. RAVEN will sell very well and a great option. Well done RED.

i also don't understand why they didn't keep with the non fixed mount system AL mounts are cheap for presumers already? which makes me think Jarreds specific comments about electric lenses being useful is why they made this move and I'm hoping for Alexa Studio like pulling on Raven ideally but no idea how well EF works in the real world even if u set fool control to be very insensitive would it suffer from the traditional mechanical limitations of EF i wonder?

Two words.

Manufacturing costs.

RED can do a lot to make RAVEN more expensive and be closer to Scarlet, Epic, and Weapon. However, that isn't what RAVEN is about.

The EF Mount is a bit different than our DSMC Mounts too. It's a bit more robust in a couple ways.

Phil are you getting one?

Phil are you getting one?

Perhaps. I can't let you guys have all the fun :)

Seriously though. If I was where I was back in 2011 before I worked and saved up for my first Scarlet-X Mysterium-X body I wouldn't have even blinked before putting in a deposit on RAVEN. And RAVEN has the Dragon sensor in there. It's sort of a no brainer if you can financially pull it off and if it fits your needs.

I remember a see through 3D render of "Red 3k for 3k" where you could see the lens, lens mount and the sensor being mostly one and the same part. I think that's it.
I agree with Phil, as a starter without any other gear, a Raven is the way to go.

Contax, Leica... these lenses are great but they are manual lenses. I love them too, but when you already have Dragons PL fully accessorized cameras, you love the opportunity to make Raven a "full auto" camera with the less gear on it possible.

I understand the points made, and they are good points I guess, but that means the camera is, unfortunately, not for me. My lenses are a part of my work and they are not Canon and can not be adapted. I stopped using Canon lenses a while back because relatively they are soft and I'm not keen on the colour. I find them quite boring and generic or homogenised in look.

I think that's a shame because I would plan to one day step up to the Epic or Weapon and while this new camera really is amazing, and a brilliant way to get new users in, I feel that is really limiting the intake by constraining things to Canon lenses.

And Marketing.
For the same reasons this camera isn't for everybody is how Red needs to keep the higher priced products separate. Fixed lens mount not only keeps the costs down but makes it attractive to the folks who are all over C300's or step up from DSLR type shooters, perfect transition camera. Where those who do more Pro type work may buy it for a B camera but unlikely to give up their bigger sensor or changeable lens mounts etc. Fixed lens mount is a smart move to help keep the products separated, along with smaller sensor and more limited ability, etc. It all makes perfect sense even the pro res for the masses and intro to Raw work. If it were me I might have handicapped the frame rate a bit more to say 60 fps to keep that part for other cameras, but Red is very generous.

I can't believe that companies like Red and BMD don't come up with their own, universal mount and a range of adaptors. No need for allen screws, just a lock-down bayonet.

Anyway, as stated, EF has the short flange distance that allows adaptors to most other mounts and there are a fair few EF mount cine lenses out there.

In a recent interview Zeiss discussed this concept. However, the logistics are mind boggling and puts us in a similar place in some ways to where we are today.

Isco had a great prototype interchangeable system that was used on very small amount of lenses. T4 wasn't bad, but needed to be more robust.

allstar had a great red certified mounting system for damn near any mount on DSMC1, so i think it will be all worked out... they seemed to have some real tricks up their sleeves as far as options went!

I ended up not going through with my Deposit.

The next day it didn't seem like a great idea, I guess I got too exited during the announcement.

I would have pulled the trigger if they did a S35 4.5K Sensor with Interchangeable Mount.

Red has been so much about versatility and customization its very strange to see them go Fixed mount.

I don't own any EOS glass and due to the crop you need to live with a Tokina 11-20 & Sigma 18-35 to get decent focal lengths. It's hard to go from Hi-End glass to Canon Zooms, not the same then I have to get them Re-Housed by G.L. Optics if my AC's wanna pull focus on them with out complaining.

That's not true. Sure it will be 15% narrower, but that's not a big deal.

Everybody speaks of EF manual and AC friendly lenses, but to me that's not the point of Raven.
Raven is electronic lenses only. If you want manual, go get the Scarlets. These are the models you're looking for.

Not sure I agree Raven is only for electronic glass.

Cinemodded/Leitaxed Contax, Leica R, ZF/ZE, Nikon and FD glass should also work just fine on RAVEN, and are all manual. As will CP2s and CNEs. And OTUS. And the new CP Zooms. And Rokinons. And Xeens. And GL. And All Star.

There's no shortage of good manual EOS glass for RAVEN - this is presumably why EOS mount was chosen (somehing Jarred I believe hinted at)!

Best.

I am getting lots of emails asking about top end wide angle zooms available for purchase or rent in EF mount, here are just a few. These all have mid and long zooms version available in the same family with EF mount as well, but here are just the wides:

I've shot a fair amount with that Canon CN-E 14.5-60mm T2.6. It pairs pretty nicely on Dragon.

Honestly, this camera is available since 2011, it's called Scarlet.

Yea but I only have $9,950

$16,700 doesn't work for me.

Honestly I have my heart set on a Epic-X MX Sensor saw one on FB for $12,000 Side SSD & Mount + Rocket

I need a camera to invest in cause it's been a year since I sold my Scarlet-X and an F3 isn't the funest to shot on but will put out great images paired with a recorder.

I miss R3D files its my style of preferred workflow and now with ProRes you get it all I really like the new Weapons and Raven for that.

The idea of a 2nd Raven is pretty cool between Raven & Scarlet Dragon.

I think Weapon has 2 models too, well 3 if you count the 8K sensor

I agree with you. Crop Factor is a little helper term to get your fov's right when you switch(!) from one format to other. Otherwise it should get banned from everyone's head and should never be used as technical term.

But S35 isn't right. ;) Academy 35 is the right film-stock to compare RAVEN with, which is a good piece smaller than S35

I wouldn't say comparing Raven to S35 isn't right...you can compare any format against another. It all depends on your frame of reference and relevance.

Yes, Academy 35 is much closer in size to Dragon at 4K. However, I wouldn't expect saying Academy 35 means all that much to people who are using FF35 crop factor numbers in the way they are.

Super35 is a much more common size and people have at least some idea how big that is based on all the sensors that are approximately the same size.
