  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

First Look: Breakthrough Filters Direct Drop-In Filters (behind the lens)

Don't mind being the dude who write about this, but regarding the delays on this thing....

Myself and several other have been testing this aggressively on shoots and during spare time. In particular since I have access to a large library of lenses, lens mounting depth and compatibility became a concern. Additionally the needs of these Drop-Ins from their photographic background versus implementation for film production use could use some refinement. What BF did was create a positive locking mechanism to physically hold the filters in there rigidly so they don't get knocked out via handheld or things like car setups.

Particularly I also implored them to have the adjustment wheel on the VND, CPL, and CPL ND Combo Filters to be 0.8 modulus geared for use with focus motors or mechanical pulling.

The other critical feature I was looking for was on the VND itself to have clearly marked density stops on the wheel.

I mentioned the importance of getting this right for filmmakers a while back while some burning conversation arose online, but this is exactly why it's better to take the time necessary to execute a design more fitting for motion picture professionals.

A little slice of behind the scenes into my life regarding a lot of gear I get early on. I have a lens here that's been unreleased for over 2 years for instance that has undergone a great deal of costly design revisions.

Delays are frustrating, but this is a good example of a manufacturer listening to user feedback and creating a more robust and functional product. I wish that more who float around this arena would take feedback more critically. Thankfully a bunch do though.

These look great, but gonna have to wait till the Red electronic ND RF/PL comes available before making any purchase decisions.

Understandable! Controllable ND within camera *i hope* is valuable.

More so, the stepped density positions with press button over dial. It doesn't seem, at least from their website that this is implemented/labeled clear in their design. Or maybe just not yet? (based on your post about redesign causing the delays for good reason). Another advantage of Breakthru would be other filter types in their lineup. I definitely think this is a great option they made here and at a decent price tag. Not to mention with the Red ND option, we have yet to see how neutral it is.

What is this chart?
Their site lacks a bit of informations.
Is it so that you can have more lenses choices that protrude behind the mount with Kippertie than with DFM mounts?

Will their X4 VND drop into the Canon EF to RF adapter that I got from RED for my Komodo? Or must I wait for their adapter to be completed?

Can you or anyone else confirm whether the Meike drop in EF to RF mount works with the latest X4 VND? There seem to be mixed reports on youtube. Thanks
I don’t have the Meike adapter, though I do have the Breakthrough x4 vnd. (If someone wants to send me one or wants to come to Brooklyn with theirs, happy to try.)

Does Breakthrough make an EF to EF Mount for NDs?
Not 100% sure I understand what you’re asking, but this doesn’t sound like something that could be made. If you’re putting an EF mount lens on an EF mount camera, there’s no room for a filter unit in between. These types of drop-in filter mounts are predicated on having the space between a shallow mirrorless mount (e.g. RF, E, etc.) and a deeper legacy mount (e.g. EF, PL, Nikon F).

(The flange distance must remain the same for the lens to work properly, barring some kind of additional optical element that would likely degrade quality.)

Hi there, any long(er) term reviews of the Breakthrough DMF or people who have use both the Kippertie and Breakthrough? Would be nice to hear. Thanks.

I’ve been running the Breakthrough DFM on my Komodo for about six months and it’s held up solid. The drop-in filters sit snug and swapping them out is faster than fiddling with a matte box. I did notice a tiny bit of play after heavy use but nothing that affected my shots

Thanks for sharing. Do you use the VND or the fixed stop drop in NDs?

Yeah I’ve tried both and ended up sticking with the fixed stops. VNDs were convenient but gave me weird color shifts and softness on the edges
