  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Fincher + Probst = Xenomorph - Mindhunter Camera Dept.

Dumb question, but bear with me. Why is there no top handle on the camera? Doesn't that affect how you grab the camera to move it around? From say, shoulder to tripod to hi-hat?

I guess there must be a reason for the camera not to have a top handle, or am I missing something here?

Not a dumb question. Top Handles in general make it much easier to move the camera around, but aren't always needed or wanted.

In the case of the Xenomorphs I'm guessing hauling these guys around is a two hand hug sort of thing. Which isn't a new thing when it comes to motion picture cameras. Also, you can just plop it on your shoulder pretty easily.

Something that did come to mind is jib and crane filming. I wonder if there's a few smaller DSMC2 Weapon on that set for that sort of activity. The Xenomorphs aren't that heavy and also could be used in those setups I imagine.

Carts caught my eye, too.....would love to know what's inside.

Fincher has been optimizing a lot of things on his productions. I swung by during Gone Girl a few times and the trucks were insanely neat, organized, and clutter free. I told Jeff that it's the cleanest I've ever seen any truck at some point in passing. The metal carts as far as I know double as storage and on set deployment. They are narrow and fit through doorways. Don't know if the monitors themselves are stored in there, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were.

RED's Sean Ruggeri has brought the bruiser out to Pittsburgh. Xenomorphs taking a break near a tree:

You can tell mr. Fincher next time you see him that you disagree with everything he wanted :)
Everything about that post was fucking spot-on, and more than a couple people have said the same things. I've never seen a bigger circle-jerk than this fucking thread. I stopped visiting this forum a while back, but this has definitely made it easier to leave it for good!

I thought this thread was pretty harmless myself.

Fincher made a custom RED camera. That's cool. I guess you don't have to like it - but leave the entire forum because of it?

Seems kind of extreme.

Personally, btw Reduser and CML...I'm good....

Your on ignore now, so it doesn't much matter to me. I personally don't want to read non-sense like your post, what I'd really like is to understand the new zaxnet flow integration into wireless audio and metadata (i'm assuming this is using zaxnet).

The return of Mr. Grumpy Pants.

This thread is about one of the best directors and best DPs working with some of the best custom cameras in the world. Of course it's a circle-jerk. That's kind of the point of on an online form where people discuss specific topics and nerd-out together, isn't that why we are all here? Friendly discussions among working professionals. Some will disagree and some will defend- again that's the point.

Isn't that a cute new urban phrase airing across the globe in a domain working with visuals.

Your problem can be easily avoided with accurate usage of logic.

A: John likes his camera this way and has it made for him.
B: Tom has different priorities.
C: Frank suggests to Tom that John has different priorities than Tom which is why the custom design for Tom.

Extremely cool stuff. Thank You for sharing.

And Ultimate Kudos on the 'Mindhunter' show. I still recall the thrill of reading your '97 'AC' article on 'The Game' with Fincher & Savides {RIP}. It was truly inspirational, and brilliantly captured the creative charge of that pairing, on that film, at that time.

We've come a long way ~ from the Platinums & GIIs Panavsion painted black for Fincher on 'The Game' to...this!

A long way indeed ~ congratulations again Mr Probst; i can't wait to see your work with Fincher.

That's a very good memory for a by line on a nearly 20 year old article I wrote! Thanks for acknowledging that piece. Back in my more frequent article writing days I fanatically pursued filmmakers I was interested in. Fincher was at the top of the list so to be working with him now is a crazy realization of that pursuit which began over 20 years ago... It just goes to show, ya never know!

As a Fincher devotee I found your 'AC' work on 'The Game', 'Fight Club' & 'Panic Room' to be the most rewarding and inspirational writing about his work at that time. It broadened my understanding of the craft and heightened my enjoyment of the art: Thank You.

I think it's somewhat...cool...that someone who so brilliantly captured the, shall we say, celluloid phase of Fincher's career is now a fully-fledged comrade & collaborator at the height (?) of his digital phase: Good work.

any new pics or info?

A & B...side by side...side on...on-set ~

Have a good weekend

I hope I'm not being too invasive with this question, but Mr. Probst, why did you and Fincher decide on 6k instead of 8k?

Obviously the cameras could shoot 8k if they chose to do so.

But maybe they choose not to because they are shooting for Netflix which suggest streaming. They probably plan on shooting so precise that they don't feel the need to reframe from 8k in post... or archive for Japanese broadcast content.

Triangulation of Weaponry...?

...or your ABC of Fincher, right there.

That is one cool BTS shot!
