  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Final Cut Pro X Released

Not that I want my money back cause I want to give it a chance, but what happens to your app when you get a refund. Does it still work?

Yes, as far as I know, as I don't think the app checks against your app store account registration. But I'll have to re-buy if I want future updates or want to download it again. I really didn't want to do the refund thing, but I felt I had to in this case and really think all of those who find the lack of XML and/or EDL support inexcusable to do the same. Or to do the same if you find the lack of any other FCP7 and earlier feature to be inexcusable. I can understand not having support for R3D and other formats right now. I can understand a lot of the missing features on initial release. But if this is truly meant to be a professional editing software, they need to cover the bases and deliver the primary functionality that makes a "professional" editing software. And first and foremost is the ability to integrate that software into professional workflows.

There's a lot I do like about FCPX. There are a lot of promising aspects to it. But at this time, I feel I have to make a statement in the best way I can, to not financially support the product. Since it does not fit my needs in any capacity, whereas the now 3 year old version it has supplanted still can, although not as elegantly as what the other guys are now offering.

FCPX can't even load our current FCP7 or previous projects and there's not a statement about that what-so-ever. Just a bunch of wild-ass rumors, some claiming that's coming in a future update (like these people actually know, yeah, right) and others claiming it will never happen. WTF... Seriously. Adobe Premiere imports FCP6 and 7 projects just fine.

And to think, I though Larry Jordan was over reacting.

There have been a lot of fears in the industry that Apple is slowly abandoning the professional user base. Many of us who like Apple's business model and approach to hardware/software often find ourselves convinced that this is not the case. When Steve Jobs says that he wants Apple products and solutions to be a part of all aspects of media; from creation through delivery, we want to believe him. When Apple released this lovechild spawned by Final Cut Express and iMovie, they kicked that previous statement to the curb. They let a lot of their fans and users down with this release. Apple is one of the most amazing companies in existence, they have an unusual ability to release back-to-back successful products and resources at the wazoo. They have had 3 years since the last FCP update to work on this. Apple created the iPhone and iOS from their first inception in 2005 to a release only 26 months later. They could have built anything... Just saying.

Anyway, sorry, I'm done.

I sincerely hope this is a wake up call to Apple to let them know that there is a Pro market that still exists. No matter how hard they're trying to be a phone company.

Surely not editing Red footage or sending to a colorist or doing all the other things I and many others do here.

You are correct sir. But my point wasn't about Red footie and sending files around, it was about having a functional piece of software, and being able to make money with it.

LOL at the AdobePremiere twitter feed today. Reminding people about how it can load FCP6/7 projects, can do multi-cam editing, EDL's, XML, etc.. Well played on their part. :)

The criticism here is all valid, but I think we are forgetting two important things:

1. If you were a user before FCPX then you still have a solid, working editor in your prior version. FCPX and previous releases can co-exist on the same system so backward compatibility is a non-issue, as is moving forward. Migrate to the new software the way you always have; between projects, and only when the new app is proven.

2. Let's not forget that the app costs $300. With Motion and Compressor it is $400. If we were asked to pay $1000, 10k or 15k as in the past I could understand the vitriol, but right now I see nothing to cry about save for one caveat. D/C'd support for FCP 7 and earlier? That is a bit pre-mature and definitely cause to spur the forward planning users to look elsewhere.

Their track record with apps for our industry does not inspire confidence so to a degree I understand the tendency to panic. I just don't share the sentiment yet. I still expect great things from Apple.

I just tried writing a 5 star review, refreshed the page and it was gone. So sad.

ummm. huh?
Even in you really like the new editing paradyme, how can you possibly rate it as having no flaws?

Oh, just saw your reply to Jeff.

Update:

Although Automatic Duck for FCP X is advertised for audio only, it seems to supports AAF export with video tracks referenced too...

http://www.automaticduck.com/user_guides/PEFCP5UserGuide/SettingsX.html

So you can go from FCP X to Avid. Timeline only and you lose your bins - but that's OK because FCP X doesn't seem to be keen on multiple sequences anyway :)

Then from Avid to Premiere or FCP 7 if you want!

So the current cost to get a version of FCP X that can export an .xml file is $2589 (FCPX for 299 plus AutoDuck for 495 plus FCP 7 for 800 plus Avid for 995).

:P

So now at least I can put my money where my mouth is and try editing my short film in FCP X - and I can at least take the sequence to Avid or Premiere if things get pear-shaped.

But man, I am going to miss my 3-monitor edit config. Hmm... do I really want to do this? In the end, I think the answer is yes - the only way to really see if the new tools work is to try to edit something at least semi-substantial with it.

The reviews are back. The story of a "cover-up" - whether true or not - had spread around the net pretty quickly. Anyway, the written reviews are back. Most are negative.

Somebody, somewhere said something like, "All I really wanted was a 64-bit FCP7." I couldn't have put it better.

Amazing. What a trainwreck.

Really?

It's one thing for someone to 100% blow the launch of FCPX by simply failing to say .... "3rd party application integration in development".

It's another thing to block negative reviews in the app store.

You're staff should be above that.

PS - Looking forward to python and XML capabilities .... and a new marketing team.

Don't know what is going on, but this really is turning into a bit of a debacle, albeit temporary perhaps, but seriously if CNN is getting in on the coverage this is really bad PR for Apple. Again, I must state that I'm willing to give Apple the benefit of the doubt when it comes to making the necessary improvements down the road, but their lack of communication may be really backfiring here. Pulling reviews only further leaves a bad taste in people's mouth. Apple, make a statement and clear this up. If I was in charge of Pro Apps, I would be going on the offensive right now, calming fears, providing as much of a roadmap as execs would allow. I've been one of the more optimistic voices on here today, and even I made a switch based on the uncertainty of the next few months.

I think it will be way more than a few months to get this train back on the right track.

I tried to read the reviews and they were there, then gone when I went to page 2, missing when I went back to page 1, there again when I sorted by most useful, then gone again, rinse/repeat.

I suspect a glitch in the cloud. Or maybe a disturbance in the force.
