  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

FINAL CUT PRO X now supports native R3D

...but I discovered the 'position' tool which allows you to move things around as it were FCP7 (instead of the magnetics of the new timeline).

Not picking on you personally, Ben, but I think this kind of thing has been one of the main problems since FCPX was introduced. People didn't take time to learn the nuances and so there was a lot of claims and complaints about all the things it "couldn't do." Trouble is, it COULD do these things if you only took the time to learn how! Thankfully, with Apple finally getting around to doing the R3D thing, maybe folks will put in the effort to learn the application. The Ripple training is a pretty good way to start.

When the 10.8.2 fix arrives my whole workflow will change to FCPX. Its the future. Apple was listening, Red is on board. My plugina all work wonderfuly. Just a quick Resolve fix On the import and I can finally feel safe about where to invest in the next years in NLE's. Good job apple. I was a sceptic but you've proven you're here for the long haul. Next, the new Macpro. Cannot wait!

This is insanely cool. I love that you are able to adjust all of those RAW parameters from right within FCPX. I may actually make the move up from 7 now.

It doesn't.

Snow Leopard is the minimum requirement.

Well there are multiple people here trying to upgrade to 10.0.6 on OS X 10.8.1 and we're getting an error that 10.8.2 is required. And my computer cannot run an older OS than Lion 10.7.4 (I tried to install Snow Leopard on an external drive to run an old app I needed and the installer said my hardware (Retina MBP) was not compatible). Apple has done something with the updater for FCPX that makes it not upgrade if you're running a Mountain Lion version older than 10.8.2. So we need the Rocket/10.8.2 issue fixed asap. It's already causing multiple apps not being allowed to be updated because we can't upgrade the OS and keep our Rockets functional.

I'm surprised Apple and Red pushed this update without getting the fix out for the Rocket since it looks like Apple and Red were working together on the R3D implementation in FCPX. Even the Apple website says Rocket support, yet the Rocket won't work on 10.8.2, which is the version of Mountain Lion you need to run FCPX 10.0.6.

FCPX 10.0.6 requirements : OSX 10.6.8 or 10.7.5 or 10.8.2, don't forget to install the RED APPLE WORKFLOW INSTALLER V2.0 from https://www.red.com/downloads

for easy playback : set in FCPX , menu Finalcutpro/preferences - tab Playback , Playback Quality on Better Performance.
After importing a lot of r3d files, give it a few seconds/minutes to read and make the audio-waveforms.
also in menu Finalcutpro/preferences - tab Import, de-select Copy files to Final Cut Events folder !
in fact, best to de-select all in this tab. You can alway later do the analysing and/or calculating of proxy-optimized media when really necessary. RED RAW files are still big files with a lot of info...

also it is necessary to get some training and/reading on how to use FCPX : its different !

Thanks Scott, Ill have another look tonight, one thing thats happening is my Laptop is screaming for AIR ! ive never heard the FAN come on so loud for so long ! Maxing out my RAM and GPU... I think she's going to blow !

Mark, you maybe know this already, but I'll chime in anyways. It could be you have micro-dust buildup on the thin copper fins in the heatsink in your macbook, preventing the heat to escape. I find this from time to time on my own intensely used macbook and laptop (and with friends too). Find a source of clean pressurized air, do not use a std compressor as it gives moist with the air, open your macbook up, and blow into the fan outwards. I sometimes blow the opposite direction also, AFTER blowing the main bulk of the dust outwards first. Usually there comes a puff of dust. Sometimes there has built up a dustbunny that needs more attention. The fan will spin at insane speed, so there is always a risk that it could be damaged, you have to evaluate that for yourself. After this procedure your computer will probably be nice and quiet again.

Instead of you fearing that your macbook is going to blow, you can confidently say that "I blew it" ;)

PS. THX for all the inspiration you have share on the board here over time. Much appreciated

Hi Thommes,

The laptop Im testing on is a new Retina, Rammed up to the max and SSD... Is only 4 weeks old.
It's only when I run the R3D's in RSX, FCPX and Prem pro that it MAX's out the fan and GPU.. nothing else causes such violent fan usage.

In short... I think RED R3D's in laptop post ( like i do) is just to hard.
Hence why I will stay in RED LOG FILM - PRO RES land until FCP or Prem become smoother and faster to use. Jerky scrubbing and long render times compromise creativity...

Thanks for your input though :)

Mark, why not go mobile rocket? Yes, not that "Mobile" if you consider power source, but should perform way better! (Haven't tried due to the 10.8.2 issue)

Question (can RED Answer?):

If you let FCP X make Proxies in the background, but switch to original or optimized media before output...
Will your color corrections that you made IN FCP X (color board) be done on the RAW?
So, if you do multiple adjustments in the Color Board with secondaries, are you working on the RAW?

this is a great example using FCPX and Red files. My friend Mario Feil sent me this:
he used a macbook retina, 16gb ram. crazy!

If I understand it properly, setting the playback preference to "Better Performance" yields 1/4 debayer playback. On my system that plays back fine but "Better Quality" (aka 1/2 debayer) is choppy. That is consistent with the performance I get from Red Cine X. Your milage may vary... I'm not looking at 5k either.

wow...first the SCARLET deal of a lifetime and now FCPX R3D support?

it's been an AWESOME week...I must have died and gone to Heaven!

I reposted this question here:

Is there a better thread for technical comments, questions and observations? Here's s couple questions:
1. Do the adjustments made in RCX come over to FCPX when exported as a R3D Trim? Metadata changed in RCX does not seems to have change when viewed in FCPX
2. The color adjustments in FCPX are crude. What do you recommend for a timeline plug-in style (no roundtrip) quick first light color grade tool?
3. MB Looks seems to crash FCPX - anyone else experiencing the "LS3RenderCPU" crash message?
