  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

FINAL CUT PRO X now supports native R3D

another test... capture a image with some small text. on your HD monitor, see that you just can not read the text, only when you zoom 1:1 on the camera you can.... move the RAW file to FCPX, in a HD timeline/display, the text is not readable, but then with the FCPX transform tool, scale the image 200%, you can even add keyframes and/or stabilisation... and then on your HD timeline with zoomed-in RAW image... text becomes again readable !!!...
If you would have made a HD ProRes 444 for editing, you can NOT zoom in that much and gain back the details that are buried in the RAW 4K or 5K files !!.. - now i understand why RED calls the Meizler ProResrecording proxy ;-)
In the past you would need to do this in Resolve, now without any effort at all in FCPX with the RED plugin...
i will try to post a movie with my testimage which show this feature.

And now that we have R3D support, we can all sit around and wait with excited anticipation for Logic Pro X for better sound integration with FCP-X.

Dont forget the Mac Pro :)
Too soon?

This is pretty awesome.

BUT- the fact that FCPX doesn't work on non-SAN network volumes is a real bummer for studios. Does anyone have a contact at Apple for the FCPX team? We'd love to chat with someone there about their thoughts on multi-seat editing facilities.

EDIT: probably a big ask, as I know everyone's got feedback for FCPX. Worth trying though.

This is serious. I have now been editing with CS5.5 (using the FCP7 keyboard option) and tried CS6 and somehow didn't quite feel comfortably using Speedgrade. Does this mean I can now use Color integrated in the new FCPX? Have access to all the export tools and edit native R3D??? And all for £199.00???

Must be some kind of a dream or something...

My slight reservations or shall I say questions are:

1. Which of the two programs (FCPX and CS6) tolerates feature length narrative with multi-cam better?
2. Which has better color grading tools?
3. Which is more responsive to updating RCX grading settings/color correction to the project files?
4. Which offers better speed versus playback quality of R3D files (Premiere does 1/4 resolution without a rocket)?

Can anyone answer these? Thanks

1. can't say
2. you can use davinci, redcine or the fcpx plug in on the raw files, the corrections are written in the side cars...everything remains raw until you export
3.trying to find out right now....seems to be seamless....but i have had to restart fcpx to see the results (when redcine and fcpx are open at the same time)
4.i don't have a rocket and this is not in any way scientific but i am not working with proxies (imac27 3.4, 32gb ram, 512 ssd, pegasus r12) and things are flying....
hope this helps...

If you can adapt to the platform, multicam in FCP X is pretty much unmatched IMHO. Here's the simplest introduction from the FCP page (watch the multicam editing video), bottom right http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/ You can see it's an entirely different architecture when it comes to multi cam, but it's very efficient. CS6 is great for technician editing, but with creative long form you'll see a lot of virtue in FCP X advancements.

FCP X has a 10 year road map so don't sleep on it. A lot of people are scared to adapt to a whole new mindset when it comes to feature length cutting. Learn and experiment with everything and use them all to sell your talent.

It's not outlined anywhere that I've seen, but I gather if you do the following in final cut pro x:

- Import r3d files without transcoding (uncheck 'optimize' media), and leave the r3d files where they are (don't move them to the event folder).
- Set fcpx "playback performance" (under preferences) to "Better Performance". this will debayer the r3d files at 1/4 quality (~1080p?)

Playback on my machine is totally fine at 24fps. Adjusting the r3d files via Cine-X is immediately reflected in fcpx once the .rmd files are written.

If you transcode to prores for editing, fcpx has to re-transcode whenever the .rmd files are altered, as I understand it.

Presumably you can export a project via xml and then grade only the final lock's included clips in Cine-X and just write out new .rmd files and then you can render to final media from fcpx, all without transcoding or exporting or any of that.

Is that how it's supposed to work? Would this scale up to a large timeline? I've done the above steps with a small number of short r3d files, and it seems to work flawlessly and fast. On the other hand, I'm new to this raw world... Is there another approach that would be better?

I personally love Magic Bullet Looks Suite for color correction, which will plug in for both, though you may check user feedback for peoples happiness on FCPX with it, I just use it on PP.

I saw the future and, after my whole career and education on FCP, I jumped to PC and PP about 4 months before the natorious FCPX rollout. I have had a great great time since then. Even on a basic system PP is great and the integration with AE and PS is super for time saving. I am guessing you are on Mac, so I won't go into Mercury Playback Engine... But I now have a MBP retina, the best one they make, and PP runs like a dream, even without MPE really working yet. But my home PC, which cost HALF of what my MBP cost, and that was 2 years ago, is still faster.

I really really like PP. Adobe is listening, engaging, and helping. And most importantly, it doesn't take a YEAR to add native support for Red footage.

And before people think I am saying this cause I own PP, I have FCPX also. The company I am with put it on the MBP for me. So as a good steward of the craft, I will be playing around later this week now that FCPX is less broken. :-)

( and now before people think I am being melodramatic by calling FCPX broken... it broke my heart first :-P )

Adobe does appear to be fully engaged and quite responsive, which is a joy. In the interest of perspective I will just point out that Red One has been around for five years now and Adobe just added native support in the last six months. They didn't wait a YEAR to add native support, it took 4 1/2. I appreciate your passion for the subject but if we could keep the rhetoric down a bit it could be useful.

All my tests avoid copying to Event folder.
This is reversed from optimal workflow but Id rather have my R3Ds untouched and playing from the fastest possible drive (all R3Ds are copied to RAID).
Runs pretty smooth in FCPX for me.

This statement is incorrect. The first RED plugin for Premiere Pro appeared during the CS4 time frame. I demoed it with Ted from RED and Lucas from Assimilate at IBC in 2008. It's now been through many iterations from those early days.

Thanks for the correction and please pardon my ignorance. I was not fortunate enough to be working with Red material then, but I was following the company. I wonder how I missed this. Did it take a while before it was widely adopted, or was it just that the news simply hadn't reached under my rock? :-)

It was a big rock.

Anyone worried to work on a daily base with one of the original copy of your rushes?

Could be ok for fast turn around job but it's a no go for long form. Would you make another copy of your R3D? Hard drive Space is Stills too expensive to skip the transcode step.
IMHO.

Pat

Ps but it's stills great to have the option...

We always make triplicates for our workflow.
Of course that's a different beast in Hollywood and beyond.

I am insanely excited about this. Even without a Red Rocket on a quad-core Mac Pro my RED footage was playing flawlessly in the Event Browser.

I did notice that at least for me, when I put a full 4K clip into a new project it started closing FCPX and giving me an error message. Now whenever I open my project files it kicks me out of FCPX. I think what I'll have to do is reinstall FCPX because I had to do that for a previous build before. I'll have to wait though because I'm still editing an HDSLR project on it.

I have to say though I love FCPX for long form editing. I mostly deal with shorts but I remember having to edit an hour long documentary on FCP6 and it was a nightmare. The magnetic timeline is a godsend.

Just update to 10.0.6, and test with R3D...and...
