Hi Guys,

Today we have released a version of FilmConvert Film Stock Emulation as an OFX plugin.

EDIT:

We do not support OFX.

Well, ok - that's a bit embarrassing. I was told that Avid did support OFX in some capacity. I was hoping someone could try out our Vegas plugin and let us know if it worked. Turns out this is not likely if no version of Avid supports OFX!

EDIT 2:

Hopefully it wasn't an Avid person that told you that... ;) But perhaps it was a DS user. According to this:
http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/compatibility/en384691?popup=true&NewLang=en&DocType=1083

Avid DS supports the Foundry's OFX host. So when saying Avid, you just need to be a bit more specific. :)
It would be great if Avid Media Composer and Symphony products supported other FX host in addition to AVX. Perhaps someone will make an OFX to AVX gasket...

Michael

Hmm. So - actually OFX is supported on Avid DS.

Any DS, Scratch or Nuke users who want to give it a go and let me know if it works, would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

I don't see a specific installer for MC - should there be one?

Michael

Hey Nigel!

Will this work on 6.0 or just 6.5 +?

Hi Brandon,

There are a Myriad of platforms, we haven't had a chance to test all combinations - this plugin was made specifically for Vegas, but as an OFX plugin it should work in other OFX supported software.

I should note that this particular plugin is Windows only.

I think Avid DS does, but it would be news to me that MC does.

Hi,
I also didnt see any download option for OFX.....Further will the trial work with Assimilate Scratch?
Thanks

Marianna on the boards... welcome! The only other Avid person I have seen since my time. :)

FROM YOUR LIPS TO AVID'S EARS. AVID HAS A NEW BOSS AND HOPEFULLY UNDER HIS REIGN THOSE GUYS CAN LOSE THEIR ANCIENT CODE-LADEN SOFTWARE AND START FRESH.

It will be interesting to see what happens. I can't imagine changes will be that fast or drastic. Big changes would be selling off parts of the company, going private, etc. It's not like this guy is completely new. He's been on the Avid board since Gary took the reigns as CEO, so to some extent, he has watched what has been going on and is more of a hand-off from what I can read, than a full on replacement. But you never know. Only time will tell what the strategy is for the company and the prioritization of products and features for the markets they serve and prioritization of those as well.

ProTools and audio based product-pushing seems to have left the NLE business in a state of second class status at AVID.

I will be curious to see the ratio of NLE to Protools at their NAB booth this year.

Yes, AVID has released some interesting updates in the last year for MC and Symphony, but they are weighted down in endless layers of code dating back decades to their Nubus systems.

(and dont even START me on DS!)

There can really never be serious competition with other, more modern and versatile NLEs without a true re-think and refresh.

Putting a new dress on an old lady...doesnt make the old lady younger... it just puts a new dress on an old lady.

Sorry. FilmConvert for hijacking this thread. Love you guys.

Hmmmm...I work in an 20 edit facility and Avid runs circles around every other editing solution, so I guess that ancient code is doing allright!

That being said...being able to cut 4K natively would be great.

That being said...being able to cut 4K natively would be great.

I've been editing on AVID since college and have owned (and still own) premium AVID-built systems, so I am a fan of the software....

BUT, speed is not the only thing we look for in an NLE now, Nick.

...and YES, many facilities use AVID, but just as many run Final Cut and now Premiere on hardware-intensive systems that bring speed to the myriad modern features that editors want now to finish projects with fewer round-trips to other software.

I think that AVID editing continues because it is comfortable to a generation of editors who learned on it
and are fluent in it.

Remember though, that there is an entire generation after them, who feel the same way about Final Cut and a new generation today who are very happy with and incredibly agile in CS6 Premiere.

4k?

Hell, matching the feature set of Premiere would be nice... 2K and the use of LUTS, plug-ins and perhaps even a more modern approach to CC!!!!

Nothing really compares to MC in a lot of areas, I edit all my feature work on Media Composer for a variety of reasons, from metadata management, or dailies organization, to ScriptSync, etc. Also, no other NLE is up to what MC can do in a shared storage environment with simple project and bin sharing (I don't use Interplay). But much of the work of late is somewhat catch-up and what has been implemented feels like it needs to be competed to work for all folks in all scenarios (The Find feature for example). I agree that UI changes were OK, but in some cases caused more limitations, and in others could have taken advantage of adding functionality and not just icon or color change. It seems to be straddled between incomplete offline or incomplete online depending on the program type you are creating. For corporate and cable type programming, I think it has "most" of what is needed for finishing - but creative finishing, VFX are best left to a conform box like smoke. Color correction is still 2001. Why Media Composer still doesn't have secondary color correction is a head scratcher. The baselight plug-in can be a great solution for creative control, but AVX plug-ins don't benefit from the relational color correction feature in Symphony. Which has nothing to do with color correction, as it is about metadata relationship regardless of the "effect" and in my opinion should become standard for AVX or AudioSuite or any plug-in that is being applied to an element or span in the timeline. That is a strategy I call becoming a platform solution and not just a single node solution in the creative process.

I think there is a difference between 4K editing, and 4K mastering - they don't have to be the same. In some scenarios a 4K finish might be preferred, but I suspect 4K image access is what people want (to start). 4K native editing will tax the performance, thus the fluidity of the edit which is why most people still transcode - multicam, AAF, and QUickTime export are still weaknesses of AMA in my opinion. I also believe there is plenty of innovation to be done in how creative editors approach their material for program creation. As I said previously, it's all about prioritization - be it market, solution, product or feature and how many resources there are to make that happen. NAB will be telling - not only form a product perspective, but how Avid tells its own story to the different market segments at this yet another juncture in its history.

This is Avid's blessing and curse at the same time. And makes good design challenging at best when trying to please multiple approaches to editing for different "generations". I think it can be done - SmartTool was certainly an attempt at engaging "new" users who come from NLE's that have that approach, and is a love/hate thing for many users. Each approach has its advantages and disadvantages and I believe it is based on what is being edited at the moment. I use one style when timing out a heavy dialog based scene, and another if it is a montage type scene behind a title sequence for example. The art is the tool that engages seamlessly when your editing based on the stye needed at the moment. That is good design and in my opinion where SmartTool had the opportunity to be that, but in the end was more of a "this is what other NLE's do" approach.

These opinions are my own. :)
