  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

FilmConvert - Film Stock Emulation for Red Cameras

No I didn't use xml. It works with r3d but quicktime files (prores HQ) don't show in the viewer in the second tab, the logo filmconvert remains and there's no image. I will send an email. Thanks. Despite this bug that I think it will be fixed soon, your software is great, very filmic look.

played with the demo today, loved it, bought it :)

I also think fitting in the workflow it the toughest point... Things i missed in the demo are:

- setting i/o point
- when exporting a XML based sequence it renders the whole clip with a message this frame was not rendered, would be easier if it would just render the i/o from the XML
- More R3D metadata adjustments would be nice, now you can only change the exposure and color temperature. But would be nice to also set ISO instead of exposure, and have a tap that is utizilies the metadata as shot instead of raw, is that possibe?
- Possibility to give looks a name?

further, compliments, really like what it does with the footage, takes a bit of the digital feel off it :)

- setting i/o point
This will be in the next release, in a few weeks :)

We did this so that re-connecting the rendered footage would be easy. For instance, if you had 3 cuts from one shot, and made 3 different output files, what would you name them? You'd also be relying on the timecode to reconnect. We could add the other way as an option, but can you let me know what circumstances this would be desirable?

Possible yes, I would imagine that exposure and ISO are interchangeable in terms of how they work, but having it change to specific ISO stop values might be nice. I don't see this getting to the top of the priority list however!

- Possibility to give looks a name?

This is on our list. Not sure how high up it is though... :)

On my system Final cut pro X 10.0.6 repeatedly crashes with the latest plugin version of filmconvert, 10.0.5 is fine.

Feels like I see Google Ads for this software everywhere I go online... Definitely will give it a try soon :)

Can we use it with Resolve? Exporting Luts from filmconvert or directly in resolve?

Hello Luca, could you throw us an email to support@filmconvert.com with what you were using at the time (any special media type, etc)?

We'd naturally love to figure out why it might be causing you trouble.

Sadly, at the moment it doesn't work within Resolve, as they don't have a plugin architecture that we can use.

What we usually do, is either a pre-pass on our footage before going to resolve, or a post pass using the default sensor mode.

Where can we get the link to download the Dec/12 versions? The website still has the Nov/12 versions as the downloadable versions.

Does the RED profiles take into account what gamma and colour settings the footage was originally shot in?

Apologies for the confusion:
The download links with the late November dates are the updates that Nigel was noting.
They include all the newest goodies and updates.
Feel free to grab em and take em for a whirl!
Thanks and Enjoy!

Update December 2012
Now available with the following camera profiles:
  • Red cameras
  • Canon DSLRs +5 profiles
  • GH2 +7 profiles
Will it read GH2 .MTS files natively or does it have to be a quicktime or DPX file?

Do you have recommended settings in GH2? I often shoot with Smooth look setting with everything dialed down a bit.

If you are going to use it as a plugin, I believe as long as your NLE supports the codec, it's native. I just tried it using RED footage in FCPX.

The stand-alone only processes R3D and quicktime at this stage. Plugins will process anything the host software can handle.

Hello Steve,
Indeed, we found that the Smooth look style gives the nicest response, so although we have all the profiles available for you, that's definitely the one we'd recommend.
The profile we shot was with neutral saturation, etc, but that shouldn't affect the general accuracy of your conversion too much.

Hello Bob,
As our starting point, we use the RedColor2 / RedGamma setting, so if you turn off our conversion entirely within the standalone, this is what you'll get. We initially considered allowing the full metadata set through, but this would require us to do 2 separate Red extractions for each frame, which would get expensive quite quickly.

We do, however, make sure to keep ISO and Colour temperature information intact, so that the native neutral balance is maintained.

So FilmConvert automatically overrides whatever gamma and color space is in the metadata and sets it to RC2/RG? Would the results not be better if footage was shot/lit using RC2/RG?

Hi Lance,

Why not RedColor3?

When will FilmConvert standalone allow control surfaces like the tangent elemet to control lift/gamma/gain and color wheels?

I know Da Vinci simply mapped And hacked a wave panel themselves a few years ago...then At NAB the tangent guys walked over and said "you should've just called us!"

They want to make your software compatible with their panels...all you gotta do is ask!
