  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

FilmConvert - Film Stock Emulation for Red Cameras

Great ideas Jason! What exactly is available in CS6 for the Windows PC power users here on Red?

Do you have a link for us yet?

Will this product work (for PC) across R3D 4K, 5K and 6K?

Are there any RED cameras (or frame rates) that it won't work for?

Is there any (minor) difference at all about procedures we should expect to follow when using Scarlet vs. Epic with this product?

Hey Mark,
Thanks for the questions - so here's hopefully a few useful answers:

For CS6 on Windows, the full FilmConvert plugin is available for both After Effects, and Premiere. In addition, we're working on an OFX compatible plugin that is specifically compatible with Sony Vegas at the moment, but which we're hoping to confirm for Scratch and Avid Composer as well in the next little bit.

Happily, the plugins work for all sizes of R3D source that you want to throw at them - also quite happily, they should work for any frame rate or Red camera that you want to throw at them too.

Fee free to grab the windows plugin from our downloads page and give it a whirl:

Any plans to support Nuke?

Any plans to Windows Stand-alone version?
Good question +1; Is the RED CINE X Windows version (so useful for best lights!) coming up next?

I think even more for Scarlet owners, as this camera has been so maligned for 4K delivery, your product is as exciting as anything we've heard about here! I plan to try a down load TODAY!

Just played with the standalone version for the first time. I think I'm in love! but, no 4k output? Is the Pr plugin able to export to 4k?

The standalone should in fact be able to output 4K, but only in single frame mode (i.e., as a collection of tiffs or dpx) - quicktime seemed to have some problems with anything much higher than HD res. Happily though, we're updating the QT support to some newer libs, so this limitation may go away soon... with a little luck.

Do the plug in versions have all of the settings/options that the stand alone version has?

Is there a way to simulate an old 1900 vintage film camera (at 4K) with this software or is there a better plugin for that ? Any ideas ?

Thanks guys,

Kristin

Hi guys. Just wondering, what color science you use on Red profile? Is it Red color 3?

Hi Daniel, the standalone has a 3 way color corrector and levels, which are not included in the plugins (as most platforms have their own).

However, we've been asked to include our ones as people like them, so we're adding them to the plugins where possible.

We are thinking about adding noise and age features to FilmConvert, but it isn't on the short term list.

Nigel,

You know that we are early adopters of this tool, and I see it a great tool that can be integrated into some of our pipeline options. Is there any plan to integrate the support of control panels (such as the Element, MC Color, etc.)?

Thanks in advance for your answer!

Hi Luis,

We have a number of features planned for higher end grading, I'd have to say that control panel support would be a long way off unfortunately.

Are there any controls within the plugin?
Lets say I feel the FilmConvert made my image a tad too contrasty. Could I pull back on the contrast level?

The latest version of the standalone allows you to apply the film color and saturation, and you have a separate slider controlling the brightness - so, yes!
