  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

FilmConvert - Film Stock Emulation for Red Cameras

Nigel,

I assume there's no reason one could run this software at the end of the post-chain, after grading? Or is the idea that the color/contrast will change so much you'd want to grade afterwards? In that case it might be nice if there was a 'grain only' version as to maintain previously established contrast/color.. BTW, without seeing it on a large screen, the samples are very impressive, they remind me of the look we were getting with the Nucoda Film Master grain profiles..

Hi Sean,

That's a great idea. You can add currently add grain without any color transformations by reducing the color slider to zero. Currently you can't load in anything but R3D files, however the next release will support MOV and other cameras. You will be able to add grain to a finished project at that point.

Is it possible to have your trail video as a download in pro res or similar codec that doesn't have the compression and banding issues.

+1 for the uncompressed trailer. I've watched it several times already, shown it to friends, colleagues and a patient girlfriend. I'm amazed, but damn that vimeo banding.

If we buy the $500 software, are we eligible for a free upgrade to the next version, or to a future plug-in version? When do you expect to raise the price?

Thanks for spending so much time on such an excellent idea!

Hi Ryan,

The next version will be a free upgrade. We won't have a paid upgrade until a major version change say from 1.0 to 2.0. This will be a long time form now.

Plug-ins will be included in your purchase, you won't have to pay anything more for them - unless the plugins were version 2.0 and your original purchase was version 1.0.

Thanks Nigel,

It would be a very nice feature to have in the future.

Now that everything is HD monitoring on set the agency wants to know exactly what the image is going to look like for the final result. (Mainly because we are getting younger and younger agency and clients who have never had to look at a film video assist).

If you want to test any software, let me know... I am working mainly in Queenstown, Wellington and Auckland.

Cheers,

Any update on the progress and imminent add-on features?

Hope you guys are marching slowly but surely.

Thanks!
George

Hello George!
Indeed, the codeMonkeys here at RubberMonkey (which happily includes myself) are putting the polish on a few interesting new features that should be out in the next few weeks - in partciular, we've finally sorted out a nice, and super spiffy multi-threaded rocket based extract system. We're also extending the colour science to include profiles for the Canon 5D & 7D, as well as a full suite of plugins for folks with after effects so that you can integrate the simulation into a wider range of production pipelines.

So keep watching this channel, as we are in fact, just about to send some interesting stuff out to the world.

Cheers!

We're actually in the process of trying to gauge interest in where we should apply our efforts as soon as we finish the current round of development, and haven't made any hard and fast decisions as of yet.

So please feel free to recommend what platforms and plugins you'd like to see - we'll put you down as +1 for scratch indeed.

Thanks!

Ah, indeed, Resolve - this is one we'd definitely be interested in supporting - at the moment though, it appears to be the most difficult nut to crack, but for non-technical reasons.

Happily though, I believe that we actually have a plan in place to set our businessMonkeys on the problem at some point, and with any luck, something cool will pop out the other end.

Good stuff Lance.

So much of my work is now going through Resolve, and some is even finishing in Nuke.

Scarlet is here by the way - sing out if you have anything you want tested. Lot's of projects in the pipeline with various workflows in place.

I'd love to give this a try but the application keeps crashing every time i click on step 2 for film settings :/

btw is Nathan Meister still working with you rubbermonkey guys ? I worked on a feature with him a couple of years back in Queensland. If so please send my regards :)
