I think different.
To me the proxy module should not need to be on the camera. I would much rather have a small box, kind of like a two slotted magreader or such with built in rocket.
Just a simple thing to have in your DIT station or gear case. Preferably it should be possible to run with volts or Vlock or normal AC power. Just a simple docking station.

I like the way you think... ;o)
Wehen it comes to such a product - we are thinking along the same lines.
But that does not have to be different per say. Just two separate products.

I'm never comfortable with off-camera recording of any type - masters or proxies. There's just too much to go wrong. Compressed recording needs to be build in to the body.

That is what this PROXY MODULE is all about. But you can not compress in real-time high-speed takes. You will require a power-hungry dedicated ASIC just for that and it could end up costing as much as the camera brain to begin with. What I am proposing is an inexpensive (no HW modification required) solution. Ultimately you will have the choice to decide whether you want to use it or not. Nobody will force you either way...

Well no, the Red proxy module is still reliant on an SDI feed for recording, so I'd still consider that an external recorder, subject to the same risks as any cable-attached recording device.

Using an already down-scalled HD feed is a must, or you are looking at 5x price increase (ala the Meizler) as you will need a dedicated ASIC for that...
I would understand your concern if the cable was HDMi, but SDI is as secure of a cable connection as it gets...
The point is that you control the module from within the camera UI and you also power it from the back-pins as well. No need for another power solution / source...
