For what it is worth, I just downloaded the latest version of FCPX 10.3 and it now imports and plays RED 8K Helium files from my Epic-W. I was able to do this on my stinking old early 2011 MacBook Pro!!!

yeah I just posted in another thread, it super fast also

Steve

Does it FCPX 10.3 allow you to choose the "performance playback" resolution? I'd love to be able to select 1/4, 1/8, etc... with a full res "paused" resolution.

its less complicated than that, you can choose from original/optimized better playback, original/optimized better qualilty, proxy

I just transcode to proxy right in fcpx and choose proxy, when I am done editing I choose better playback for grading and fine tweaks better quality. Literally takes 2 seconds in the drop down, just like RCX

Steve

thanks for the info !!!

Sitting here working on a project in FCPX (10.2.3) and the one thing bugging me about the proxy workflow within FCPX is that it forces you to delete the proxies if you want to go back and tweak the R3D RAW settings. I can't find a good reason for why they are doing that. Obviously anything you tweak won't be reflected in the baked in proxy file, in which case if you need the new look in the proxy then you would re-transcode. But sometimes I want to play with color in RAW and then go back to editing with proxies and don't need to see the color updated at that point. So, this is a bit of a drag. Have they fixed that in 10.3?

Also, finding that Izotope plugin Rack crashes FCPX quite a bit and also having some crashes related to Color Finale Pro.

But, I have grown to really like a lot of things about FCPX, and eventually will update the big thread I had going.

yes you do need to re transcode, which is a pain, I removed all my izo plugs long ago, I forget why

Is there a new RED workflow installer that needs to be installed? Or the old one works?

(I see that the last date on the RED site is 10/11/16 - which I definitely don't have yet.)

Also - my App Store app says I have 7 apps needing to be updated but they aren't showing up. Anyone else having this issue?)

Thanks.

As I'm just learning to edit my own stuff, I'm genuinely curious as to the main pro and cons of FCP vs Premiere vs Resolve (if it can be considered a contender). I own both and Resolve is free.

Do you have 3 bullet points of what you REALLY like about FCPX Steve?

I know your not asking me but here is what I like

1-Easy proxy work flow
2-visual editing, it is very intuitive, coming from a protools audio background it was seamless, much easier than old versions
3-multicam editing-I love the way the multicam editing works, I personally have a hard time wrapping my head around premier, resolve not as much

I just listed a workflow in other thread, but just in case:

1. In a lot of ways, it's built for speed. Imports most files (no DNG support however) and you can transcode to optimized or proxy in background.

2. Magnetic timeline can be great a lot of the time. You just have to know when to not use it.

3. Fast exports

4. Good RED R3D support

5. Tons of plugins available (which could also be considered a negative because many believe that some of them should already be native to FCPX)

6. If you are a Mac person with a relatively new system FCPX is optimized for that hardware.

7. Autosync works pretty well and the multicam approach they take is kind of killer. Once you get in and use it I'd be curious what you think. I use it even when just synching an audio track to a video track. There are some unique benefits to doing so.

I know you're not asking me either, but... :-)

I haven't looked at Premiere for a very long time - coming from FCP7 - but what I think is under-appreciated is the overall workflow support built into FCPX. The catchword "metadata" is what is thrown around but that is so boring it misses the point.

I think Michael Cioni sums it up really well in this video related to the work they did on Whiskey Tango Foxtrot: https://vimeo.com/161710321

Thanks for the input guys. And I do appreciate your input Terry. You and I came on Reduser about the same time and I've always appreciated your no-nonsense approach. I trusted my decision to get the Helix because I knew you liked it.

It's very kind of you to say, Andy. It means a lot to me. I know I probably get a mixed response here on RU because of my "no nonsense approach" - :001_unsure: - but I truly hope not to ruffle too many feathers.

Wow, the FCPX update is out already!
Anyone know if ColorFinale still works with it?

Quick question: Does one need to download and install the RED APPLE WORKFLOW INSTALLER V11 from Red's website before using Red footage on FCPX?

Separately, I downloaded the Red Photoshop plugin but still can't open an R3D frame in Photoshop? Anyone know the secret or what is the purpose of that plugin?

Thanks.

it is what allows you to modify red raw settings in fcpx I think

My updates didn't appear either, but if you go to the purchased page or whatever it is that lists the apps you have downloaded from the app store you can individually select apps and update if they show an update is available.
