  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

FCPX and 8K Helium

I think the speed of the RAID is likely the issue too. Mine plays fine over TB 1. Promise Pegasus R6 set to RAID 5.

Yea, Phil says it needs 260Mb/sec for Helium 8K (http://phfx.com/tools/REDCamAssist/...solution=8K&format=FF&ana=none&fps=24&HDRx=no) so the Raid may indeed be the issue. Testing using the internal SSD played fine. OK, I'm impressed now.

I am getting read speeds from my old Promise Pegasus R6, again set at RAID 5 of about 700 MB/s....again this is over TB 1
 
I just received the new Macbook Pro max available configuration and have tried Epic W files at various frame sizes playing on internal SSD, found that 8k was not smooth (at 10:1 compression), 7 k was pretty good but still not perfect, and 6k even at 9:1 was great. So for 8k need to make proxy media on import. The 8k to 4k prores of course runs smoothly, but the files are broken up in chunks. Interestingly, my old 2013 MacPro trashcan with an external Promise will play the 8k files just fine.

I did not activate Firevault, made sure that the files were imported and not running off the reader, and did not have anything else running at the time, but maybe there is some other factors not considered?

Is there a measurable way of understanding the dynamic performance changes happening under the hood? IE is "better performance" with 6-8K footage a similar effect to 1/4 or 1/2 res? Just trying to correlate between what is "plays back fine" and actually seeing real-time playback that also looks better than 1/4 res while also considering compression of the footage.

I get realtime full-res playback on: 6K (24FPS) + 7:1 and above -- with a 5960X @ 4.5Ghz plus Titan-X Maxwell in Premiere (6950X floats around 5:1 and 6:1).
Any effects or extended timelines require 1/2 res.

Jon - thanks for disclosing specific ratios. Much easier to measure performance when we're apples to apples.
