  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EXTRA RAVEN PACKAGE - WHAT SHOULD IT BE?

I'd like to see this package:

-Raven brain
-4.7 Touch Screen
-Base I/O v-mount (gold mount alternate please)
-(2) 240gb minimags
-Minimag USB3.0 reader
-AC power cable

I like this but with the 7" Touch Screen. I'm a V-Mount guy but there should definitely be a Gold-Mount option.
There would certainly be a huge need for MiniMag Reader included in a 3rd package.

I am a documentary cinematographer, who for the past year really, has been weighing the FS7 and C300 mark II options forthcoming... meanwhile continuing to shoot on my C100. I don't think I am along in this camp, and I am eager to try to build the ideal package when I do make this jump.

You need to seriously consider the realities of doc shooting before you invest. Research how much media, batteries and editing storage you need. And also consider how much low light shooting you do.

I would advice against building a package with multiple Mini-Mags. They can be had as a package anyway like the Mini-Mag 4 pack or 12 pack.

Many Mini-Mags would drive the price significantly higher than current packages thereby lessening the broad appeal.

I was also fixed on XL Volts, but read about some of the issues. I'd like to hear from RED that they stand behind the XL Volt and that it works well with Weapon/Raven.

for me its easy, 240Gb instead of 120GB for a slight price hike..

and I know this might be crazy but they should figure out how to hook up a discount on Fool Control + a mini Mag reader from G-Drive @@

it should be coupled with a BT scarlet mx i think, sell em for like 5k more n mini ssd on both... you can use the parts on both n have s35 now too n 5k! that could end so many threads here! just think of the electricity savings alone?

Here's a potential package:

Road Warrior Kit:

Raven Brain w/Media bay
7" touch screen
Base I/O
AC adapter
4x 240GB mags

For wildlife, docs, live events and other shooting scenarios where you need to be as self sufficient as possible, and lightweight for mobility. I like the 7" as in some situations it will be the only way to check focus and review clips out in the field - the 4.7" is smaller, but the weight difference is marginal and the smaller screen is not as easy to spot subtle issues on - if you have a 17" monitor on set, then you can use that for critical review - but if that's not in the mix... Having almost a TB of media on hand would be my minimum if downloading during the day is not an option due to logistics.

Price - I think i should let RED determine that if this kit has enough interest ;-)

I agree along these lines, a bit of a premium package in the $14-15K region. The two existing packages offer an amazing under 10K setup, so I think if they were to offer an additional package they should look at a premium setup (with a decent package discount).

"Doc" shooter package:

1. Side grip/handle with start/stop
2. 240GB
3. XLR audio jack module

Thanks,
Clint

The new side handle and some XLR inputs would be stellar. I've already put down a deposit on just the brain. i have a feeling none of these packages will fit my needs exactly so I'll probably go a la carte.

I agree, since the first 2 packages are quite similar in price, the 3rd should occupy other territory.

To add to my earlier Road Warrior kit, I totally agree that the mini-mag reader should always be in there. Even if you already have one, a brand new reader with the latest I/O is hardly going to go to waste in most RedUsers world. In fact, I would actually suggest the Road Warrior carry two readers. Not having a back up of the device needed to dump footage is indefensible as professional practice, and the great news is that they are very small and light - so not much downside other that cost up front - and for a high speed media reader with decent heat sinks it's a very reasonable price.

Just imagine you walked onto a job blind where the DP got sick suddenly and you're getting offered the gig. What - sans lenses/MB/FF/rods/etc - do you want to see when you inspect the kit already in the room. I'd like to dub it the Road Warrior, though someone likely has that slogan marked ;-).

ROAD WARRIOR (Don't sue me Mel) RAVEN TACTICAL KIT maybe???

Raven Brain w/Media Bay
7.0" Touch monitor
Base I/O V-Lock expander
AC Adapter
V-mount belt clip to Raven DC in
2x RED Mini-Mag readers w/USB3 cables
2x 240GB Mini-Mags

I want to note that the larger on board monitor does add some cost and size, and a tiny bit of weight (both the 4.7" and 7.0" are quite light) but in situations where an outboard monitor is not at hand, the ability to critically judge footage on the monitor you actually do have - the 7" - you are far more likely to spot things like buzzed focus that could bite you on a bigger screen later.
Anybody who needs tons of media will just have to buy a pack ala carte, putting 4 in there felt like it was pricing too many folks out.

BTW, one of the reasons I'd like to see a package with 240GB mags, instead of 120GB mags, is that users will be more likely to stay at a lower compression ratio since the time available calc will be double in minutes at matching settings. RedCode is brilliant, but it's not magic, it does look better in the 3:1 to 6:1 range, than 7:1 to 10:1, particularly on challenging material. I don't want to make any rash statements about a camera I haven't measured personally. That said, just by math, Raven wouldn't have as much supersampling advantage as one typically employs on Scarlet or Epic just in terms of active photo sites at capture vs delivery raster. In particular, I would expect a UHD/4K finish of Raven footage to be well served by lower compression ratios. Giving away the Bayer penalty - AND - bit starving an entropy codec will not be your friend for a UHD/4K deliverable. For 1080P, Bob's Your Uncle.

IMO: I've always liked carrying at least 4 mags - no matter what you have been told prior to the job. I'm a battle scarred veteran who has seen the abject panic on a clients face when you tell them you are about to run out of media - and when I say client, that could be former client. It's easy CYA and I've come across some tasty scenics rolling back from gigs that I was able to put on one of my personal drives - one of the upsides of being an owner/op - downsides too depressing to mention ;-)

Here is my wish for Raven package or future accessories:

1) Side Handle that can fit redvolts
2) A small light weight module that only has a lemo power plug on it.
3) A small light weight module that only has XLR or XLRmini inputs on it.

To echo most of the statements:

1) Larger Mini-Mag
2) Card Reader
3) Side handle with redvolt capability (for me it's just a backup so I can hot swap a vmount in the middle of shooting...that is possible right? :) )
4) XLR input module (since the Raven has a built in scratch mic, no need for 3.5 jack for me)
5) I'd be in for the 7.0 screen as well...though I can deal with the 4.7". (side question, which one is newer tech?)

Cheers.

There's talk of new modules coming soon, so maybe wait and see what they are before we figure out a third package?

I don't want to vote on a package, only to later see a sexy new I/O module with XLR and some good preamps. :p

I agree and I've said the same thing. I would actually ask Jarred what the latest 'submit date' for a new request would be, and then aim for that. Keep the options open as long as possible.

If I'd make a package today it would probably be:

  • Brain
  • 4.7" Touch
  • 240GB Mini-Mag
  • Base i/o extender
  • XL Volt module
  • XL Volt x2
  • Functional handle (new—assuming no power capabilities)
  • Mini-Mag Station (card reader)

This is my Ready-to-Shot-and-charge out of the box package.

But there are questions open regarding XL Volt's reliability and ability to power the Raven. Also—does the new handle take a RedVolt? I would need answers to this before making a decision.

I'd like a super basic package option for those who have a screen already, or who simply do not wish to purchase a Red touch screen. Something like:

- Raven Brain
- 240gb Mini Mag
- Sidekick

Also, let me clarify one tihng. Jarred offered for us to consider a third package. In my mind, knowing what you know now and what is out there, what other bundle is appealing? Meaning, while we like to hear new product suggestions, this isn't what the request is about. So, don't add modules that don't exist in here, haha. Remember, development time for powered accessories is pretty long...and we already have a big hit list in dev's queue already.

Can DSMC2 have more than four channels of audio (two internal, two on module)? For example, can you theoretically stack three "dual XLR modules" and have six channels+two built-in?

Great point. Thanks Brent!!

I'll compile a list soon of everyone's suggestions so far. Curious where we land by Friday!

best
