  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Extra $1000 (more or less) for HDRx on Scarlet?

Extra $1000 (more or less) for HDRx on Scarlet?

Quick question. Is the extra $$$ for HDRx or any HDR at all? Reading things here has suggested that the extra is for the X version. Jannard's post suggested it was HDR in general. Can anyone clarify this?

I can’t really clarify it, I hope someone from RED pipes up, but this was also how I read it. I do think he was talking specifically about motion HDR though, not stills. So I think $1000 to get ANY motion HDR.

*EDIT* Thinking about it now though he did say the jury was out on Scarlet still, I assume that's pending a decision to upgrade the hardware to handle HDR?

There is a difference between post processing the sensor image to get HDR and just relying on a wide dynamic range sensor to get greater dynamic range. Although they have not announced the DR for 2/3 sensors RED sensors have more dynamic range than other low cost cams, so giving up extra HDR to save money does not mean giving up wide dynamic range.

True, but HDR expands that range regardless of what the starting point is and that feature looks to cost $1000 extra to implement which I am still all for.

Maybe a compromise...the first scarlet (fixed lens, I believe) could roll off the line without the HDR, but the next version (interchangeable version or S35) could offer it. What if it's an option on either model???

- oh and yes, I would certainly pay an extra grand for it, but not if it takes an extra 3 months

Thanks for the offer and question Jim. No. I'd prefer to have scarlett, especially the fixed model, be at an entry level price so I can get my production company in with red. Later when I have more cashflow to get better stuff I'd just get the epic anyway. An add on module would be cool.

Edit: Not only would I prefer an entry level price point, but also a more immediate time frame!

1.Completely scrap the 2/3 scarlet!
2.Replace 2/3 scarlet with the S35 scarlet and keep the price under 5k.

Can I dream?

I'd rather be shooting on 2/3's any day of the week.

That's a bit more than a dream my friend, more like a miracle.

This is a dead issue.. Look at the poll. Jim's not gonna put in something that would piss off nearly half the people wanting the camera.

:beatdeadhorse5:

How is it you can suggest that saying "No" (or "Yes?") means you'll be "pissed off" if it doesn't go your way? This poll is hardly phrased in a manner from which you can glean real actionable results. It leaves too much in the gray area. A lot of people say yes or no, BUT... And it is those "Buts" that leave things murky. I am not suggesting this poll should go on and on. Just that it will never be something from which a solid conclusion can be drawn.

I don't think it's a dead issue, I think they should make a second version (released when finished) if they do that they aren't going to piss off any potential scarlet buyers but make others very happy, just my opinion I could be wrong though.

I delete my post.. I did not like it..

However, I don't mean it's dead in terms of speaking about it, but I do think in order to motivate RED to include this, the ratio would need to be far more extreme.

Stephen, I think you are more right than wrong.

Steve, I think that the current votes represent a larger number

Terry, I won't be pissed off.. But many people who are saying "no" are citing price as a primary concern.. Many are already upset at the LAST time the Scarlet went up in price (Even though a lot of features were added.. Similar to what may happen here).

As for all the "buts"... Well that's common :)

My "Guess" is that the HDR will not go into Scarlet. More to keep the two products separate than anything else.

Many posters identified K.I.S.S. principle to Scarlet and I must say that this is one of the most compelling reasons to leave HDRx out of Scarlet. I think the beauty and appeal of Scarlet is modest price and high quality of images combined with simplicity. It is a dream "B" camera, behind the scenes camera, run'n'gun camera , crash camera, tight spot camera, ....and I see such product positioning the main purpose of Scarlet. It will be highly desirable by amateurs as well as high-end professionals, not as "crippled" Epic, but rather as simpler, smaller and faster camera to operate. HDRx is just a specialised, advanced feature that probably less than 1% of users will really need, but 100% of users would need to pay 30% more to have it there anyway.

As much as I would love to have Scarlet in my hands, I'd say: drop it.

-->YES!

A thousand times yes!

This is the one feature that's gonna make people swear it was shot on film. I mean, people are gonna say that anyway, but they'd really say it with the HDRx feature. I'd rather have HDRx than even touch focus and stills mode. A camera that shoots 3k with the same DR as the human eye for $6k? What a bargain!!!

Until you use it on epic and then realize how wickedly amazing it is :)

Of course! That's why I want an Epic too... or, should I say: two

Some of us dream in higher dynamic range!

Really? Haven't you been in many situations where being able to dial in 2 - 6 more stops would have been a huge help? In sunny Australia?

I don't find the classic "girl looking out the window with both girl and outside fitting in exposure" so specialized. I'd love to be able to do that with minimal lighting and without gelling or netting the windows without a crew.
That's a situation I'd love to run'n'gun.

I get the budget part, but not the downplaying of that tool. If 2-6 stops didn't matter, we could just stick to the 8 stop budget cams out there already.

C'mon...join the HDaRk side. $1k will take you from real nice cam to Hammer of the Gods class... !:smash:

Sorry, Pawel. I'm not trying to pick on you. I just happened to open up the thread and there you were.

Cheers! I really like your avatar.

HDR for we, the filthy, unwashed masses!

Of course I want the HDR option, and I'd gladly pay $1000+ for it.
But if the choice is NOW vs LATER, I choose NOW.

We've been waiting for years. Sure, many of us can wait longer, but we all know this isn't just a month or two worth of delays. This could push things back by about a year because they'd now need to redesign the boards in the brain, then test it, and hopefully wouldn't need a respin on anything - or find a bug in the new board design. It could easily push Scarlet to 2012 and beyond - giving the competition ample time to close in on it.

Considering they'd have to add a board to the brain, this is a huge upgrade. And quite frankly, I'd rather pay $2500 for an HDR upgrade a-la MX a year from now, if it meant Scarlet could be out before NAB without it.

So my vote is to not add more stuff to the cameras, just finish debugging the features and get them out. We can get upgrades later - some software, some hardware. At some point there has to be a feature lock for release.

Edit: I just read this over and realized it could be seen as negative whine... but believe me it's not. I'm just so excited to get my hands on this thing I'd happily forego this new feature to make that happen sooner.
