Hi guys! Can't understand, can we use atomos samurai or other external recorder with red scarlet and do we really need it or not?

You can, but you don't need to. For example, I have bought a Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 so I can get a quick turn around in jobs where the client wants files delivered in ProRes. The nice aspect about an external recorder, even though you bipass the benefits of shooting RAW for a format that is compressed to a greater degree, is that you can shoot 5K with your Scarlet. Bear in mind that it's 5K capture outputting as 10-bit 1080p. For this you need to enable your 'look around' area of your camera's display (and leave your other settings to 4K or 4K HD).

I won't swap an external recorder for RAW but it is certainly worth having as an option. That's what I love about my Scarlet, the fact that you have options as opposed to a single camera system. Oh yes, and that RED will offer you an upgrade path should you want to move on up to an Epic with the Dragon sensor. ;-)

It would be cool if somebody could post a few second long clip of greenscreen footage from scarlet. One in 4k and then the same shot as recorded full frame/5k in 10bit proress. just to see how the result differ when pulling keys. As the 4k stuff is 7:1 ( or what ever the lowest compression is for scarlet) and the proress stream is actually going without compression down to 1920 with a higher pixel count for the downsampling and then afterwards in 1920 gets compressed to 10bit. I would be happy to do the keying part if some body can upload such files. i.e a proress file that mach a r3d with green screen.

and what is better to use when filming especially r internet... 4k 7:! or 2k 2:1?

Is it possible to trigger the Hyperdeck without an SSD present? Or without the SSD module all together? I'm curious about the cheapest possible starting config for the Scarlet..

yes that should be possible. external recording only or such. Do not remember the exact name of it.... or you just hit record on the recorder...

EXTERNAL Rec on the Scarlet sends a trigger via the SDI connection (and maybe the HDMI? Don't know). SSD MUST be dismounted to use this feature (other modes will operate BOTH record devices I believe). So you need to be sure the Hyperdeck is triggered by the appropriate signal. Works great on my PIX recorder.

Thanks guys, good to know. What about including loop through, for example SDI in/out of a TVLogic 5.6 to Hyperdeck/Pix? Anyone tried that?

I go into the pix first, loop to my alphatron viewfinder, then loop through that to a flanders monitor. I would tend to keep your recorder as the first in the chain.

Can we get some sample video links of Scarlet footage from the Hyperdeck Shuttle ProRes.. specifically the nice 5k full frame look .

On a side note, when we do this for ProRes immediate clients, we roll in REDLog Film. Then the unit behaves like an ALEXA's Log-C. Not a bad way to work actually, it provides a lot more dynamic range. The only thing truly missing here is a proper RLF > Rec709/RG3 LUT. You can always correct from scratch or use the homebrew (not that bad actually) LUTs that are floating around on the forum.

It will trigger over SDI with or without the SSD present on the EPIC, can't speak for the scarlet. When there is no SSD Mag, you have to set it to external recorder so the flag still goes out otherwise it just says insert mag when hitting roll.

We use the PIX240 but any external SDI deck would be able to work in this way if it supports SDI flags. I think the flags are spec as well so it should be a requirement of SDI recorder gear.
