Exporting clip selection from Final Cut X timeline ????

Hi Guys,


I have a whole bunch of short clips in my timeline of an edit done in final cut X and I was wondering what the best way would be to export a selection as individual quicktimes ?

the plugin page also doesn't give any details on the compression options it offers.

I would first take the whole Primary and everything in that Project and make a Compound Clip.
Then duplicate that Project and blade cut each project to whatever portion you need.
Then share/export each project to whatever format you need.

so I need to basically create a new project for each clip that I want to export and then send each project to compressor for a batch render ?

thanks for that, will give that a try, was hoping there would be a quicker way as I have to export around 40 clips :/

hey Bob

thats the same plugin I posted further up..so you reckon this will do ? Im just worried cause it says quicktime reference files...Im wondering what they quality of those will be or if the plugin gives me compression options.

QuickTime reference files means they will point to your original media files (like an alias). So no quality settings required, no quality or disk space lost...

Mikael: ouch then this is not the way to go for me as I will have to send the individual files off without the original :/ damn gotta do it the hard way it seems.

Once you have all the references you can still batch encode them at any quality in compressor...

Yes reference files can be sent to compressor or you can open it and do a "save as self contained file"
Another technique may work which I have tried with audio but not video is using "roles"

Are you trying to export each clip as its own clip?
if so, i have a workflow for this.

I've not yet used FCP X, but on 7 this is workflow:

Go to your project browser and create a new (empty) bin - you call it "Export Clips"

Click anywhere on your timeline and type Command+A to select all the clips

Drag the selected clips from the timeline into your newly created "Export clips" bin.
You il see a Creating Master Clips dialog box while it is transferring the clips.

Now Control-Click on the "Export Clips" Bin and from the drop down menu choose Batch Export.

Click on the Settings button at the bottom of the Batch Export window and make sure you set your destination for your clips as well as checking the Use In and Out checkbox.---otherwise it will export the entire source clip, not just the portion on your timeline.

When all set, press the Export button at the bottom of the Batch Export window and you should be good to go.

Yep this is common basic workflow for most in the past before the ability to export in sections.
I know its 2012 and you think Apple would have thought of this but maybe they figured most savvy users have a workflow to deal with multiple.
If you installed Compressor ($49 App Store) you can send have all the saved QT Ref to bacth easily.
You can do this with Adobe Media Encoder as well.

No, this is for Final Cut Pro....I have not found ANY other program that can batch export individual clips like FCP....or at least no simple/easy solution.

Johnny: Yes i do, each individual clip in my timeline needs to be exported as its own standalone .MOV file. thanks heaps for that, I will give this workflow a go tonight.

argggh help please.

last time this exact process worked perfectly fine, and now that I have another job which requires me to export my timeline clips as individual files it doesn't work :/

I even had to reinstall final cut 7 (after i updated my whole editing suite to final cutx) but when i follow this step by step it keeps exporting the clips in my timeline as one sequence and not individual quicktime clips like before.

You can create compound clips and export those individually - You can also "open a clip in a timeline" by right clicking on it - and add the clip to an export queue that way.

No problem. I would prefer this to work with a selection of clips in the event library as well, but when you select more than one clip, the export menu options are greyed out. I have filed feedback... I ask anyone else to do the same! Oh... and also ask for custom project sizes
