  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Expectations...

Jim, can you go to the warehouse and count the Redvolts you have in stock?^^
Is it enough for us all? When one battery lasts 1 h and the package comes with one, we all will at least need 5 additional redvolts per camera

Brian,

If you want to make your post clear, make it obvious that your expectation of a cheaper Red S35 cameras has nothing to do w/ what we should expect from the November 3rd announcement.

If you feel that I'm conflating your belief that there will be a Epic-S/Scarlet S35-type camera w/ the Nov 3rd announcement, it's only because you posted in a thread that is discussing expectations surrounding that very announcement.

Anyway, I hope to have said my last on this subject.

I actually was expressing a belief about Epic-S/Scarlet S35 and the Nov. 3 announcement. What I wasn't doing was saying that, if it didn't happen that way, Jim was somehow - oh, never mind. I added more clarification to my previous post that might clear that up.

At any rate, the quote of mine you initially responded to was my response to Terry's quote which mentioned Epic-S and wishful thinking regarding an S35 sensor in Scarlet. I tried to make a logical case for my theory and...well, you know the rest.

Otherwise, my posts up until that point in this thread were S35 free. In other words, he started it (read like an 8-year-old would say it).

I will try to be more mindful of how and where I say things in the future.

Dare I say.... "Sprinkles!"

Let's just all Celebrate!

The Anouncement is coming soon, and it will end all Debate and Exceed all our Expectations! And if not then... Eat a Donut!

I have read a lot of the posts regarding Scarlet. There are so many unrealistic expectations that it takes the wind out of our sails.

Some people apparently have no idea what realistic is.

"Why not 28K at 1000fps RAW in a raisin box for $800?"

We are so happy to have a complete competitive advantage. We consider our customers as one of us. What we have always done is beat the competition in price/performance. But the misguided expectations for Scarlet are killing me.

You should expect a lot from us. But within reason. Really.

Measure us against our competitors... not your fantasies.

Nothing competes with EPIC. Nothing will compete with Scarlet... except your wildest dreams.

Get real. Get real before November 3rd. Or you will be unnecessarily disappointed. Which is totally unnecessary.

Jim

Very well put and timely. But Jim wasn't it you guys who influenced our thought process about fantasizing a great camera with all the great features, modularity and at an affordable cost. I think this just made us get too greedy and unrealistic. Time to get real. Waiting for Nov 3rd.. 4th in India.

"Measure us against our competitors... not your fantasies" How? Red don't have competition. Red is humble, caring, Pro consumers/customers/,extremely reasonable, generous, highly advanced in technology. 10 years ago 4k was a fantasy. Red was your fantasy(I guess). Red is a dream come true. I wish Red to go so far ahead of other companies that it becomes the fantasy of competitors to catch up with Red. Red don't have any match on planet earth. Good on you man for looking after us.

The EPIC is already way past my expectations...

I'm more than happy with the performance. Upgrade is the furthermost thing from my mind, I barely using the range of data the camera shoots now.

If the Scarlet is half the camera of EPIC... for what looks like 1/8 the price.. well. there will be a lot of happy campers out there

Measure us against our competitors... not your fantasies.

I've been thinking about this one.

I get that you guys want to manage expectations a bit. I mean look at how the press slammed the iPhone 4S, which is actually a pretty kick ass upgrade. They slammed it, not because of any failing of the product, but because their expectations were for something called iPhone 5 featuring a slick new design.

Yeah, but look at it, by all accounts iPhone 4S is Apple's most popular model to date - and that is saying A LOT.

I'd be very happy to "fall below expectations" just like Apple.

All that reasoning though doesn't address my central concern.

I have no choice but to compare Red to my fantasies ... they are the only thing competitive with your actual products.

I seriously think this line should be used for promotional purposes on red.com - it sums up every justification for raised expectations and excitment for November 3.

To Jim and Co I say this:
Dissapoint me.. go on.... try. Because unless you're planning on a VHS-revival, I think you'll do just fine ;-)

Help me out here.

Measure us against our competitors... not your fantasies.

Hard to follow what is being said here. Expect something that competes with your wildest dreams, but falls short of your fantasies?

So if things are within reason, why is a hole burning in Jim's head?

This entire Nov. 3 rollout is almost like a PR microcosm of RED.

You misread.. Except your wildest dreams, not expect.

Help me out here.

No, I know. I'm seeing, "Don't compare Scarlet to your fantasies. Compare it to your wildest dreams...because it will compete with them."

If someone at RED could reply to these questions it would be much appreciated - hopefully on topic.

I have realist expectations, only a short time away now :-)

For us NON RED users at present BUT! hoping to be very shortly.

On the 4th November once all is announced, it would be great to see if possible.

A realist date for camera or camera releases, this year next Jan Feb etc

BE GREAT IF

Some footage be realised we can play from the NEW Scarlet in the native file formate not just mp4 e.g. Scarlet if shooting at 3k some 3K files in their REDCODE RAW R3D Native file or files.
So us non RED users can sort out some work flows and can hit the ground running once cameras are shipped.

3.Will RED be supporting FCPX (My clients like it a lot, so hoping RED will be soon be releasing ways of importing files natively) apart from through Pro Res format, or does the wrapper from FCP7
still apply to FCP X.

Many thanks

No, I know. I'm seeing, "Don't compare Scarlet to your fantasies. Compare it to your wildest dreams...because it will compete with them."

haha, yeah, it`s kind of a riddle, took me some time, too :D

but then, who are these "competitors" of red mr. jannard is speaking?
let`s say scarlet`s still gonna be the 3K, 2/3 camera like originally planned, then they`re competing with sony`s and panasonic`s and the other broadcast camera manufacturers (but not arri, sony f35/f65, the dslr producers etc.) - in this case they may have won over their competitors and quite some people will be happy, but a lot of potential customers with too high hopes will be disappointed (according to some polls and discussions I have read, a big chunk of people are setting high hopes on november 3rd`s announcements and await a S35 camera)

if it is indeed the case that the former 2/3 scarlet turned into a S35 camera, then red has won on any given area and they`ll indeed never be out of backorders again...

i`ll just wait and stay curious and don`t read too much into anything I read here and elsewhere ;)

I expect the camera will weigh 85 lbs, acquire 720x480 (interlaced) monochrome images at 6 fps, shoot to five inch floppy disc, have a fixed 1.3x F4.5-5.6 plastic zoom lens, and cost $300k each. Trying to keep my expectations low...

Help me out here.

Not really he is saying that the only way you will be let down is if you compare scarlet to your fantasies, if you measure them by the competition you will be happy no matter what is his point, but as soon as you put it up against your wild imagination of what you think is possible you will be most likely let down.

So, compare us to what other companies are actually shipping and not the dream camera in your head, and if you do no matter what you will be happy with the announcements.

And yes it is a whole microcosm for the red PR issues as in how many people misinterpret very simple messages and then blow the conclusions they make from them way out of proportion, rather than asking for simple clarification, or thinking rationally about it for a second.(you are not one of these but look around and you will find plenty)

Whether it is Scarlet or not, there is and has been a lower cost S35 camera on the general road map since the modular line was first announced. Sooner or later Red will make one, regardless of what they choose to call it.
They are thinking about us, and about the market as it now exists vs 3 years ago.
You can bet they won't leave the F3 market range empty for very long. Whether they can or will do an S35 model significantly under $10k is anybody's guess for now.

From what I have observed in terms of sensor production and volume Sony and Canon are currently the only people other than Red capable of releasing inexpensive S35 solutions. Sony has shown the F3 and FS100 with an impressive price gap and currently they are the only option at those costs.

I believe Canon will probably produce two cameras with a gap in features and functionality as well. They may potentially release a FF35 format as well if they observed what sold well for them for the last 3 years.

What Red has the upper hand on here is the technology that they can incorporate into an inexpensive solution. Leagues beyond what Sony and Canon have released. That's why this could be an interesting and competitive marketplace come November. If done properly, Red can TKO the competition as well. That would change everything.

I have never used depth mapping before. I have always thought of it as green screen type shots. So I may be a bit ignorant when I say this, with a 2/3rds chip plus depth mapping, could you not "simulate" a very shallow DOF in post?

Heck, maybe even set your Depth of Field digitally, which the advantage would go to a smaller chip? Again, I know little of the subject. (Real questions, I do not know.)
