E-mail pasted here in full. The first paragraph regarding a tax exempt question is because I was trying to purchase these licenses for a community media center here in my city that I'm helping to build. We aren't going to be switching all the Avids in our production company over to FCPX just yet, lol. And after getting this message from Apple, probably not for a LONG while. important part that's relevant to post houses is in bold below:

Dear Dominic,

My name is Tim, and I am a Senior Advisor with the iTunes Store. I am sorry about the difficulties you have encountered when attempting to purchase multiple copies of Final Cut Pro X. I will do everything I can to ensure that you are taken care of in this matter.

First, please accept my apologies for the incorrect information provided in the previous emails. Although the Terms and Conditions for the iTunes Store state that the iTunes Store is for personal, non-commercial use, that is not the case for the Mac App Store. For your questions about tax exemption, please contact tax-question@apple.com to see what can be done in this case.

I also understand that you would like to purchase multiple copies of that App. At this time, the Mac App store only allows a Mac App to be purchased from an account one time, so to purchase 12 copies of the app, you would need to use 12 Apple IDs to purchase from the Mac App Store. The billing system will sometimes block the account creation if they are using the same credit card on each of them, so if possible, having the purchases go through separate payment methods should work. There is currently no method of having one account to manage multiple licenses of an App.

Please note that the sections of the Terms and Conditions that address Mac App licenses are titled "LICENSE OF MAC APP STORE AND APP STORE PRODUCTS", and "MAC APP STORE PRODUCT USAGE RULES".

Thank you for your understanding, Dominic. I hope you find this information helpful.

Sincerely,

Tim
iTunes Store Senior Advisor

Please Note: I work Sunday - Thursday, 9:00am - 6:00pm PST

This also has obvious implications for OSX Lion. I don't know about you guys but I have no interest in managing 15 itunes accounts with 15 unique credit card numbers just to upgrade the OS on all of our computers just because Apple doesn't want to burn DVDs anymore.

Why would you want to purchase 12 copies? You are entitled to install on multiple machines.

Oh. Really? Well that's something they should be advertising as a difference in the new version. I wasn't entitled to do that with FCP7. Also it seems like the senior apple guy would have told me that.

Am I entitled to install OSX Lion on 12 machines too? Unlikely.

I can't believe I'm even looking for this in the T&C because of how incredibly unlikely it is, but I can't find it. Where exactly did you read or hear that $299 gets me multiple installs on multiple machines(legally)?

Apple is clearly still working through how to handle more 'serious' software through the App Store. Reading something about Apple's commitment to pro video editing into App Store issues is kind of silly. This seems frankly just seems like screwy internal coordination between corporate divisions, which will probably go away once someone high enough up the org chart notices and gets a chance to do something about it.

(Apple has remarkably little of this sort of internal coordination issue compared with, say, Microsoft, but they're not immune. Another recent example: why are FaceTime, iChat and iMessage not all integrated?)

it's just another app to the app store. you can have multiple copies on multiple macs and pay once so long as they all use the same itunes user id. we do it all the time with iphone, ipad and mac osx apps.

now if you're using it for commercial purposes, apple does require 1 license per mac. how you would technically do that without creating many itunes user ids, i do not know.

Well, this App Store only distro method is a corporate sea change that they've clearly put a LOT of thought into. They better figure it out before OSX Lion or they will lose a LOT of potential business on the enterprise level. Not even talking about post houses for that.

I don't know what to say except yes, obviously. That's what we're talking about.

FULL STOP

Apple has said that they are going to address volume licenses later.

You'll be able to buy volume licenses, but you shouldn't be doing that through the standard App store.

So, you are going about it bass ackwards by trying to buy multiple copies today.

This issue will also affect purchases of OS X Lion.

The same unspecified "We will have a volume plan" PR statement applies there as well.

The Mac App store lets you install the software on any machine authorized to access the same Apple iTunes account thingy. I think you can authorize 5 Mac and 10 total devices to use the same iTunes account. Something like that.

I don't recall if it will allow you to run it simultaneously ... and I haven't tried it myself, because I am presently a one mac house.

you used to be able to by a volume license and call it a day. THAT'S pro. i guess you just have to make 11 more emails, and credit cards to do what you want. :p

you know what's really pro? full volume and upgrade support. yearly fee, volume licenses, upgrade to newest version at no charge like Avid does. perfect for post houses and institutions.

I don't think you can read into their commitment of pro video editing based on this idiotic purchasing setup, but you can sure read into their understanding of how the real world works for shops with many seats of software. Adobe has a great online software license management system and you can down load their software from their own site (app store) but they seem to understand how to deploy licenses the way shops need them managed, with a single line of credit and login. Apple's old system was fine too, but this is so dumb, they broke something that didn't need fixing and there is no excuse for it, they have single user licenses... they have an app store... the two don't work together if you want to buy in quantities higher than 1.

Remember kids, you can only have 5 computers authorized on one iTunes account.
Check iTunes under Store> View my account or google it.

Hope this helps.

Sorry champ, but you're doing this discussion bass ackwards. I'm going about it the RIGHT way by planning ahead. I've been doing this for long enough to know that I should get these questions answered now rather than later. Not trying to purchase anything today other than the ONE copy I bought just to check it out.

I'm posting my findings DIRECT FROM APPLE to assist others in their endeavors to plan ahead as well.

Edit: Do you have a link to Apple's plan to address volume licensing later? Did they define later?

Apple released info about how they're handing this with Lion. I suspect similar arrangements will be made with FCP X, they just need some time to sort everything out.
