  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Rocket update...

Actually, I'd prefer REDCINE over RED ALERT. Give me a REDCINE that can share look file information with RA, REDRUSHES, REDLINE, the camera, any other app using the SDK. And make it have a REDRUSHES style interface built in with the ability to create and manage multiple jobs in the queue.
 
What happen connecting to RedRocket that is pcie x8 lane to a x1 lane?...

I am thinking to express card and laptop...(only x1 lane)

I've been using REDCINE a lot more than RED Alert! too...

Be nice to take all of the best of RA! and merge it into a new REDCINE and just update REDCINE as needed.

But still, luv to hear from RED on what the PC plan for RR is...

That will give you a few more connectors.

Why did you need more than than two power connectors? Does the Red Rocket require a 12v 8-pin from the power supply?

And the 4870 does require two ports on the back.

It was mentioned that it would be something to test, and I'm sure someone will do so if RED does not. But don't expect much from that combination.

PC/mac version of RA for REDrocket is coming out in parallel with REDrocket.

We have the pieces on order so we will test that implementation. I personally am hoping it'll work :)

word of caution about that board... it needs an extended-EATX (double extended??) capable case which is mostly only available through supermicro.
 
Since RED ROCKET is going to be released soon (and this thread is getting pretty long), it seems we should create a separate section for it here on RED User.

Maybe a mod can add it into the DSMC area beneath the RED RAY section?

And another caution...

I love SuperMicro cases, well built, great cooling channels, parts readily available. I use them for my servers.

But the power supplies, particularly the dual redundant power supplies and case fans are INCREDIBLY loud.

This guy http://supermicro.com/products/chassis/3U/836/SC836TQ-R800.cfm sounds like jet taking off when it powers up.

No really, a jet taking off.

I tend to use Supermicro too, just not for mobile systems and there is no such thing as extended eATX or double extended.
It is either extended or it is not, please please be more specific. Thank you.
 
I'd like to see the SDK portion made modular, so we don't have to wait for ever increasing numbers of apps to get updated support when a new build like 20 is released.

Think of it like a device driver. One for Windows, one for OSX and one for Linux distributions. Then all the apps associated with parsing R3D files instantly get updated at the same time (as long as the API hooks don't change). PhysX is a good example of this in use today, IMHO.

And add my voice to those calling for the unified .look file structure to come a bit faster! I would dearly love to set my look and curves in RedCine and upload it to camera....

Yes, the Rocket requires a power feed cable.

The Y-cable looks like an option, but I wonder if the Mac Pro power supply will be overloaded with a 4870 or other high power consuming video card plus a Red Rocket.

This RedRocket will be a perfect tool to speed up a daVinci withough having to spend a ile of money for daVinci-made-hardware.
In theory I should, by august, be able to by a RedRocket through daVinci (with some money on top) and simply plug it into my Resolve.

And then getting an extreemly competative box that will kick any "Color"-suite's ass, any day. And even with 24/7/365 phone/email/skype/VNC-support.

I bet you a million dollars that there are a lot more daVinci-users that has had VNC-remte login from daVinci-HQ, then Color-users that has had Apple logged in over VNC (or even a direct phone conversation)

I'm a daVinci Colorist for about 7years. And since we bought our Resolve we've had an extreemly good suppport from them. We pay good money for that support, but it's sure worth it when you sit at midnight with clients and run into a bug with no workaround.
I'm sure other ColorCorectors (Nucoda/BaseLight/Pablo/Luster/Scratch etc) has the same support, or at least try to. But I've never heard anyone talk about Apple-support like this.


To compare Color with daVinci (and others) is just a joke. Any DoP / Director that was experience in commersial-grading (thatts when you are spending 8hrs on a 30s spot, having 6people from the client and agency saying contradicting thing, and tweeking skintone for hours and hours) knows what I'm talking about.
You just can't do that in "Color" with the interactivety, speed and flexibility.


Don't get me wrong though. I've got nothing agoinst "Color".
i't a damn good app. It's relly good for what its made for. It brought ColorCorection "to the people" and have for sure changed the grading industry (for good or bad, depends on who you are and how you make money).

Last year I was out at my countryhouse fixing the roof. I spent all day up there putting tiles in. During the day my brother was editig on his iMac.
In the evening we cooked dinner and graded the musicvideo in "Color".
(and talk about D65 lighting... you should see the swedish summer-dusk-skylight. Perfect ambient lighting for grading:)
We sent some stills to the director using a 3G-modem. Got it approved and uploaded the final render to a FTP-site over night.
No way I could have done that with a daVinci!

while i don't disagree that Davinci and Color were developed with different goals in mind, I do disagree that color can not be used in a high end commercial environment with clients in the room. We do this on a daily basis and have award winning results (the other nominees were both graded on the davinci).

in fact, i would argue, because of the extraordinary overhead that Davinci users must pay to stay in the game, you're limited in terms of how much time and creativity you can give to any given project. What I mean is, the same budget that buys you four hours in a Davinci, might buy you 16 in a Color suite. With all that extra time, you can accomplish things you'd never have the time to do in traditional telecine because no one could afford. Or spend the same amount of time for 1/4 the cost. Most of my clients would rather have the same results for less money, or more time in the suite for the same money, than pay for the overhead of traditional telecine suites.

The Davinci is an amazing tool, it certainly has the advantages of being a product 10, 15 years in the making. But Color is only getting better. Five years down the line, is there going to be enough of a difference to justify the $225,000 in additional overhead? For many of you, it will be. After all, there are still people that cut on Avid, but ...

Alex, love your work man! You put on a good show at the FCPUG a couple years back. I think Color can be very effective. Just needs some kinks worked out, especially with some of the RED workflows. And uniformity with Final Cut Pro. If you could drop your Final Cut timeline as is into Color without a bunch of workarounds it would elevate the app to a much higher level. Can't wait to see what a combination of Snow Leopard, Final Cut Studio 3 and Red Rocket will do for my post workflow.
