  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Everything you wanted to know about the EPIC Canon Mount

that's the question... will this be the same mount for the scarlet...

Sure, you can buy the Scarlet with this mount.

The base model (under $10K) Scarlet brain comes with an Aluminum version of this mount, which isn't available just yet, but will ship with Scarlets in early December. Scarlet with Ti PL mount (same mount as on EPIC) should start shipping on the 17th... That's 10 days! Woohoo!

I think I saw my Canon mount on a Scarlet! AHHHH!!!!!

My 2 EPIC shoot went to a 2 5D (cough, hack) shoot because the Director wanted to handhold the naked EPIC/5" touch with the 70-200/easy rig and use his new fisheye canon zoom inside a crate that the actor picks up.. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR! I'm trying sooooo hard to push this baby on jobs and somehow canon knows it and is jinxing me!! lol

WAAAAAAAAAAH..

I just feel for people expecting to get a Scarlet on the 17th with a Canon Mount? Thats going to be interesting...

Time to start charging canon batteries.. :-(

I ordered the Scarlet with the Canon mount. 2 questions:
1. Can I use the Bomb EVF and the 5" mmonitor at the same time?
2. If I want to use the Bomb EVF only, how do I control iris?

Thank you

Having owned a machine shop in my other life I can tell you Titanium is a difficult metal to machine:

http://www.americanmachinist.com/304/Issue/Article/False/77297/

There is almost a black art to figuring out the feeds and speeds for each part you program.

Is stainless any easier? I've done some stainless, and it is tricky!
Stainless has about the same coefficient of expansion as titanium, and is probably more rugged too. The weight of such a small piece isn't much of a factor, but it doesn't sound as cool.....

I would like to clarify the interworking between EF-S lenses and EPIC/Scarlet with canon EF mount.
Is this assumption correct? --> Any canon EF-S lens can be safely used on the EPIC/Scarlet with canon EF mount without any kind of adapter needed.

Off course, only characterized lenses from the OP list will allow for AF to be used. All the rest though get IRIS control?

You still don't have it... ? ... wow!
I'd really like to know how many they sold in one hour! But does sound like there is only one machinist knocking out a few a day.

I think I'm months and months from getting my CANON mount orders... I ordered a few a couple of weeks after. !!! I was hoping to get mine by early December for a multi country shoot we are doing... JOKE !!!!! ... yes yes.. stop laughing!

Ill stick with my superspeeds. :)

We got the first of two canon mounts a while back. Still waiting on the second, which was ordered first strangely enough. I wonder if thos Al mounts will start shipping before the Ti ones get out of backorder

I hope RED gets the Ti EOS mounts out of backorder before they start shipping the Al mounts. I would imagine that's what the plan is.

Maybe the Al mounts are sufficient for Canon use? That seems to be the overwhelming implication of the Scarlet announcement.

So how much for just the Al Canon mount for my Epic?

Unless you are hulking around some of the bigger white lenses, the Al mount should be more than sufficient.

If I would get it within the next few days, I'd order the Al version in addition to my Ti-version. The wait is killing me... Or if they let me pay some $ to skip to the front of the line - well there's still money left in my account...

BTW: what's the weight difference between the two versions?

It does seem like the Ti mount is a bit overkill. If they could get these Al mounts out the door right now I would take that over the Ti mount for sure.

Mark, it could be worse. For instance, you could be waiting on a phantom Nikon mount that hasn't even been released yet and when it is, there will be thousands who stay on this forum 24/7 who will reserve a year's worth of production in ten minutes time before anyone who has cameras waiting even learns they are in the store.

I was going to wait awhile for a $2k Ti Canon, but if Al Canon is available for $500, I want one now.

What's the latest on people receiving these or at least receiving the e-mail that they're ready to ship?

I'm dying for mine - ordered the morning after they went on sale. No word as of yet.
