  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Everything you wanted to know about the EPIC Canon Mount

Nikon mount is still in testing... it has a longer development cycle due to the requirement of the Iris mechanics. Think October.

Jarred, will the Nikon mount work with their image stabilization mechanism (VR)? Also, any update on the timeframe?

Is it any difference in deliver time between the Ti and Ai canon mount?

This isn't really a question specific to the mount, but please bear with me. This seems like the best place to ask it at the mment.

Is there any chance that the auto focus system might reduce breathing in still glass, or is that a mechanical function that can not be compensated for even with ultra fast and accurate focusing and lens profiling? To rephrase: Is it possible to profile the breathing characteristics of a lens, and program it out or reduce it?

no buddy... its a mechanical issue... in order to avoid breathing, you need bigger lenses and more distance between each lens, you do it in such a way where you lose all breathing. So cinema lenses are deliberately made so huge just so you wont have any breathing... which is one of the reasons why they are more expensive. Of course, they are more expensive because, they have to construct larger lenses/larger in diameter, and increase distance between optics, also much more accuracy in focal measurements, and not to mention avoid lens barreling, distortion, and chromatic aberration as much as possible because those are too disgusting in motion and a Pain to fix in post... which is why a 50mm canon costs a G.. and a leica.. 500G's :p

Thanks,

I get that cine lenses are bigger and that contributes to their cost, and to a lesser extent understand that those things improve their accuracy. I appreciate that the particulars probably aren't something that can be explained adequately in a couple paragraphs but thanks for the reply.

So are you saying that breathing is not repeatable either precisely or on average even in a laboratory setting... That it is a basic lack of mechanical precision? It's truly slop?

The actual distance the elements travel is so minute that the mechanicals can't hit the mark? It's not something that a larger, or finer tooth gear could solve, or is that one of the improvements made in rehousing?

Please do pardon my ignorance, but you were joking about 1/2 a million for a single lens right? You're making sport of me? Buddy? :p I've never heard of such a thing, but then I would never be shopping for one either. ;-)

As far as I know the breathing is repeatable, it's just the design of the lens doesn't reduce or eliminate it.

I bet, if you characterize the lens in detail to know how it breathed, and recorded focus movements as metadata along with the video stream, you could automate removing the breathing to a great extent in post. Could be an interesting bit of software, that.

If you have a zoom with a motor attached that synced to the focus pull, you could in theory do a slight zoom in or out to compensate for the breathing.

My guess is that the Red zoom lenses will offer this exact functionality, since they are rumoured to have all three FIZ motors inside the lens for complete electronic control. Will be fantastic options when they are out, that's for sure!

HTH

Cheers from Tokyo,

Paul :)

Jarred, are your upcoming electronic lenses going to be available on Canon as well as PL Mount? I think that would help Scarlet owners a lot. Any ETA on them? Or was the line destroyed by the same forces that defeated Scarlet Fixed?

The good news is that he was joking.

The bad news is not by nearly as much as you might hope. RED's Prime set is $19,000 for five lenses. People here were happy about how insanely cheap they were; I thought that price was an incredibly expensive sick joke until I found out what Ketch Rossi and friends pay for a similar set of Leica primes - if my memory serves it's about $100k.

I asked why people would buy primes instead of zooms for these staggering prices. The answer is that they are much sharper and deliver much higher light sensitivity and corresponding short depth of field. They are also beautifully made and of course most photographers love that.

Here's a typical short range cine zoom for a shade over $20k.

There is also a 24-290 available for about $60,000 + about $3,500 in accessories. Unfortunately at over 24 pounds it's a shade too heavy for handholding :(. On the other hand, it's optically excellent.

As you can tell, this is a completely different financial world from what still shooters like us are used to :(. I'm sure you won't be surprised to know that most people rent these instead of buying. Most of these lenses are also completely manual. No auto focus or power zoom. It's a totally different world.

i feel you :) Really hope existing orders of the canon mount get shipped out before scarlet ships. i placed my order within 5 hours after it appeared in the store, so i hope next week it will ship...

I placed my order within 45 min of it going up in the Red Store, before Jarred's first post. Still no email.

Same for me, really dying for this piece of kit... Tested Ketch's out and loved it...

@David Dennis,

Yes, of these lenses I am aware. I hope to be in the market for a set of RPPs in a few years, but I'm happy to rent Master Primes or Cookes. :-)

@Aaron

To do it automatically in post would be really nice, but with some look around it should be easy enough to animate out. I think.

Is this a real option? I looked in the store but didn't see a link to order an Al Canon mount separate from a SCARLET package. Am I overlooking the obvious, as usual?
As I understand it, the Al mount won't be ready till December, and the initial stock will go to the Scarlet cameras that are packaged with the Al mount. I haven't seen any word on when the Al mount will be available (and shipping) as a standalone item, though.

Will the aluminum Scarlet Canon mount work on the Epic? Are there any plans to release the Aluminum Canon mount as a stand alone component?

If the aluminum Scarlet Canon mount DOES work on the the Epic... anyone Scarlet owners want to work out a trade for my PL Ti mount?

Anybody tried the Canon EF-S 17-55/2.8 IS USM AF (APS-C) already? Is there any vignetting in 4K?

Jarred,

Can you comment on the responsiveness of the Redmote Pro and Canon L Series glass? Could you 'competently, accurately, and quickly' pull focus with this system? ie if one was looking at setting a kit up and deciding on glass would you recommended (given the above) the Canon glass? Responsiveness though? :-)

Lens settings in meta data in future ?

Lens settings in meta data in future ?

I would like to know if there will be new meta data recorded that will track the lens data that may be now available with the new Canon mount ?
I would like to manage and correct lens aberrations via post image processing using lens profiles ( perhaps Adobe lens profiles ), and I need some lens settings to direct this.
-Les

-- edit -- I see in an earlier post that the data is all in the r3d meta data, fantastic!
