  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Everything you wanted to know about the EPIC Canon Mount

Question about iris control. I assume that you can dial any iris F number you need, lets say F5.6 etc.
Is there any way to change iris during shoot? I mean in the middle of recording I would like to change iris to larger/smaller aperture. If so, how is to done? In stop increments, fraction of stops, or can it be done smoothly without steps?

Any news on being able to mess with the focus...

EX: using the redmote pro to turn the 40 degree focus turn into 360 degrees?

There was a lot of talk about this type of stuff originally but I haven't heard much about it lately.

I can't speak for this mount, but with my old Birger mount on the Red One it was 1/4 stop increments and not a smooth transition. That's a limitation of the lens, not the mount, as the lenses were never designed for continuous iris pulls. It's always possible that Red can create some smoothing algorithms, but that's not information I'm privy to or knowledgeable on. I'd guess it'd be hard given Erik Widding couldn't do it for the Birger.

HTH!

Looking forward to this mount more than anything, since I only shoot with Canon stills lenses for all my own work (client shoots where I'm not the DP or director obviously choose PL a lot of the time).

Cheers from Tokyo,

Paul :)

This looks awesome!

One question though. I remember hearing that you were making the machined canon mount for $2000 and a regular one for cheaper. Are there still plans for a cheaper option?

  1. Excellent picture! Your work, Jarred?
  2. I love the design on this particular element. It seems like it's a little more intricate in terms of machining than some of the other components - the little red alignment dot, the machined pattern on the cap, the fading texture on the locking ring…really, a great marriage of function and design.
  3. Titanium lens mount; I don't know what other companies are doing this, but I think it's brilliant and will be another aspect of RED that sets a new standard for what is acceptable.
  4. A locking ring for canon lenses! Finally.
  5. Not directly related, but I'm also excited to hear about the unified firmware that you all are working with. It will no doubt make life very straightforward when shooting with multiple cameras and multiple mounts to only have to worry about one set of firmware data.

I thought there was going to be a $ 500 canon mount?

There was, at one time, consideration of producing an aluminium mount for the camera. RED has decided not to produce the aluminium mount going forward, and will be making mounts from titanium only.

From RED Leader: "Additional note: We have discontinued the aluminum PL mount option for EPIC.

This decision appears to have carried over to the Canon mount for Epic as well.

Now, I would expect that leaves the door open for third-party vendors to create their own mounts out of whatever they want...so long as it goes through the RED Approval process.

And, since everything is open to change, RED may adjust its opinion with the launch of more budget-conscious cameras like the Scarlet or Epic-S. Or they may not!

Jarred,

What! No support for Jim's EF 1200mm f/5.6L USM !! (Does he still have it?)

Other than that it look rock solid and the lenses will break long before the mount. Now we need titanium barrel lenses...

Exactly! Well done Red Team! This completes DSMC! I can't wait to get mine!

And one more thing, WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How much focus control is there through the regular/vanilla REDmote? I mean, I know the RMpro is gonna have an actual focus knob, but can use the wheel on the current RM for focus?

Might be a dumb question, but I'd rather be safe than sorry: Will using vintage lenses or dummy-adapted lenses (e.g. Nikkor-to-EOS) damage the mount in any way? Focus marks and infinity focus will probably be off, but I'm talking about the electronics of the mount.

Also, for the sake of clarity, I'm guessing this will bolt right on to Epic-S out of the gate, right?

Side note; is the Tokina 11-16 in the current list of 3rd part lenses?

Jarred posted the following, which seems to answer in the affirmative.
both REDMOTES will " Manually " control focus.. the REDMOTE PRO uses a proper focus knob.. the REDMOTE you use the scroll wheel that surrounds the NAV.

And, if I'm not mistaken, this mount should be ready to roll for Epic-X/M/S and Scarlet Interchangeable.

Jarred, this is great news, are there any Sigma brand lenses profiled as of yet?

Thanks

Depends on the lens.. if the iris motor on the lens is a stepper motor with distant steps, then it will be a very rough pull. if the motor is smooth for the iris, it will go down in 1/4 stops and a lot smoother.

1. Yes thanks :)
