  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Everything changes...

After what i have read here and there i have come to the conclusion that Jim & KETCH ROSSI are up to something big... Whats left after a Hollywood studio - cinema camera - player and projector ? the whole dam planet thats what :)

Hehe NAB will Be FUN

does this mean you found a bigger location for the party? Kind of super bummed about it being oversold... i mean its great for RED but sucks for people who spent a LOT of money on airfare and
didn't get a chance to register... now they have to not get in? That does NOT sound like RED. Red always finds a way.

please look into this situation... Im on the list. 2 of my investors I invited are NOT on the list. Things change Jim... but this is really a buzz kill way to kick off NAB.

uh sorry, we are full. ? really? say it isn't so!

5K is plenty enough resolution, and already the sensor size is at the limit of coverage for many lenses (not past the limit, but right at the edge). More resolution at some point becomes silly, and will make post and archival nightmare situations. Please, no 6K - few real working producers want it, and we certainly don't.

You want 6k you just don't know you do--you're making a bunch of incorrect assumptions which is what's tripping you up. 6k isn't just about 6k and Full Frame isn't just about Full Frame.

- Canon glass regularly covers full frame. RED has made a big deal about the Canon mount.
- Anamorphic 35mm is taller than S35 so a 4:3 crop of a Full Frame sensor could handle anamorphic at 4k/5k.
- If you put in a chip which offers Full Frame you don't have to use the whole frame you can always crop. So to maintain pixel density and crop out 4k s35 you would need a 6.5k full frame chip.
- DSMC. If you have a DSMC camera you want to be able to flip between shooting Full Frame stills one day on Canon and then throw on your PL mount and shoot 5k Anamorphic the next day.

Canon glass might - but the edges are not as perfect as more toward the center. The edges are where the problems happen, if any. I prefer cine glass, which does not often look too good toward the edges.
OK on anamorphic - but certainly not an everyday concern for the vast, vast majority of work.
OK on cropping to be back where we are - makes sense
DSMC - I see the logic - but 5K, even 4K stills off any Red are already fantastic - there is no pressing need for more res.

Here is a last thought: Some of us here do not care about size/weight much. The Red One is light enough that you can run on Steadicam, jibs (at least, Kessler jibs, less solid ones we have had problems), etc. with no issue. Alexa is just past that limit and introduces shooting problems because of that. But that is a LOT of weight. We personally do not need to hold a camera in the palm of our hands. Why would we ever want to do that? I understand some people here do doco on the road a lot, and so they have concerns in that area, but that is not the case for everyone here. We have all kinds of awesome crew to help us on every shoot, and nice big trucks. We just want image quality and reliability.

You think the RED Dragon is coming out for NAB?

I like to assume they'd finally announce the upgrade with specs. They said (if this will work out) that the upgrade will be happening this year. So the full announcement should be happening sometime soon.
Just don't know if that would interfere too much with redray and the red laser announcements. that's what makes me be a bit unsure.

NAB speculations...

Dragon preview - technology preview, releasedate: Unknown
REDray - preview. Announcement of technology and distribution partners. Releasedate: Within 6 months
Red ProPrimes Updated:
New series or just replacement of the wider ones for lighter lenses.
Accurate focus markings
All RED glass inkl the zooms updated to work @ 5k

Epic, enabling of burst-mode and 720p highspeed recording
Prores/DNx module
New SSD design with taps for both viewfinder and LCD
Update for the Bomb. Hardware or firmware, whatever works

Scarlet: Enabling of burst mode, 1k, 720p and 25fps HDRx/50p for PAL land
New Rocket that actually can deal with Epic 5k images
Redcode RGB, ready for download and distribution

This pretty much sums it all up for me, too! Nice List, Gunleik!

Maybe we'll see the resurrection of the Scarlet 2/3" :)

If he does, it might be ten times more difficult, market wise, to do than before, as the competitors are finally moving there slow time lines up to 4k and it is a more suitable time for them to do 4k, where as before (two to four years ago) you could have caught them with their pants down.

I wish I was on Red's board.

I know. But the Scarlet 2/3" is - like Epic is and R1 was, a camera that fills a space that noone tries to take.

But S35 is the name of the game these days. Thanks to RED! :)

And it is not hard to see why they chose to do the current Scarlet instead of the 2/3" back last fall.

And of course, it would've been a biggie back in 2009.

I can see all that.

Still... such an entertaining idea.
A bit like digital Bolex :)
