  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Everything changes...

yea, i remember thats what they were saying. Who knows though what they are working in their secret labs. All im saying is that id be ok if my scarlet didnt get dragon and instead was able to function like epic. That would be awesome.

Jim seems to love spreading his enthusiasm after midnight. I wonder how he sleeps at night -- if, in fact, he does :)
I think its great how Jim's words stir up so much (60+ responses so far) controversy and speculation among us.

Jim, Jarred, et al -- Clearly your vision and formula is working and now the masses are all paying attention and competition is scrambling to play catch-up. I love it! I am behind you and share in both your vision and enthusiasm.

Thank you for making truly awesome feats of camera engineering in the R1 and DSMC platforms. I, for one, am glad they are the price they are. I WANT for Red to turn a reasonable profit and be around for years to come, and for that to happen you have to make some money. R&D costs money, creating production lines with top of the line equipment and tooling costs money, skilled labor costs money, marketing, well you get the idea....... SO, thanks for having the cojones to make something no one ever tried before and pushing through all the barriers, and not just settling for another cookie-cutter 1080p camera for $3000 because you could sell millions of units to the masses.

Finally, I'm glad you guys sorted out the whole backorder thing.

Keep up the great work!

Define "an arm and a leg" I'd guess about 10k if it's actually possible.

Jim said it would cost less than a Scarlet Body. My money is on $5-7.5k. I don't expect an epic but it would be nice if Scarlets could get a Dragon+ with slightly enhanced framerates if there are none on the table otherwise.

The idea of upgrades is to give better performance to our customers. Obsolescence obsolete. Keep your iron current.

Jim

i commend you on your will to be noble Jim and not rape the peasants so to speak :)

That's the ride I signed up for Jannard. I appreciate your thinking from a user point of view, not a marketer. One day soon, within 5 years. There will be a 2lbs camera more powerful and the R1 or Epic. I'd like to see you guys make that camera first.

It used to be that technology advanced at a predetermined pace. You bought a camera or computer and it was good for a couple of years. Then you bought a new one. And it was good for the next couple of years.

Things are different now. Things change much more rapidly. Almost every week. New capabilities happen every time you turn around. You have to pay attention.

At RED, we make you stay awake. New firmware builds happen often. REDCINE-X updates happen all the time. New color science. New features are enabled. Improvements happen often... usually free.

The idea of buying a new camera every time something new comes along is just too expensive. That is why we subscribe to the "update" philosophy.

"Everything can, and will, be made better. It is just a matter of when and by whom." Trust us to keep you current.

Jim

If Canon can update their entire camera for $3,500 maybe RED can update the sensor for $2000? Who knows?

Do we even any an idea of what the Dragon sensor is going to add to our camera's?

R1 M 4k and 2k 120fps DR=13.5?
R1 MX/Epix 5k, 2k 300fps DR =17?
Dragon?

My guess... 6k, 4k 300fps. DR= same

I would agree with you if it was a remake; it was sufficiently made the first time. But something new set in that same universe? That has me excited--as does 'Prometheus'! Blade Runner is my favorite movie of all time and I trust Ridley Scott's vision that this will be something special.

I'd like a "prequel" in the same universe. I'd like to see attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion and c-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate.

The old monstro specs went up to 6K with the FF sensor size. So dragon will probably be the FF version of the actual S35 sensor.
But who knows what they come up with... I'd say we'll know next week, so wait and see.

...I just hope that some day we'll get frame bursts with our existing cameras.

And my guess is that Dragon is FF 5K same or close pixel count (17MP) but much larger pixel size = more DR

5K is plenty enough resolution, and already the sensor size is at the limit of coverage for many lenses (not past the limit, but right at the edge). More resolution at some point becomes silly, and will make post and archival nightmare situations. Please, no 6K - few real working producers want it, and we certainly don't. I just want better DR, color, less noise, etc (there is no end to how good those things can be, and still be meaningful and useful to creating good shots. Those things are an infinite pursuit of useful better/more). I want ISO 400 000 noise-free that doesn't clip until 40 stops over (but I'll take a perfectly clean ISO 3 000 for now and still be very excited :-) )

You think the RED Dragon is coming out for NAB?

personally i dont think itll be out yet, but i remember jim saying a while back in one of his posts that he was looking at something that was conceived on mars and he couldnt believe it or something to that effect. So who knows, they may have a prototype there of some sort. Either way id love to be there to see in person

After what i have read here and there i have come to the conclusion that Jim & KETCH ROSSI are up to something big... Whats left after a Hollywood studio - cinema camera - player and projector ? the whole dam planet thats what :)

I don't see them lowering prices any time soon. I think Scarlet (accessories included) is a steal compared to anything else on the market.

I don't see them ever lowering prices. But I do see them doing something like they did with the Red Drive where they doubled the capacity for the same price. The only pathway I see to lowering camera price would be through the introduction of an entirely new model. Epic and Scarlet would remain, but another niche would be served if a new model that reflects the company's new lower cost of production structure were introduced, should that happen. But even that (both lower cost of production and new camera model) is unlikely, at least for a few years.
