Owning and Epic instead of Scarlet or R1 will not change your career at all, nor your life. ...
Milan, owner ops worth for their skills, never for the capture device they have. It is your showreel to make the core of the price. I can understand this can have some weight on the daily rate for the combo, but you won't lose a gig 'cause the rental rate is lower now. And if you add more useful stuff to your offer, you can even beat your competitors. The important is that your acquisition gear is the state of the art, this is what matters in the end. I guess the main focus of Jim/Jarred, all the time, to offer it to their clientele. For the best bang for the buck. The only way to succeed in a severe competitive industry.I would like to post my opinions on this matter and they are that... my opinions. I will say that I have always considered myself as an advanced user when it came to electronics and photographic equipment however I did not have a formal training in film or photography (honestly I didn't feel like I needed to waste money on formal training). I would like to applaud ANY potential price reduction on Scarlet and/or EPIC prices. I recently purchased a Scarlet camera in July of 2012 and I do not feel raw at all about any potential price reduction enacted by RED. It is NOT their responsibility to protect me in pricing. The last professional camera I owned was a Canon XL1S which I purchased probably in 2001 or 2002 if my memory serves right. I only have not upgraded since then because I expected technology would get better and I never found tech to be good enough since then and now. I feel RED only has a responsibility to continue cranking out the latest and greatest. It is obvious they are developing the Dragon and how do you expect them to adjust to announcements from competitors promoting new products. They ultimately have to drop prices. This is a great thing. I would not complain that they are dropping prices. That makes it that much quicker that I can upgrade to Epic. And who knows I may purchase more than one considering the new prices. It took me over 10 years to finally make a jump into purchasing a new professional camera system (solely because it was the only camera that I saw fit that met my needs and in my price category). I feel like others that have stated that this is simply moore's law. Things are moving very quickly now. But the fact is that I need a camera NOW. Not a year ago and not a year from now. Prices will come down now and while Rob made a decision to buy back then, I have no sympathy for him. I have to look out for myself just as RED has to look out for themselves. And as much as anyone thinks it is in RED's best interest to artificially drop prices (by not dropping them where they are a game changer, as Rob would suggest, I do not believe that) So Rob, do us a favor and stop trying to speak for the multitudes of silent RED purchasers which are upset by potential price decreases. I have been a silent RED purchaser as well and I did by recently and I am not upset by this potential price decrease. And I will not be within the 30 day window to which I would get a accessories credit and I still want prices to go down. Because I did not foolishly make a bad "Investment". The last time I checked RED was a consumer products company and a private company at that. They have no responsibility to Public "investors". I don't consider my purchase an investment. I consider it a gateway to making my dream a reality. And you know what. If I was solely in the rental game and bought to rent out this camera I would not blame or ask RED "to be reasonable" in reducing prices. I am not on their board of directors. You should have done your own research on investing in tech. It is not their responsibility in protecting you. They have a responsibility to making sure the product performs under warranty. Sorry but I am just sick of 91 pages of garbage in which you sound like you are looking out for all of us. Remove me from your "others who are silent". I do not agree with your opinions. And I have owned multiple businesses myself and have developed multiple business plans myself. Just so you know.
You don't seem to have an even basic understanding of the business we are in. Nobody made an "investment in tech". We are professionals and cameras are the tools we use, not the "investment" that we just sit on our ass and wait to get return on. Some here are solely in the rentals business and that's different.

While there are other camera manufacturers to hate RED, we 95% of clients can feel safe with the future of this company.Well, this is just another reason an investment in a camera body is a bad idea. The rest of the camera companies hate RED for their tactics, and soon many of their own customers may as well. It is true that RED is not doing this for us, even though they are spinning it that way, they are doing it for one thing only...
...
But it has changed my life in many ways.
...
I now work in contexts I enjoy, as opposed to making more money, but feeling like I only pressed out crap at an increasing pace.
...
But as to quality of life and meeting interesting challenges and people and productions and situations, and my own development:
Totally invaluable.
...
With my business model, it will take me years to recoup my camera investments.
Don't get me wrong...I try to get decent rates for my equipment, but I also have to understand my clients...mostly Non-Profit organizations.
So..do i say "Well Non-Profit Company X, seeing that you have a limited budget, I am going to shoot your video with the crappiest piece of camera we own"?
My father taught me to always wear a suit to a meeting...not only will you look good, but it will make you feel good too. Point being, everything I do is an extension of myself...I always want my work to reflect my best...hence, I will whip out my RED any day on any project.
Sometimes the math doesn't add up (it drives our accountant mad!)...maybe that's why I'm not financially well off. Yet I do get immense satisfaction every time we show final product...knowing that I've always chosen the best tool to get the job done.
If prices go down...oh well...good for the next generation of filmmakers. I learned this lesson years ago when I invested almost 100K on a MEDIA 100 only to see Final Cut obliterate its value.....
LOL Priceless. I know your work. I am even used to link to others your " (The More) Perfect Yellow* " (and it is becoming viral), I'm sorry to tell you but you are only an artist ;-)
BTW part2, you should correct the aspect ratio on vimeo. The piece doesn't deserve it...
Hope the announcement is up soon. Hopefully it means we can buy some of the fantastic red lenses
Time to bring out the champagne...
