  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

ESPN 4K

lets hope it does better than Espin 3d
 
I would love to see some hockey in 4K. Lets go flyers...

Several broadcasters are gun-shy based on 4K based on what happened with 3D.

3D and 4K are VERY different animals.

Having done quite a bit of it, I really like what is creatively possible with native 3D - however - 98% of the industry embraced it as a gimmick to make more money with little to no intelligent regard and understanding for the format. And of course, there are plenty of other dynamics that really hurt 3D's potential - such as active glasses and poor projection re: brightness/lumens.

4K is a different animal. It's not a different "format". It is MORE IMAGE FIDELITY. SD > HD. Retina display, etc. Do we need it? It's not about "need" - it's about ... "can we have it?".

Everyone wants image and audio to go to .... 11.

And how are they planning to broadcast 4K? Is there a standard for that? Like 19.2 mb /s MPEG2 for 1080?
Are the broadcast transmitters setup for that? Do they have the hardware and software? Is it FCC approved band width? I never heard anything about that. Maybe I missed it ....
Or it's just the upconversion gimmick....

The channel is not live yet. There is no real stardard right now. 4K can be done inside current bandwidth.
 
Ofcourse it can. But not in Mpeg2. New hardware in needed for that. 3D is possible to implement with existing hardware...

Not with any currently approved or supported codec. And therefore not with any currently available hardware, at least not without external add on boxes.

My guess is that if ESPN is actually serious about trying to deploy this in the near term, they'll try to deliver it in a similar way to ESPN3, which is delivered only via broadband, not via cable or broadcast.

Well, there's a good solution. Completely destroy the entire digital broadcast infrastructure in one fell swoop. End all broadcasting and all the equipment that everyone currently has because you don't happen to think the standard is good enough. Yeah, great idea.
 
BROADBAND is the solution while everyone else just drags along.

"Bet the wrong horse?" What in the world are you talking about? I don't have any personal investment in any production equipment at all. And I don't have a "horse" in any race. I've been in the service end of the business for a very long time, and as such, I've always provided whatever clients want, and will continue to do so, regardless of formats, broadcast standards, or anything else. And regardless of my own feelings on the merits or lack of them of all of those things. I'm just pointing out that you made a remark that to me was a bit ridiculous, even if it was just intended to be a bit flippant.

Well ... I do not believe for one second - that the majority of content consumed in peoples homes in the US in 2-3 years will be MPEG2. And for good reason.
 
Either way any one puts it, Sports drive the TV business as Racing drives the Car industry, and this is an event I look forward to it, as I have seen enough 4K to absolutely crave it vs. HD.

And I also truly believe for what IU have been seen and hearing that the move to 4k, will be fast and swift, and by absolutely no comparison anything like it has been for 3D, which as I said in an other thread, it was crippled before it had a chance, by greedy Cinema owners, and Studios alike, without going to any details here, as there is absolute no need to derail this thread.

But point is, that 4k is no longer the future but the present, only a matter of getting both enough content and systems to support it, both of which are forthcoming as fast as a bullet train.
 
Since the 4K is the present- where can I see 4K in Los Angeles today?
