  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC-X UPDATE

@ Tim
What do you mean saying "stage 2 people took a risk"??
Are you serious about that? So you don't trust RED?

Many people like me is waiting for an update about stage 3, so we asked, and we would like to have an answer from RED, not for you...Then, if RED thinks that now is not the time for this info, is fine, no problem with that... We will wait until an official announcement.

Jean Pierre, the way I interpret the OP of this thread ... the current thinking, (subject to change and universal chaos), is that you can get Stage 3 in October.

So... Having read through all this great news, here's a couple of questions from me:

• If I want to go small with an EVF, is there an option to split the signal out of the current LCD/EVF tap, or will we have to go small HD or similar?

• If we go Small HD + EVF, will the use of HDMI kill off the SDI tap like it does on R1?

• When do you expect to enable different LUTs on the different taps?

Cheers, and thanks for the most entertaining cam I ever tried!

whoa... aint no tone but love in my posts. go back and read Jarred and Jim's post. I aint speaking for them. just reminding people of what he said.

Dont bit the hand that feeds you Stage 3 is all Im saying... maybe RED will give you a $10,000 in store shopping spree. Who knows.

I just dont understand that if he

1. Didnt mention it in POST 1
2. Didnt acknowledge it again after requests.
3. Made statements that Stage 3 ls after 2

that maybe people should get the "hint" - that they are not ready to address Stage 3 - since Stage 2 is still a moving target.

Everything else read into my TONE is funny. I have no evil tone.. just a "whoa, dont bug RED so much tone"

they tend to be more generous with positive reinforcement... gee, I guess Im like that too

Good to hear! I'm sure it's frustrating having the limiting factor be something out of your control. So would it be reasonable to assume Epic-S would be available before the end of the year? Even to non-current Red owners?

you guys are all nuts :)

Expect similar changes to Stage 3.. but the Stage 2 Package was always superior to the Stage 3 package... expect that to be the same.

Stage 3 reservations will not commence, in any form, until Stage 2 starts shipping.

And btw.. we love Stage 3 guys just as much as Stage 2 guys. Seems to be a little cultural divide happening between the two, which you guys gotta realize how bizarro that is.

I know its been along time.. but everyone needs to step back and remember that these stages are a gift to you guys.... that seems to have been lost along the way.

Is the old EVF compatible with the Epic-X ?

It wasn't when I tested it a few weeks ago (the camera was an EPIC-M of course, although it was marked 'EPIC-X', interestingly!) but I'm sure it's just a few firmware updates away; a matter of implementing the slightly different resolution.

Probably hasn't been a priority before now as all the early EPIC adopters have been taking Bomb EVFs or just using the LCD AFAIK. That will change big-time with Stages 2 & 3 as a lot of these people will be using EPIC bodies with their existing RED ONE accessories, including EVFs, so it pretty much has to be implemented by then. 'Obsolescence obsoleted' remember :-)

Well said Jarred, most especially that last sentence! I think some people needed that reminder... and thanks for the clarification on reservations, now I can relax and not worry about writing checks until I see Stage 2 unboxing pics :-)

IIRC, the only difference between 2 & 3 was that 3 was slated to come with the 2.8" LCD (instead of the 5" for S2) which has of course been canned...?

I don't have any feelings of this cultural divide at all, although I do sense some of what you refer to coming from others. Maybe, maybe, it's down to the long period many Stage 2 folks have had deposits on with RED... I sometimes think I get a vibe of 'we paid our deposits ages ago, we've been waiting a LONG time, and yeah it means we're at the front of the line, but that doesn't mean much because the folks who can afford M have got their cameras already, and the Stage 3 guys will get their cameras right after we get ours'.

At least that the vibe I sometimes sense, and how I read the runes. Caveat: this analysis is worth what you paid for it, and if I was any good at it I'd be in a different career! :-)

"C'est la passion" for Red :)
We don't forget the "never seen before" deal tu us!... It's just crazy!!

It was just the tone of a previous post... Kind of "don't even ask"... "We are not in the same world"... Whatever...
Not very interesting...

The good news is!!! Very intersting!!
So let's be happy!

Ain't that just the truth mate!! :)

No cultural divide here - really looking forward to our Stage 3 Epic, but no loss of love for the Stage 2 crew!...

By the way, I think the changes you're making to the package make perfect sense - particularly dropping the Base I/O module and switching to SSD instead of CF as standard. Probably doesn't make much odds financially to us (we'd have gone for the SSD upgrade and the Pro I/O upgrade, which I'd guess will come out nickels and dimes difference to the new package plus a Pro I/O), but for those folks who don't want or need an I/O module it'll work much out much cheaper. I can't believe anyone would not have upgraded the Base I/O in any case, so the I/O folks come out about even = good decision!

Nice work guys,
Dom.

Think for a moment. What would you do as a Red 1 owner if there was no stage 2 or stage 3 preferred treatment and you all had to get in line with everyone else on day 1 when the new cameras are released at full price?
Would you then be complaining that a limited edition but incomplete hand built model was introduced at a premium until parts availability and cost issues could be resolved for the volume production lower cost versions? Or would you make the best economical choice for your own situation and either pay the premium or wait?

Considering that Stage 2 and 3 folks will eventually get an Epic-X package for little more than the price of a practical Sony F3 package, I don't see any grounds for complaint.
