Jim,

Any ROUGH time table of delivery, brother (you told me to call you so last time I chatted with you at RED studio)? If I used my #900s Red One to trade in with stage 2 (almost as soon as I was notified), when should I expect to hear from a Bomb Squad?

Please pardon me if such a mundane question drives you nuts. In fact, this is my first post of similar question since I signed up to purchase Red cameras many moons ago. I have been patient and courteous.

Really love the new design of the vents. Would it be weird to say that I'm so proud of you guys?
You guys have definitely done some amazing things. I'm so excited for the epic's.

Sidenote: There are those pins again!

No joke, We set it down inside the Pelican case. No blunt force or anything and it snapped. I hadn't even powered it up.
Glad to see a new design has been implemented.

Nope, it was fresh out of the box. Not even powered up.

If anything is to brake, this is the best choice, relatively inexpensive part that, is easily replaced. I removed mine to attach the VF FMJ top plate, the grill is not aluminum, it's nylon or plastic.

I agree. Plus, something tells me they were aware of this potential problem. You can tell by looking at it that the new design is stronger.

Sidenote: There are those pins again!

My guess is that those pins may be for future flash systems. I think I remember in the early Epic specs that the Epic would allow for some kind of flash syncing, but that was a long time ago. If Epic wants to be a true photo/moving image camera it should have some kind of flash system. Also the placing is pretty much where is should be.

But all of this is pure speculation.

Is the new top mount re-enforced with a stronger design?

And you paid how much for that?

I'm not questioning the Quality RED's products or how you handle your gear, but wow that's ahh... interesting...

Are those metal or plastic?

Maybe the heat coming out of there had something to do with it.

Leo, I heard that Alonzo dropped the Epic on Day #1 which cracked the vent. Maybe he did this prior to you seeing it? I don't know? Either way it's unfortunate for sure...

it's thermal plastic.. it is a heat vent, trust me you don't want that to be metal.

Before you jump to conclusions... consider how many times you have seen this happen.

Regardless.... I will send the foam fairies that make the foam a note that somehow their diamond hard foam is breaking things.

Just to be clear, Jarred. Can I or can't I make toast on an Epic?

Now that I think about it, didn't I see a picture a while back with a fan mounted on the top of the camera in a 3D rig or something...hmm...I'm guessing those two extra mounting points also play a role.

Aye. Would be handy if there were some power connectors in there to operate the fan, plus maybe a hookup to temperature sensors to tell it how fast it needs to run...

Yes. You're right about the suspect. But he did not drop it.
He set it down into the Pelican case.
I watched him set it down. It could have happened to anyone.
Looks like a very easily interchangeable part that can be ordered.

Plus there is a top mount on its way.

In anticipation of our "soon to be shipped" cameras, it's great to reflect upon what it's taken for RED to get through the R&D process and to defeat all odds when it came to engineering such a camera.

Fun Fact (One of many): The 3.9lb RED EPIC can process up to 1,579,008,000 RAW pixels every second.

The 13.8lb Arri Alexa tops at 124,416,000 "ProRes" pixels. I'm told that with another $50,000 box (give or take a few), you can record up to 186,624,000 RAW pixels every second.

This means that the EPIC records 12.69 times the data an out-of-box Alexa shoots. Still, 8.46 times the data with another $50,000+ to help the Alexa.


Kudos to RED for the patience to go "all out" for these technical advances...in spite of what very well could have been popular opinion to just ship it AS IS back in December '10.

Add an additional 5.7lb for the 50k recorder

On-board lossless or compressed RAW recording is the only way to with.

Now back to the topic.

I can't wait to get an EPIC-X with that super fancy case!
