  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC-X at IBC...

It has EVF/LCD output plus CF recording via the side CF module, HD-SDI out, HDMI out, 2 channels of Balanced Mic Audio in + 48v Phantom power, Headphone out, Power in, RS-242, Genlock/GPIO, all on the Brain itself.

If you need more I/O or full sized ports, you of course go out to the modules.

Do you get the same I/O on the scarlet brain?

Also any chance of seeing a scarlet brain in the line up too? :p

Love the dual "caution-hot" insignias on top of the Epic-X. Has more than one meaning to me. This cam is friggin smokin :sifone:

I only wish my Italiano was as good as your English.
The reason that objects have so much spent on them in terms of aesthetics is marketing, of which 'branding' is critical. However, to me there is nothing more beautiful than design with out superfluity.
I love Ferraris and will drive them every chance I get. The fact that I also admire the design of Pininfarina is incidental. I've owned ugly cameras in the past, Hassleblad, Sinar and the Canon XL1 too. but as long as the functionality is there, give me Haute Industrial Chic any day. I hate the petrol they use but both Hummer and Lamborghini make excellent looking SUV's. RED is the Hummer of the Video World. No insult intended.

I don't know about other countries, but here in Italy we've an old saying: "Anche l'occhio vuole la sua parte" (literally "even the eye wants its share") - meaning that is normal to look for something that is also visually appealing.

Sure, efficiency (or what we perceive as satisfacting performances) come first: I myself I've been a long-time user (among the others) of the Canon XL-series even though when I first saw the XL-1S (just as when I firstly saw the RedOne body), I thought it looked weird at best.

That said, if I have to spend some tens of thousands (either dollars or euros), I'd prefer to buy something that has also been well-designed, rather than a piece of equipment that looks like a plumber's nightmare.
After all, if all the major manufacturers (and we're not just talking about cameras: how about computers, cars, phones and all the others?) are spending a lot of money on designs (hell, even the guys at Cray Inc. - one of the leader manufacturers of supercomputers - have a team of designers), there must be a reason.

Yeah definitely puts things in perspective.

Just so you know.. the Epic setup in the photo has everything you need to shoot minus the power ( just like the RED ONE ) so its almost an apples to apples comparison..

This looks very good, Jarred. Kind of glad you are not getting much sleep.

One question: Do I need I/O module to connect Red Drive (or any other external media), or can I connect it straight to the "minimum" setup?

Here is a top down view of Epic vs. R1 to answer some of your sizing questions.. on the Epic there is a Redmote attached that obviously can be removed.

I'm sure you guys have tested it... but the CF module and what I assume to be the EVF port seem to be right where an operator's face might want to be. I assume that in person it's not as intrusive as it looks here?

[edit: nevermind, a Photoshop overlay eased my concerns]

That's pretty freakin' awesome, by the way. The size is fantastic. Any word on SD output or the ability to maintain timecode [without drifting and, hopefully, across power cycles]?

Can't wait.

ok, you've blown my mind here - the superlatives escape me...

one question - i know there are folks who will think this is a stoopid question, but it is about maximizing the flexibility of the smallest possible configuration - and building it super light for long-distance traveling, the aforementioned "backpack of fun"...

with something this compact, will there be a shoe mount of some sort - if i can hook up a wireless receiver directly to this thing (without gaff tape-ing the heck out of it...) and run audio into the camera, i would be ecstatic.

i wouldn't even need a SCARLET, i'd just trade up to two of these and keep one super light and ready for action and pack the other one with all the goodies...

outstanding achievement, truly outstanding.

Yes you need a Drive Port module for the RED DRIVE.. but its a skinny one.

Same balanced +48V mic inputs and HDMI output on Scarlet S35 and Scarlet 2/3 Cinema (non fixed zoom) body?

That tiny little box does 125fps @ 4K :001_wub:

Dont worry Meryem :)

y'all have done everything so right, so far, that i worry very little!

audio has been such a weak hack on the hybrid dslr set-ups, to date--it will be great to see the DSMC sporting the complete no-compromises super mobile package...

i haven't been this excited about a camera since, er, RED ONE...
