This is the most bizzare issue I've seen.
I sent a support ticket to RED, but in the meantime I wanted to know if anyone ever faced this issue and what was the outcome.

I have had the latest Beta firmware on my Epic, since it came out. No issues. Today I was prepping this camera and my Scarlet. Manually input the same settings on both and did a black shade at temperature. After that the Epic won't power down. Get's hung up on the red "powering down" screen. I can keep pressing the power button or pull the battery and the camera will obviously lose power. When powered up again it won't give me the "improper shutdown" screen, and everything seems to be working. Seems to be recording without any issues.
After that I tried to downgrade the firmware to the latest non Beta version. I insert the SSD with the "force upgrade" file. The camera gets powered up, fan goes on max, and screen is black. It hangs there. After a long while, I pressed the power button until it went off. Removed the SSD and powered on again. The camera powers up fine, and firmware is changed, but the "force upgrade file" on the SSD is still there, did not get removed. Deleted this file and re-inserted the SSD in the camera. Recorded a little and works fine. Tried to save a log. The camera hangs up on the "saving log file" screen. Have to force shut down. The file does not get saved, but the camera powers on again and seems to work fine. It seems to hang on any process it needs to do...

Any thoughts?

I'm sure RED support will get back to you, but it sounds like some sort of SSD problem. On shutdown, the camera will save a log file -i f it is hanging during this, it won't be able to shutdown properly.

Have you tried with more than one SSD?
Have you tried re-formatting the SSD first?
Have you tried a secure erase of the SSD?

That's why I love this forum, someone will come in and have an idea you hadn't thought off.
I didn't think of this angle. Unfortunately I just tried with several SSD's and it hangs with any, also without any. I tried those SSD's on my Scarlet and that turns off with no issues...

Might as well try to module as well.. Put the Epic Side SSD module on the Scarlet and see if it has a problem. Or take the Scarlet Side SSD and put it on the Epic and see if it turns off.

Did you change any settings on the Epic after re-installing firmware?

I remember last year having an issue (unrelated as it was camera loosing some functionality like temperature reading and sometime fan will keep running full speed during record). After much experimentation (was shooting in India at the time) I discovered it only happened after I enabled SDI out at 50hz, any other value worked well and I think RED then fixed the software problem.

It might be you've run into a rare bug. If you haven't tried yet to shutdown / write log after a clean install then progressively re-enable your settings one by one it might be worth testing.... While waiting for RED support to follow up on your ticket.

Daniel ,Try hard reset push botton power for 30 second, and reinstall firmware.

Just a shot in the dark... did you reformat the SSD after doing the black shade?

Not imediately after, but at request of support I did a secure format and tried to save a log again, but nothing changed...

So for those interested in the outcome. My camera went back to RED and they turned it around pretty quickly. It did have a board malfunctioning that was replaced under warranty, and they are overnighting the camera back to me. Solved...
