  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic-W Wifi Dropping out

Thibaut,

Thankyou for creating a video!

I think you are the first person (other than myself) that has captured the problem on video.
(I can reproduce the same problem with RCPDemo in 3 minutes)

The problem that 00:38 seconds into your video, that when you are
making changes wirelessly, the Red Brain Firmware TEMPORARILY DISCONNECTS itself from its
Self created (ad hoc) network.

+) Can you extract the logs for Red to investigate + share this video with them.

Questions for Red might include
1) Why did the WIFI temporarily disconnect 38 seconds into this video?
2) Am I the only person that is reporting this issue - or are there others?
3) Is this problem fixable in firmware - and if so, what sort of timeframe?

Others reading this that have Also noticed their Adhoc network going briefly Yellow,
and / or the need to REBOOT the camera to RESET the WIFI, it is in our
interests to provide RED with a step-by-step process for them to reproduce this! :-)

Thanks,
AJ

Also in this video toward the end you change the network settings to infrastructure but upon relaunching foolcontrol it still has the camera discovered previously listed and cannot reconnect to it aince it is no longer reachable. It needs a manual rescan of the network to find the new camera. I will add a network check that will auto rescan when needed to avoid this ... i do not not rescan automatically on each launch to shorten the re-connection time but in that case I understand it needs a bit of extra code to be smarter...

Regarding the ad hoc dropout I do not know what is causing it.... is it always happening after a 1:1 punch in ?

Thank you AJ, I'll send it to my BS rep right away!

Thanks Mikael,

The connection drops 90% of the time after pressing 1:1.
When I'm in 1:1 mode (zoomed in) the focus doesn't react at all.

I've had a similar issue with my Scarlet W. Lucky to get a few minutes use before the network dropped in ad-hoc or infrastructure mode. I was then unable to reset the wifi to gain a new connection and the camera would hang on the shutdown screen. A shutdown being the only way to get the wifi back.

RED couldn't see any issue in the logs so I've taken the opportunity of a quiet couple of weeks to drop it with RED Europe. I'd recommend you do the same as I've seen a few people with the same issue and it does appear to be hardware related.

I have captured the issue, the app lost connection after only 6 seconds here but sometimes I would get a few minutes.

How long did it take to get your Scarlet back? We have a few busy weeks ahead, of course it is always an inconvenience to send a camera back...

I only dropped it off Friday. They said the average was 5 working days. I'm hoping this is the case as things pick up for me again the first week of Feb.

Any news yet, Ross? Thanks!

Not the best news I'm afraid. Red had the camera for 2 weeks and though they couldn't see any obvious issue, they changed out the wi-fi board. Tested it as soon as it arrived home and the problem still happens. Wi-fi disconnects, I can't reset the wi-fi in camera and the it hangs on shutdown. I get 30-45 seconds if I'm lucky. I noticed if I leave the app running and don't send any commands, it doesn't drop.

I was at BSC on Friday and despite the place being flooded with wi-fi interference I was able to control all the demo Reds with basically no drop outs from a fair distance. Looks like I'll have to get it back to Red again.

Ross,

If you are having wifi dropouts on a Camera created (Adhoc) network there are TWO scenarios that can help zero in on the route cause:

1) The cameras transmission of its own networks fails (as can be seen in other people's videos when the wifi symbol in camera briefly turns Yellow during the 'glitch'), or
2) The external device / local intererance is causing a problem.

If you are also getting (1) - I would ask the following questions :
1a) Is there any camera log that shows that the camera self created Wifi failed.
1b) if 1a includes a log : Does the log indicate why the failure occurred?
1c) if 1b does not have the necessary information : are there diagnostics that be enabled in the next beta build that can be enabled in order that this issue can be tracked down?

I just downloaded and paid $149 for the foolcontrol app and it worked a little bit on my red epic w on channel 6 with ad hoc. Then disconnected. tried to rescan and it would not even thought I was still connected by wifi.

Does restarting the camera lets you reconnects normaly ?
Anything special you did before loosing connection ?

I will need to try that. It was late and I just shut it down and went to bed. After I connected and then got disconnected, I rescanned, shut down the app completely and no luck.

Just following up. It looks like everything appears to be working fine now. Love this app!

i'm curious if there's not more technical information about making this work
with my iPad and epic W sitting next to each other on my desk will lose connection and not reconnect unless I restart The camera

Is it ad hoc mode ? did you try several wifi channels ?
Anything particular you do in the app before it disconnects ?

Curtis,

Your symptoms are (IMHO) exactly the same as others in this thread.

If the wifi icon flashes Yellow (or attempts to reinitialise), and subsequently only responds to a reboot,
Please raise a ticket with Red - send them your camera log (which may show what went wrong in the Firmware that caused the brain to disconnect / reset).

Please report back in this thread the cause the Red believe this is caused by.

Regards,
AJ

I'm having same issue on my Epic-w. Connects to ad-hoc for just about a min then disconnects. So we are all leaning towards the idea that it's a red issue. Hate to lose my camera right now for repair.

Got a new Scarlet-W last week and have the same issue. Tried both foolcontrol ios-app on iPad and iPhone as well as the osx-application on two different computers.
Have tried first with ad hoc and experienced a lot of dropouts so I went and bought a new router and did set up a new network only for the scarlet but still experience the same kind of dropouts when I punch in and out of 1:1.
After zooming in/out the timecode in the app freezes and won't update (during this time I can't do anything with the app) and after a few seconds the app goes back to the "start-screen" and then the wifi status on the camera screen goes from green to grey then yellow and back to green again and then it's possible to connect again.

Have been renting a few different dsmc-2 bodies and using the iOS app, and have experienced that some are more stable then others but haven't had time to figure out why since I've only rented during productions..

Have anyone got an answer if it's hardware related or what to do with this problem?

Hello Petter.

I have tried again here on 2 cameras and do not get the 1:1 magnify zoom wifi dropout.
I recommend you open a ticket on red.com support page, describe the issue and send a camera log file so they can look into this.
