  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC STAGE Clarification and update

Im sorry Im really confused, Im saving for a scarlet and was wondering if I could dates when a non red owner can purchase?

I understand that red owners get 'first dibs' but I thought the whole original idea of red was to give extraordinary cameras to a market that previously was unattainable.

Surely some idea of release dates, or at the very least a schedule for the rest of us to start preparing to buy our first red camera should be given. Even a mention would at least of been appreciated.

Hmmm so is there any option for guys like me who are purchasing a red mx within this month ;)

My analysis is that a RED ONE MX in the vast majority of cases can shoot "footage" which is identical to results from the Epic-X. I think a RED ONE with Prime lenses can produce films which can compete with 35mm film. I think a RED ONE MX will be a very, very "competitive" camera for the next five years and perhaps much longer. The only thing lacking is a good Script and good Actors. And you might be able to pick up RED ONE accessories at lower prices. I am going "Epic-X", but as I say, I see no "real" advantage over RED ONE MX, at least for my filmmaking style. Use your RED ONE MX until you have One Million Net profit from filmmaking, then look to see what the options are .....

Mansh,

The Epic has a number of advantages.

1) It's smaller, modular and can weigh much less.
2) HDRx
3) Higher frame rates without cropping and higher still with a crop.
4) Lens mounts that can be easily changed in the field ... and more choices.
5) More Redcode options
6) Improved menus and available touchscreens
7) The Redmote
8) Another thousand pixels of resolution
9) The Epic is better suited for 3D rigs

... and the list goes on.

However ... with that said ... I am hoping and praying that the next 48 hours will bring some sort of financial incentive by Red in Stage 3.5 giving me a good reason to hold on to "Robin Hood", my Red One M-X. With every day, the thought of parting with this camera becomes more difficult to accept.

The Red One M-X is truly an amazing camera, and the addition of an SSD side module would make it perfect as a second camera system. There are many shoots where we need a lightweight camera devoted to a Steadicam and another on a dolly or sticks with a fully built configuration. Saving the transition time would be a God send.

Do we have any hint as to when Stage 3 is going to open?

We've been exchanging emails with a Jason Dubb @RED and he insists that all Epic Stages are closed and that if we haven't placed a deposit yet, we're out of it.

Since we haven't been informed of the start of Stage 3 reservations (and I can't find anything about it here), I understand that what he means is that Stage 2 reservations are closed and Stage 3 ones haven't started yet.

Can anyone confirm?

That was my understanding too. There was never an offer to be part of stage 3. So i think he means Stage 2

Stage 3 will open after Stage 2 is complete and all Stage 2 Epic's have been delivered.

now all we need to know is when stage 2 starts...ehehehehehe

I think Stage 3 is going to take WAY longer than Stage 2 to deliver in full. The logistics of the camera trade-ins, shipping, etc will be a nightmare... Still an awesome deal though!

I was thinking the same thing. I will happily hand deliver my camera to Red if it helps make the process easier.

Speaking of waiting, how about sweetening the original deal since many of us are pushing the two year mark for waiting for our Epic(s). A couple of extra SSD cards and/or batteries would be a good step. Red has our scratch, we have promises. What if the prices we're all waiting for to come down so that Red can make its profit margin don't come down?

I think everyone is empathetic to Red's situation, even me. But there has to be a drop dead date or some quid pro quo from Red for us slobs who can't afford M's. As I suggested previously, give people in line who have Stage 1 or 2 position the option of paying a bit more for their Epic now and maybe toss in a sweetener in the process. The way Red has it set up now, they call the shots. They have my money (our money). They choose to make M's because the profit margin is greater while being quiet as to when we can expect our cameras. What's fair? Another two year wait? Six months more? Red's position that if you don't like it they'll refund your deposit is arrogant in my humble view.

Historically, when someone complains about the wait, many of you jump to Red's defence saying how much money they're loosing, poor Jannard, poor Red Studios, poor private jet, poor private motor coach, etc. When will you guys starting thinking about the ticket holders that have been left empty handed for far far too long?
