  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC stage 3...list

What kinds of problems showed up? What was the total repair bill?

Well the funny thing was that the actual cost for repairment wasnt high at all. (A smashed /I-pin contact that must have happened during the very fist month I got my Red One. But since the /i-data never happened in metadata, I never bothered to get it repaired). It was only 70$.. Then some other repair (cable assembly/blower/internal) $30 extra...

What I didn't calculate for was the service labor (540$), the Red One Duties and Taxes (It seems we have to pay the duties for what we sent back to Red? I dunno, anyway it was another $420) but the most interesting part is that when I calculate the cost for the Epic-X package. Its not $28,000 as stated but somwhat around $29,610.. I dont know if there is some duties in there, because its not stated in the Invoice. But in the end except for the actual repair parts, it was a extra cost of about $2570..... I didn't really calculate that it was going to reach that high, but it did.. And Im just lucky I didn't have a faulty HDMI port or a flaky audioport. Then it would get really costly.. So for people in Europe. Even if you dont have any repairs needed to be done. Prepare for around $2500 extra (The duty on the MX is around $120 more than the M Red one btw..)...

Thats a scary thought. They have mine so will hopefully get my eval in a few days from now. It works fine, no problems at all so :-S

Hi Peter, it sounds not nice to read in your message about HDMI port and audioport. We have lost our HDMi a year ago and I am not sure about one audio port as well. How much it can cost extra for me? Thanks.

Sorry Paulios.. I have no idea what that might cost you. But I've heard that replacing boards can be pretty expensive, so I hope in your case its only the connector.

Can someone clear up the point raised about duties & taxes. I understood that as I purchased my camera from RED in the US that the reason I have to return it there and not Red Europe is so there are no taxes to pay, i.e as the camera was exported from the US then as the original owner, if it is returned to the US there are no duties to pay. If de facto there is a charge then this is something we should really be aware of. Also can anyone clarify if the service labor is a fee to evaluate the camera?

Why would there be additional taxes & duties to be paid if a camera which originated in the US (like mine) is returned to the US, either directly or via UK? Doesn't sound right to me... and don't get me started on Stage 4 buyers starting to receive their Epics now, months before my Stage 3.5 arrives. It's been severely pissing me off for a while now.

As Stage 4 buyers already getting their Epics now, I hope to get an email very soon for our Stage 3 Red One. We are ready to ship R1 back to the mothership...

RED is actually buying the camera back from you. So US taxes & duties have to be paid. And you cannot expect that RED will pay them for you. Seems pretty reasonable to me...

This is not how it was explained to me. I purchased the camera from RED and paid taxes & duties that were applilcable for export from the US/import into the EU. I was also told by Alan Piper that if a camera was bought from RED in the US, NOT Red Europe, then the camera has to be returned to the US becasue of the import/export issues, i.e as I am the original owner and I imported the camera to the EU then the reason that I had to ship it back to the US was to avoid RED being liable for tax & import duty. I think this needs clarification from RED unless anyone from the EU has shipped back their camera and not been liable for any costs other than shipping - is there anyone out there that has experienced this?

I have sseen post 482 but this is not in accordance with what RED Europe have previously explained

I actually think the whole deal is very reasonable but I always thought the purchaser paid the tax and duties and not the vendor hence the reason I paid the VAT & Customs when we purchased our RED One from RED US. If RED is buying the RED Ones back, then we become the vendor. Or am I getting confused?

But that's not how it was originally explained to me when I had to choose RED US or RED UK for Stage 3.5 trade-in.

In short, I was told that if I choose RED UK I'd pay the trade-in ($17,500) and EU import duty on EPIC-X's full price of $27,500 only. A bit later I was told the trade-in sum is dependent on the credit I receive for the R1 (i.e. after possible repair costs). No mention of evaluation fees or additional taxes & duties on the R1.

I no longer get the point of Stage 3.5. Had I sold my R1 to someone last Autumn, I would have saved the cost of shipping, the evaluation fee and the cost of possible repairs (not to mention the taxes & duties on R1, if applicable!).

By sticking to Stage 3.5 I'm paying more and waiting longer for the camera than people in Stage 4. So what's the point?

The taxes issue is a complicated one, im hoping its not gonna be too much otherwise i wont be able to afford the Epic stage 3 as it will push me over my budget for the moment. I get my eval results this week hopefully i can post when i know how it all works.

My Stage 3 EPIC-X #1721 arrived today (in exchange for RED ONE #369).
But it's more or less a paperweight until I get my Touch LCD, REDMOTE or Side Handle. The next shipment is already announced though. I expect it to be the touch LCD.

EU based Stage 3 and Stage 3.5 RED Ones will be directed to RED Europe when their turn in the line arrives.
We will do the evaluation in the UK and handle all onward shipping which will be managed in the final invoice for the EPIC-X - all duties and US shipping included.
Your EPIC-X will be supplied from RED Europe and invoiced in GBP
You will only need to get the camera to us and pay for shipping of your EPIC-X from London to you.

Hope this helps you guys..

Alan.

i reiterate... this is Alan's post from JAN 29th.

Did you have to pay anything other than shipping? I am assuming only the UK/EU guys are paying a duty on their rigs?

RED 1390 Evaluation complete Feb. 7. No repairs needed.

I received my first Epic some time ago.
I also sent in my second Red One today.
4 items were backordered however so the Epic is just a nice looking paperweight.
(No way to access any menus in addition HDMI, Gigabit port, and SDI ports are all turned off by default.)
