  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic / Scarlet Firmware 3.3.12

You can leave it on. A little something new I've discovered is the ability to upgrade the Redmote from the camera after upgrade. Haven't done this before and I'm giving it a go right now. Definitely takes longer than hooking directly to the computer, but it's simpler. You have to remove the Redmote as usual for the camera upgrade, but when restarting it, if you've reattached the Redmote, the camera will ask if you want to upgrade it from the camera. That's a welcome relief and hopefully in the future won't take up to 30 minutes.

Did it work this way to upgrade the redmote? How much time took it?
best

I opted to add the "on camera" upgrade method for upgrading the Redmote from the camera in recent builds for a couple reasons.. and unfortunately it likely will always take a long time. ( The REDLINK is a slow bus, built for small packets going far with very with little latency)

There were just many times I hated doing upgrades separate.. away from the computer on location, at home, or somewhere outside my office , needing to find a computer or laptop, find the cable, remember where i just put the software, etc. etc. and go through the extra motions while being away from camera. Some times for me to get my shit together and get all that done I could of just done it the slow way on camera with alot less drama.

Sure.. i guess you could call it laziness. and it takes a bit of patience.. but i just like doing it that way better. Its not for everyone.. which is why you can do it both ways :)

Nice! I always seem to misplace that usb cord

Jarred, Is the Redmote firmware contained in the 3.3.12 camera firmware package? Do I need to upgrade Redmote if I upgraded for firmware version 3.3.3?

Yes, worked like a charm. No, it did not take 30 minutes. I didn't time it, but it was somewhere between 15 and 20 minutes I would estimate.

Elsie, don't need the separate Redmote update as it's contained within the 3.3.12 upgrade, one less thing to need.

Thanks Jarred for this option, because it IS simpler. And, it's good to know that if I'm in a hurry, I can always opt to do it the computer/usb method. But I think this is new way for me. Less hassle.

A few notes about upgrading the REDmote via camera:
- Your REDmote will first need to be upgraded via USB to atleast version 4.0.x
- Currently you are only prompted to upgrade if your REDmote is incompatible with the camera - not for every bug fix. We will likely add an option to force upgrade the REDmote to the latest bug fix release through the menus.

The REDmote firmware is contained within the camera upgrade package and will remain on the camera (so that you'll always be able to upgrade a REDmote to a compatible version). As long as your REDmote is version 4.0.x or greater you'll be able to upgrade it via camera.

BTW, I have timed it -many times- and it is very close to 30 minutes. I suggest not watching the progress bar and go get a coffee instead.

Great! Any chance we will see a prerecord option with Epic soon? I realy need this for wildlife...

30 mins is slow ! Who said the USB plug wasn't the best feature of the RED ONE ? he he he

joking aside, it IS a cool feature to have the camera upgrade the REDmote directly... no chance of making it faster using "docked REDmote" instead of REDLink ?

The 30 mins is docked; you cannot upgrade wirelessly.

Trent. I get asked this in our rentals a lot. Is a "Flop" option to turn the RED touch LCD inverting in the works?

Thanks.

Jarred,

Pretty damn excited about the Nikon mount and support. You know how long I have been anticipating it. Of course my Epic is one of 3 on Arrested Development with Panavision mounts. So I will have to wait a few months. But good on ya for figuring it all out......
