  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC-S...

Definitely. You have to rehearse with the actors and nail down the focus! F/2 is definitely not easy, but sooo beautiful

I watched Crazy Stupid Love this weekend, and it seemed like a LOT of it was shot around there, and they had a lot of exterior steadicam going on with a relatively shallow DOF, too.

They missed focus on a LOT of shots. By just a bit.

But you know what? It didn't matter. Story was there, performance was there, and the in-and-out of focus feel worked for the character of the film, for me.

I agree f2 is gorgeous. Although at times a bit disorienting on a huge screen.

I highly doubt there will be any visual differences between 5:1 and 6:1 when you compare the X and S. Just look at the graph y=√X. The theoretical difference in quality between, say, REDCODE 100:1 and 20:1 are HUGE! But as the graph reaches its limit, 7.5:1, 6:1, 5:1, 4:1, 3:1 and 2.5:1 begin to all look the same.

...

I don't doubt your conclusion that the S will look in most cases as good as the X. But can you please explain why graphing y=√X will help support that belief? What's Y; what's X? Why the √?

I'm sure you know what you're talking about--hey you knew how to embed a "√" into a post, LOL. I just don't understand logic behind using the formula y=√X. Thanks.

So I'm gathering that 6:1 is the best Epic-S will theoretically do?

5K 60fps 6:1 is the latest estimation from Jim, earlier in this thread.

My bet is 5K at 60fps at REDCODE 6:1. But I could be wrong...

Jim

Now, does that mean you might be able to do 5K 24fps 5:1? Or 4K 48fps 5:1? Or 3K 24fps 2.5:1? I don't know.

Gotcha. 5K 60fps 6:1 is just fine with me. Toss in 5K 24fps 5:1 and it'd be perfect!

You know...I haven't seen any compression comparisons. Would someone out there with an Epic mind doing a little test for us comparing 5:1 and 6:1? I have a feeling that 6:1 will be just spiffy.

The curve below is based on Jim's comments about Redcode compression rates. I'm not an expert in math, nor are these based on actual results. But I think it illustrates quite effectively the concept of compression:

The truth is that there is a steep curve of improvement with lower compression starting at 20:1 (acceptable) to about 7:1. After that the curve noses over. While there continues to be improvement to 5:1, it becomes almost impossible to see much of a difference from there to 3:1... just more data to deal with. So when we say 5:1 is the "sweet spot", that is the very best image we can get at the best data rate. Others will argue (successfully) that 7:1 or 8:1 is just perfect. And at a much lower data rate.

Jim

Thanks for that Andrew. :smile5:

It illustrates the concept of "a" compression but not Redcode.
This graph is off for this type of compression and it curves more between 10:1 and 5:1.

Check again the quote you used:

EPIC-S is dependent on a few things...

1. EPIC-X finished and shipping most of the orders.

2. The rework of the camera given less electronics and features.

3. Cost saving advantages from a mature assembly process and efficiency of production techniques.

We expect EPIC-S to be in production in Fall of this year. That presupposes no more supply chain surprises.

Jim

Does anyone know if these stipulations were made before or after the 'Epic-X shipping in quantity by end of August' claim? Since it appears that Epic-X will indeed by shipping by months end, it'd make the predictions in this thread much more accurate, allowing for a better estimation on Epic-S's arrival.

Remember, Fall runs until December 21st.

I believe that, as you insinuate, things have been going rather according to plan lately. This bodes well for those looking to future camera releases.

I've searched for the answer to this question but haven't found it, so apologies if I just missed it. I made a down payment several years ago and was on the waiting list for the original RED when the new programs of Epic/Scarlett were announced. RED One was always a stretch for me financially, so it was a no brainer (pardon the pun) to cancel plans for it and wait for Scarlet S-35. It made so much more sense for me, not least because Scarlet S-35 would ostensibly come off the assembly line with Canon still lens mount capability.

The change to Epic-S obviously makes it a bigger financial investment but one I think I can still swing. However I'm concerned over the impending price hikes on the other Epics that will take effect first of the year. Even though the official price for the Epic-S has not yet been announced (to my knowledge), is there a plan or a way to put a down payment on at least an Epic-S brain before the new year in order to freeze whatever price advantages that might secure?

If you do some more searching you'd find that Jim said that if we pay attention we won't be hurt by it. Now whether that was in regards to the Scarlet Fixed, Interchangeable or Epic S I have no idea. I would just check back here every so often and read as much as you can.

I have been playing around with my flat lens design concept again, and realise the s35 might be a suitable body but is expensive. I appologise if this has been said before, but remember 3k for $3k, what about if we could have had 5k for $5k :) .

Elizabeth, the Epic-S price has already been raised, but an official price has not been declared, to my knowledge. I would expect it to remain around where they stated it would be. Since there hasn't been a final price declared, there is no price to "lock in" before the announced increase.

The accessories are available in the Red store at the original levels, so you can order them at any time before they raise them on the first.

At least, that's how I think it'll work.
