EPIC-S...

Jim, Jarred, anyone else from RED want to comment on my question 3 posts above (#336)?

Hi Elizabeth,
A fellow Reduser, Jeffrey Loewe, although not someone from Red, has already answered you, and mentioned you could find the answer from the Red mouth (or pen or keyboard) on Reduser.
It has been said (or more precisely typed) that it would be possible to place your order before the price hike. For that, you will need to be paying attention, to know when and how that can be done. That's all that's been said so far, as far as I know, but it's already a great deal, in both sense of what that means...

Cheers,
Damien

We are focusing 100% on getting EPIC-X out the door right now.... Let us get through that before we dig into the rest of the roadmap :)

I think you have the right priority there :)

I appreciate it's very difficult for you to even guesstimate things until you actually run the production line for real at full speed, but do you have any sense of when we might, might, expect to see you getting into Stage 3? October? December?

Oh, and your last response before you closed the Canon mount thread made me a VERY happy man; I was worried we might be looking at next year before we saw the Nikon electronic mount. Thanks! :emote_happyhappy:

oops.. didn't mean to close that thread.. opened it back up :)

Hey Jarred, just to clear up some things involving releasing of the Epic S, am I right to say that you will be focused 100% on the Epic X, as previously stated, then move onto the Scarlet Fixed, THEN the Epic S?

Some people seem to believe it's both Epics, then the Scarlets.

EPIC-S is dependent on a few things...

1. EPIC-X finished and shipping most of the orders.

2. The rework of the camera given less electronics and features.

3. Cost saving advantages from a mature assembly process and efficiency of production techniques.

We expect EPIC-S to be in production in Fall of this year. That presupposes no more supply chain surprises.

Jim

Is "Fall of this year" still on track for "in production"? Just curious.

Hopefully the Epic-S will hit the production room sometime in Oct if all the Epic-X will be done by then. Seeing how fast the X are being built I'm left with some hope.

Hi, is it possible to get Red cine x professional software on CD when we order any product because sometimes its problematic to download and sometimes its hard to keep update with the latest version. I mean its your generosity that you are giving this software for free however I don't mind if you charge $10 for a CD to be sent with any product we buy from you.

Hi Dave, RCX changes so fast and there is a full update as often as twice a month. A CD would be outdated before it even reached you. As you said yourself, it's hard to keep up with the latest and a CD would make that even worse.

Also, RCX Pro now has an automatic update feature so it will keep itself up to date from now on.

Hi Jim,
thank you so much for the info. could you help me with this as well- my editing computer is not connected with the internet(because of viruses problems I had, however I have other three computers connected with the internet ) is it possible to update Red cine x professional some other way using USB on other computers or something?

Hi Dave. Makes sense. My guess is that there will always be a downloadable DMG installer of the latest version so your best bet is to make it a habit to check once every month or two and download new versions to your USB. These will be clean installs as opposed to auto updates, so you don't need your editing machine connected. My experience is that all your custom export settings remain through updates so should work well.

You could also keep RCX Pro installed on your internet machine and just launch it once in a while to alert you when new versions are available.

There is a certain amount of "ain't broke don't fix it" so if it's working beautifully you probably don't need to be hyper aware of the latest greatest, though it makes sense to check at least once a month as great features appear without warning sometimes.

If you have tiresome virus problems, switch to Apple and it will save you a world of heartbreak.

Assuming you think our late friend Steve Jobs was the devil, or can't afford Apple gear, here are some other thoughts.

You can download the REDCine software's executable files and copy them to a USB stick if you want. But note that bad software can spread via USB stick, so that doesn't necessarily protect you if you have virus problems on your other computers.

If I were you, I would hook up your editing computer to the Internet, and let RedCine download its automatic updates. Don't use any web browser on that computer after the initial download of REDCine.

Remember that if you want to prevent the spread of viruses to your editing computer, you must turn off all file sharing to and from the editing computer. Once a virus gets on your network it will look for other network shares and so your computer can easily be infected if there is any open network access.

If you want to improve security overall, dump Internet Explorer and use FireFox, Chrome or Safari. I like using Safari because it has a pathetic market share on Windows, and is therefore most likely to be safe from attack.

Or get a Macintosh. The computers are pricey but operating costs are significantly lower :).

Hope that helps.

I'll add that Macs generally have a longer lifespan...or at least "useful" lifespan. 4 year old PCs can barely run a current OS.

Umm... that's completely wrong. I ran Windows XP, when it was the most recent OS, for about 5 years without issue. When will people learn that the hardware in a Mac and the hardware in a "PC" is exactly the same? And technically a Mac is a PC, just with a different operating system.

As a matter of fact, the computer I ran XP (and still run XP on) at one point had no virus software on it for 3 years. When I did finally put virus software on it, and ran a scan.... nothing. No viruses, no spyware, no adware, nothing at all.

Bullshit. Having bought a loaded powerpc tower just a while before the Intel macs got released, i got badly burned. Then investing heavily in FCP after ditching AVID burned me again. I just bought back into Avid again with their crossgrade offer and looking to go back to the PC world now. Yeah, sure, I'll buy an ipad or two for the kids, but that's about it. Maybe I'll even spring for an iphone for the wife if Android starts to falter. But I'm never investing in Apple for pro stuff again. Never. Clearly, this has been a sore point for me.
