  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic-S or RedOne-MX??

@Mark you are saying that the Epic-S at $12k is a better camera than R1MX currently out??

I have not seen the final specs for EPIC S - and $12K is the "estimated" price for the "brain only" - so ... I really can't give you an "real" answer.

If you want me to speculate .... I'm gonna have to say that the EPIC S will have better image quality and be more versatile. In my opinion ... that's a "better camera".

As long as you get the equivalent to what is REDCODE 42 with respect to compression options - as this will be more limited than EPIC X.

I will also tell you that HDRx is bigger deal than most people think. There are just so many times that you will be able to get the shot without waiting to light for fill, etc.

Yes as Mark said no one knows for sure yet (I don't think) whether Epic-S will have some drawbacks as compared to Red MX such as not as many framerate options etc as Jim has kept mum on this. But so far it seems that yes the 12k epic-s will be more powerful than Red MX in almost every way...fingers crossed

I think you are lucky to get that deal...20k for RED One MX with 3 batteries, and Charger, Tripod etc.... Sounds like a very VERY good deal. If you have the cash, and the work lined up, buy it....MX is a great camera, and will be great for many years to come.

All of a sudden I am agreeing with "everyone", how funny is that.

1st: I stand by what I said: 20k is a sweet deal, and if you're prepared to lose 50%in a year: Go buy

2nd: I agree with Mark. Epik-S will most likely be a "better" cam. I fully expect (close to) 2 stops more latitude out of the same sensor, even less noise and a "fatter" image for a number of geeky reasons. And then you'll have HDRx™ and 5k, which only very few people can truly relate to at the moment.

BUT:
3rd, IF you can afford it, and have some gigs:
You can have the R1MX NOW and sell it with loss in a year to finance your Epic-S.
You could keep your sticks and Matte (depending on brand, they're anyhow worth a couple of 1000s), but most importantly: Yopu could practice and work shooting and working on the format for a year.

I sometimes hire people (as I am sure Mark does...)

If I was to choose between

a) the guy who spent a year working his butt off shooting and posting on an R1 MX trying to figure out stuff (hopefully successfully), getting his S35mm and RAW chops up to par on the one hand

or

b) the guy who didn't buy a cool R1 MX kit to get his skills up, because the Epic will be better and it will be delivered in the april 2011-april 2012 timeframe (note Jim's signature. It is there for a reason...)

Guess who would have the best shot at the gig!

Think once more!

Go buy!

Cheers!

G

The main problem is TIME! Of course Epic-S is more cool and in 2012 your RED ONE-MX will be obsolescence in comparison with modern Epic-S! But nobody knows when your will be able to buy Epic-S! May (in the best way) - is only start of production in LIMETED volume (I think 100 items a month) So before 2012 will be produce a very small volume of Epic-S - 700 items (I thinl). And the first demand is I think about 3000-4000 items So nobody knows when you will be able to get you Epic-S. So the risk is minimum 7-8 month and maximum 12-15 month! So if you can wait - about 1 year - wait and you will get the best camera in the world for about 20K without lenses if not - buy RED ONE for about 35K without lenses!

Epic-S VS R1-MX

Epic-S VS R1-MX

Wow, all the feedback has been very helpful.

As for the 5k... The RedOne MX I would be buying is 4.5k. Is there really that big of a difference????

As I mentioned I'd be purchasing from my DP who would turn and purchase Epic-x. So I would still have access to Epic if client needs.

Yall thoughts.... ?

Buy the Red One :

- If you can easily have $20K Now.
- If you are getting paid enough for your jobs in the next 6/12 months to pay back at least 50%.

Wait and buy the EPIC-S :

- If you can't have those $20K easily now and need to save up more money.
- If you can rent a Red One in the meantime. Your DP shouldn't sell his R1 before having his EPIC...

Just my 0.02.

I think you just answered your own question. You're buying from your DP, who will still give you access to Epic. R1 and Epic-x makes a good team. The only problem I see here is if you want to shoot 3D, otherwise, looks like a win-win for both of you.

@stefan.... The Entire $20k is not available in full, but a large deposit and payment arrangement would be made.

Yes, we will have made back minimum 50% of purchase in next 6-12months

@Gunliek .... I see your point in learning the camera and process inside out (although we have shot tons of stuff with it).

@Alexey ... yes time does suck. No one knows for sure when Epic-S will be avilable, and the wait could possibly be very long. Furthermore, not knowing the exact specs is killing me. I would hate knowing that its lacking certain features on the RedOneMx to justify the price difference between models.

My head hurts.... ugh

Looks like you can have a nice payment arrangement. :-) One thing that you don't find very often...
Also keep in mind that the R1 MX will lose about 50% of its value in the next 12 months.

If your jobs can give you back at least 50% ($10,000) in the next 6/12 months,
you need to do the maths and see how much renting an R1 would cost you for doing all these jobs.

EPIC-S production can be late if there's a huge demand for EPIC-X. So expect 6 more months in that case...
By working with your R1, you could pay it back in 18/24 months. Just in time to buy your EPIC-S.

The R1 will have nothing more than the EPIC-S, except more I/O. If you need them, go for an I/O module.
Think 5K, HDRx and small size body. Once you try an EPIC, you will not want to go back to a R1...

RED MX Package??

RED MX Package??

So, i've gotten so many "yes's" and "No's" regarding purchasing used RedMX or waiting (who knows how long) for an Epic-S.

CAn someone tell me if this is a good package deal for $20k?

R1-MX
Tripod
Matte
CF MOdule, 2 gb cards
320gb Red DRive, Red Cradle
5" LCD with arm, 2 sets of rods.

What exactly is the market value of this package today? Is it really realistic to say i can only sell at 50% a year from now?

Is this deal too good to walk away from?
