  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC-S (old Scarlet S35) update...

Is there an update on the brain price of the epic-s. I know the epic-x brain $$$ was increased..

To put the price into perspective, it's best to think of it as:

BRAIN: Approx $12,000
SSD MODULE: $1,500
5" TOUCHSCREEN: $1,600
Titanium Lens Mount: $2,000

POWER OPTION 1: SideHandle + REDvolts 4-pack + Charger: $1,825
POWER OPTION 2: RED Power Pack + 2b-1b cable + RED Quickplate: $2,145

MEDIA: The least you can possibly spend is $950, but most anyone will need a bare minimum of 2x 128GB cards which cost $3,600 as a pair.

Then you need a lens. Will it be Canon or PL?

CANON ROUTE:
TITANIUM CANON MOUNT: $2,000
CANON LENS: Perhaps you already own one...

PL ROUTE: $3,500 for a basic lens.

TOTAL: Between $21,000-$25,000 for the most basic of an EPIC-S setup. Don't be fooled with the $12,000 brain estimate. Count the cost...

This is approx. the same figure I've been calculating. After tax, a basic Epic-S kit comes to a little over $27,000

Yeah I always thought it best, a little over or under the cost of epic X package, roughly be the price of how much the epic-S package will be.

Hey Joseph, good to see your face again on here ;)
What will your option be? Any change of plan since you've been shooting on the red campus?

Yes..and don't forget the prices for some accesories are going up starting Jan. 1 2012 so you must order them by Dec. 31 2011 to get old price.

Maybe most can get by without the Pro I/0 Module...but the others are ones people will be wanting and using. These 4 will go up $1550 total. Think alot of people will go with Scarlet fixed..face it solves your lens budget/problem right out of the box.

Product .................................... OLD PRICE ... NEW PRICE

DSMC Side Handle ........................ $950 ....... $1,750
RED Touch LCD 5" ........................ $1,600 .... $1,950
REDmote ...................................... $550 ....... $750
Pro Battery Module (Dual) ............$1,250 ..... $1,450

Significant Update Post

the two speculated prices for the Epic-S is around 12K for just the brain, and around 16K for a package of some sort

I'd love to know what the packages will be. I'm temped to buy stuff now.

There are lots of us (defined by out low "posts" number that REALLY would like an Epic, but can only afford to get a Scarlet. Then I figure we can learn, get some filming under out belt, and hope that someone will pay us significaly enough that we can buy an Epic...

yeah same here. I'm assuming there will be one or two that are not unlike the ones for the stages of epic-x's except with out the trade in. at least that seems to make the most sense

If you ever have any questions regarding anything RED related when it comes to specs, current release date projections, etc revolving around any camera, I'd be more than happy to get the facts to you...

Thanks Joseph.

I would love to know what you know about EPIC S then? Delivery dates, but more importantly SPECS? I'm eagerly waiting for this? Any news will help as I've searched the forums with the same result. No real info?

Jim has stated that the EPIC-S should have roughly half the horsepower of an EPIC-X&M. With the EPIC's ability to shoot 120 fps in 5K 2:1, I'd expect the EPIC-S to sustain 60 fps in 5K 2:1. In 5K FF, I expect about 48 fps.

The EPIC-S used to be projected as the S35 Scarlet. I believe the addition of HDRx was what changed its course. It was to shoot up to 30fps in 5K. When it was said that the 2/3" Scarlet could receive HDRx for an additional $1,000, Scarlet was already being engineered with the power to shoot 120fps (easier to shoot 60fps of HDRx).

When it was decided that the Scarlet-S35 was to receive HDRx, I'm sure RED knew that 30fps wasn't going to cut it (only effectively 15fps in HDRx). RED then chose to make the difficult decision of approaching the camera altogether...starting with it's chassis. RED made a move to build the foundation upon the same chassis that the EPIC-X was to be built upon. They also began doubling the horsepower they anticipated to enable 5K HDRx at at least 30 fps (which leaves the option to shoot a native 60fps without HDRx).

DISCLAIMER: The above are my own assessments and have not been confirmed as fact online/offline.

Joseph is the man to see about these things! To back what he's saying up, there are also a few posts Jim and Jarred made "recently" (June-July 2011):

My bet is 5K at 60fps at REDCODE 6:1. But I could be wrong...

Jim

I expect the EPIC-S to be in the $12-$13K range.

Jim

Given the electronics constraints, it doesn't look like the Dragon sensor can be an upgrade for EPIC-S. Only EPIC-M and ECIC-X.

Jim

We'll post an EPIC-S update when we have everything in place. Our tendency to "chat along the way" has diminished.

Jim

We are focusing 100% on getting EPIC-X out the door right now.... Let us get through that before we dig into the rest of the roadmap :)

As always, these are open to change at any moment...and they may have already changed without our knowing.

Thanks for the quotes! It's a team effort... ;)

Thanks Joseph & Michael. Very helpful comments without digging in to much in multiple forum posts. My main concern was if it would be true 5K at 24 fps. I am not personally that concerned with overcranking, just the ability to shoot "HOLLYWOOD" cinema quality features on and true 5K resolution.

One more set of questions you guys may be able to help with. 1. Will we see any difference in image quality, dynamic range, etc, from an EPIC M, X or S if shooting at 24 fps at 5K ? 2. If software is limited inside the camera, will advances in firmware offer only limited gains?
