  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC-S (old Scarlet S35) update...

Personally I think 2/3" lenses at 0.95 aperture offer more than shallow enough DOF for 90% of situations but that's just, like, my opinion man.

There is another problem people don't consider. At extreme aperture, light comes in on such an angle that it starts bouncing off the sensor (more a problem for digital cameras). Also, any micro-lens array used tends to get color etc errors at under 1.3 aperture (from memory a long time ago).

4/3rds was designed to overcome these issues (though I do not know if at 0.95 aperture that still applies). I do not know the specifics of that.

Red, is there an official upgrade policy on Red Lens? Has this been asked or discussed? I would love to buy Red glass knowing that when the electronic lens come out I can easily upgrade by trading in my current lens. Any thoughts?

Thanks
Ben

What does anyone think about Epic-S VS Red MX?
I'm hoping I don't have to go all the way up to Epic-X to get the quality that I'm looking for.

You do realize they are ment for two different chip sizes? And why should RED be laboured down with shipping and handling used equipment back and fourth? Sell it and buy what you desire, and let RED focus on inventing the next wonder.

Epic-S should outperform Red 1 MX in most ways that affect image quality, including supporting HDRx and full 5k resolution which R1-MX doesn't do. What we don't know is what maximum frame rates will be.

I think I'm most worried about compression ratios, but we don't know them either lol.
We will know them soon enough I'm sure!

Epic -S will have more processing power than R1-MX, so it seems likely to support at least the same range of compression ratios. That is certainly pretty adequate.

As long as I can get some very sharp, at least as good as R1 quality out of it...that's amazing. Exactly what I need. Can't wait for the specs. I hope they take orders for this little beauty at NAB as well.

Oh god why do they tease us like this.

I'm dying to see some specs and a price for the Epic-S. If this thing is less than $15K there's going to be a huge demand for it.

I'm looking forward to getting the Epic-S. Just say the word and I will place my deposit on one. :thumbup1:

not to change subjects but with the new MacBook Pro that just came out with the new processors will they be enough to handle R3D files?? specially when the Epic S comes out!! that would be a very inexpensive way to shoot and process your footage! The new Port is called Thunderbolt port!! or something like that

My Core2 duo MBP handles R1 MX Files just fine. A quad i7 with faster graphics, and Thunderbolt hooked up to a nice little portable raid will kick ass.
