  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC-S (old Scarlet S35) update...

because if the monstro upgrade is "more expensive" for scarlet than epic, and it still ends up not so feature rich afterwards, you might not be be spending money that wisely in terms of bang for buck.

Good point. But as I see RED, they will always be trying to satisfy the customer to an almost unnatural degree.
So I think it will all be "reasonable". And if not, you could then still opt out, keep the SCARLET as B cam and buy into EPIC.
Even if the sensor upgrade is 20.000$ the cam would still be cheaper as an EPIC. and I don't feel that it makes sense to
option an upgrade of double the price of the original cost of the body. I believe they will take good care of their customers.

cheers!

No room for EPIC-S anymore.

Not necessarily true. An Epic-S could replace the Red One. An Epic with some slightly reduced features, but providing some things missing in the Scarlet-X like higher frame rates. Epic-S could be a nice middle ground between the Epic and Scarlet. Essentially a Red One in a Epic body with 5k, with a bit of an increase in frame rate options. Pretty much take the Scarlet-X and add some of the boards from Epic into it, to increase performance.

If my intuition proves me right (it tends to), we'll probably see all Red One frame rates appearing in the Scarlet in the future. When is the question...

I suspect not... I think it's a hardware issue, not a firmware issue. If the hardware's there, why not ship with it right away?

Development time, testing, optimizing red code data rates, etc... Scarlet's specs "changed overnight", if you remember Jim's post. The first specs are probably the safest, tried and solid ones. Future firmwares after extensive testing might bring this up in a later time...Again, this is obviously just wishful thinking...

Scarlet is hardware limited.. not software limited. Sure.. things can get better with software updates, like we always do.. but a Scarlet isn't going to turn into an Epic with a magic software update.

What can software updates change? ;)

For instance, and I'm just speculating here, perhaps an update to shoot 2.40:1 at 24fps 5k or maybe faster fps at 4k.

One of the benefits of Scarlet and Epic sharing the same basic hardware and software seems to be that as one gets updates the other will benefit from them as well. Another smart move on Red's behalf.

Match Lens app ... You can intercut footage, most movie theatres have at best a 2K projector, that said, 4K should be and look amazing, Scarlet has great compression for the sensor and kills everything other than the EPIC and upcoming TiTAN... Wait was I supposed to say that... Juss kidding Jarred ... Titan is a planet not a camera...

Right on. I haven't followed the firmware upgrades to closely so I'm a little less knowledgeable on that front. I was reading on the newest one the other day over in the Epic thread that seemed to get the touchscreen working better.

Man am I excited. I'll do some searching around but I did see on twitter last night there was some work being done on an HDRx upgrade that may allow it at 4K or did I read it wrong?
