Hi

How long till playback is available on EPIC? I mainly shoot TV commercials which are drama based so I really need playback and my Epic should turn up any day now.

If this is going to take awhile what are most people using to get around this? IE Cheap and nasty HDMI recorder thats good enough to see that the talent in the action
is ok.

Thanks in advance

Pop the SSD out of the camera and watch the playback on a computer. Yeah, it takes a few extra seconds, but it's an excuse to roll media more often. Not the most ideal on a fast-paced commercial shoot, but this is still faster than fumbling around with external recorders for playback. Doing it while rotating media, you can always review while the camera rolls another take to a different card too. If you have enough SSD media, you don't always need to offload and reformat if that saves you time.

Hopefully playback will arrive soon. I think it's number-1 on their to-do list.

Will there be clip list functionality in the playback menu on the EPIC?

...and will it ever happen on the R1?

Jim and other RED TEAM members told at least hundred times this is #1 on their todo list...
if this is too much important for you get Teradek CUBE.

Did you look at the date of when his question was asked?

Not possible for some of us working in remote places. I am seriously beginning to wonder what is happening with Playback. I talk very often with other Epic owners, and Playback is ALWAYS the first topic of every conversation.

Playback is nice
Playback is good
Playback is fun
Playback makes me smile

BUT stable builds make me even happier.

Playback seem to be harder than we tend to think. Looking at the short history of R1 - Alexa - Epic
It's taken some time from release of cam until playback and audio have functioned.

@ Tom
If you can bring a laptop in the field, you should be good.
Played back realtime at 1/4th rez on a 3 year old MacBookPro from 5k and the SSD the other day.

If an on-set laptop is not an option, then I dunno

I shot for twenty plus years before Red w/o playback and it never slowed me down :)

Isnt that what video assist if for on commercials?

Ditto...

If you were shooting on film, you wouldn't be able to even view by removing media and playing back on a macbook. I think it's in our best interest to be patient for the playback and have a camera that functions properly.
The last thing I need is playback on my Epic during a beta period and lose half of my takes because it isn't stable,

I think the vast majority of us are fine with waiting as long as it takes for playback if it means stable builds.
Video assist is used, even now, on decent budget jobs with cams that do have playback and do have a clip list function.

This is an old thread I found after putting in "EPIC" "PLAYBACK" and "CLIP LIST" for keywords in a search.

I decided to add to it because I didn't want to start a new thread to ask about the EPIC eventually having the clip list function.

Does anyone happen to know the answer to that one?

Playback is a difficult thing. It took Arri a year to get it in to the Alexa for good reason. It took a year for the RED ONE. Expect playback in EPIC soon.

We all want it. It is coming.

Jim

"playback" It sounds so easy when you say it. :) especially compared to what else the little magic box is capable of.

Forgive my naive-ness, but if the Epic-X is on the brink of release, and the Epic-X differs from the Epic-M in that the Epic-M is machined and comes with the understanding that the users who buy it have to deal with features not yet enabled.... doesn't that mean that the Epic-X is factory produced and has all the features enabled?

Isn't that what sets the two apart?

Meaning that playback is almost synonymous with the "Epic-X release"?

DANKE!

What makes it difficult? Is this one of the biggest hurdles in designing a camera system?

I bought a Bon 17 inch Monitor that has an internal record feature. It records H264 onto a SD card.

Not great, but pretty good.
