  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC-M...

I can see R1 MX after the release of EPIC-S selling for $10k or less and unless the cost of MXing a R1 drops then a R1 M will be $5-7k. With EPIC-S at $12k why would you pay more unless there is a shortage of both R1's and Epic-S....

Maybe a little off-topic and could be moved to another/new thread? Just like you users, we like to be able to keep things relevant in each thread for when we are mining...

My bad... i started it... didint mean to let it get so out of hand...

You'll continue seeing EPIC-M releases happening... actually two have been sent out (006 & 007). Gibby is next. Things will start to roll pretty quickly after that.

Jim

Steve,

Great news! Congrats!

Hey how will you work with the Nikon lenses right up?

Is the Red/Nikon mount ready?

Sorry been in the field to long to catch up to the posts!

Back to the wilds in a week. Let's touch base, Hugs to Pam!

Hi Brent! Thanks so much for all your help the other day. I was amazed by the amazing way you handled a delicate situation. Kudos...

Hey Kennan & Karen! Looks like you've been out in the wild getting some great images - pretty much normal life for you two :)

No, as far as I know the Red Nikon mount isn't ready yet. I don't know when it may be available, but I'd imagine Red is paying close attention to the need for it among hybrid cine style and mobile EFP style shooters like you and me, who also shoot tons of stills too. Shooters who use 35mm still lenses on Red cameras (specifically Nikon and Canon) are now, and IMO will increasingly become, a very sizable portion of this overall image creating industry.

The PL mount is ready right now. I'd guess the Canon mount must be close to being ready - that's a pure guess. As you know, beyond the kit of good Nikon lenses (mostly zooms, but some primes) I regularly use on Red One, I also have a full kit of Canon L series zooms (16-35, 24-70, 70-200) that I regularly use on my Canon 5D. Obviously I'm way anxious to have the quick option to use both my Canon and Nikon lenses on Epic. I rarely use cine lenses in my usually very mobile EFP style of work - too much bulk, weight, expense, need for a matte box, etc - IMO they're just not practical for use in mobile EFP style work where eye focusing (and now selectable AF capability with the new Red cameras) and screw-on filters are desirable for mobility and quickness. When Red ships the new Red electronic mount and their electronic zooms I'll definitely buy those and use them extensively. Personally I expect the Red electronic zooms to outperform Canon and Nikon zooms on Epic and Scarlet interchangeable. Just a hunch...but an educated hunch at that.

How cool will it be in the mobile type of work you and me do to be able to quickly switch mounts between Nikon, Canon, Red electronic, and occasionally PL, quickly re-set flange focal depth on the camera, then choose our daily lens kit accordingly :)

Looking forward to me and Pam hooking up with you and Karen for some seriously cool wildlife, adventure travel, actions sports, and doc shooting with Epics :hurray:

Steve,

That is so wild, I am looking forward to be way stealthy with the Epic in the field and Nikon/Canon glass!

So, can I imagine you will start with Epic 0008 (I am jealous like you got the best wave of the day, Man RIDE IT with style) using a Red PL zoom like 18-150???? Or do you have a PL mounted Nikon????

Hey, The surf last week was really going off and reminded me of the last time you were up to film! SWEET!

This warm winter has me go'in crazy film'in swell!!!!! We will be back from downunder in April, plan an Epic surf film! Seriously, DUDE!

Any housing news for Epic????

Life is Shaka!

Kennan,

Here's the skinny:

Initial field testing with Epic M-#8 will necessarily be via PL mount lenses - not my first choice, but it is what it is. I have no PL mounted Nikon, but I do have one PL mounted Canon - my stock Canon FD 150-600 f5.6L zoom with a Century PL mount conversion. That lens covers 5k, and as you know it is a killer lens for nature and sports. Beyond that for initial field testing we'll be using a Red Pro Zoom 17-50, a set of Red Pro Primes, a set of Master Primes, and probably a few other PL mount lenses.

As soon as we have a Canon mount we'll launch into shooting with my Canon zooms. Then as soon as we have a Nikon mount we'll also launch into using my Nikon zooms and some primes.

I do miss the Central Coast surf and those trips up to Santa Cruz to shoot Steamer Lane with you. Fun times! But having my studio right here in the southern Rockies, near red rock country and so many National Parks, has its definite benefits too. When I need a surf fix its only about 7 hours drive :)

Red has posted that several underwater housing manufacturers have housings for Epic in their plans. As you know, I don't shoot underwater, but definitely shoot on the water surface - thus I'll naturally have a lightweight custom aluminum surf zone housing made for Epic and Scarlet Fixed.

Beyond Epic M-#8, I have two Stage 2 Epic X on order, plus I'll be getting a few Scarlet Fixed too. Fun times ahead my friend :)

Steve,

Thanks for the updates, you know how it is from the field! I appreciate knowing your interested in the stealth mode and the Nikon/Canon lens opportunities!

Don't get me wrong, I would like to use the Red Primes, but the 35mm fast lenses for field are the best for composition, focal length, and weight!

I will mostly be interested in your results from FPS rates and shutter speeds. Wildlife capture in the WILD is so particular to getting the once in a liftime observation that it must be instinctual to film. I am very interested in pre programming and quick fast action settings. Then being able to switch to record establishing clips and pan clips after recording the action.

Thank you for keeping us vicariously learning while we wait our turn!

With RESPECT,

Kennan

Kennan,

Yup...my second name is "stealth mode"

I 100% agree...for mobile sports, wildlife, and docs, good lightweight zooms are far more preferable than primes. Like you, I use my zooms as variable primes to re-frame/shoot, re-frame/shoot, etc. As you well know, walking to each successive framing in those genres (and some others too) can:

1) Cause you to lose the moment and the shot
2) Potentially get you injured or killed

Neither of those results sound like much fun to me...:(

For mobility sake in those genres I've always used a kit of good 35mm still zooms on Red One - and will continue to do so with Epic. Like you, 2.8 is plenty fast for what I regularly shoot. In fact, a huge percentage of what I shoot is at apertures between 4 and 11. Only in some extreme twilight or sunrise shots do I even need 2.8 - and now Epic is excellent in low light, so that opens up new options.

You know I push the boundaries of FPS and shutter speeds - always have and always will. That suits the genres we work in. You can expect to see me do the same with Epic.

Good shootin' ahead Braddah!

Hey RED team I was curious to know if we might be able to get anoter update on Epic M production timetables? It's been a few weeks now and I was just curious since it sounded like Gibby has his sent out. Does this mean production might be gearing up? Thanks!

More EPIC-Ms will be shipped soon.

Jim

Jim, you previously were hoping for end of February shipment of EpicX. Can we get an update on EpicX? How is that line setup looking? Anxiously awaiting that all important "You have 30 days to pay and get your EpicX" email :-)

Keslow Camera just took delivery of their first 2 Epic-M's as well.

EPIC-M owners are in the same boat as early RED ONE owners... firmware upgrades and features being enabled on the fly. There is an added responsibility buying an EPIC-M.

Jim

I know Dino gets his next week... :-)
