  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC-M...

He he...maybe so Ketch! The back-story behind that is that when I first started into the motion media business I made up my mind to figure out a way to make a living doing the things I love to do in my time off work. So that's why I concentrated into the mobile style and genres I work in. If someone's heart is in their work, their attitude is much better - and they do better work.

Over the years I've been unbelievably fortunate to make a living documenting what is essentially my own chosen lifestyle - sports, wildlife, travel, nature, cultures, etc. If I had it to do over again I'd do it the exact same way.

When I get asked by beginners in this business "What should I work into?", I have a question for them, which is "What do you love to do in your time off work?". When they describe what they do in their time off work, I just tell them "Now figure out how to earn your living in this industry in productions that profile your off-work lifestyle - then you'll love every day, your heart will be into your work, you'll do great work, and if you do what you do well enough for long enough the financial rewards will also come".

I'm singing to the choir now Ketch, because I know you work in the genres you love, and earn your living exactly as I described above.

Professional life is full of choices and forks in the road - wisdom dictates that someone should choose where their real passion is, and then go for it!

It's funny, my line of work is the exact opposite - fashion, glossy music video, glossy super-planned ads - my idea of appealing wilderness is the French Riviera or British countryside - and yet your attitude and motivations are exactly the same. My wife and I work on what we love, and we feel that's a big part of why we are successful.

Thanks for sharing that Rob. It definitely sounds like your passion for your work has been the real vehicle to your fulfillment and success. Well done...

My wife is a still photographer who also has worked with me for many years. Together we've lived a story like yours - though like you say we work in different ends of this business.

As we all know, there are many niches, styles, and genres in this industry - but passion and tenacity are critical elements for success no matter which path we choose.

Hey Gibby! Looking forward to all of your adventures on your EPIC-X. It's great what you have given back to the community over the years.

I hope to work together on future projects.

Thank you Casey...

It was great having you on my L.A. Red Test team back in December 2007 - the first organized field test of shipping Red One cameras.

You're one of the people at the top of my list to look to for support. Hopefully we'll be working together soon.

Gibby Promised me hes gonna shoot some incredibly stuff and share it with all as soon as #8 gets in his hands .. Can't wait to see.

Man I can't wait to see what you shoot Gibby. Have you got anything planned to test her on? Or do you just plan on doing it true DOCO style and take her to the demons mouth and see if she shivers?

On a side note if you are quick enough to get some stock shots up on your site I imagine you would get quite a few sales from people all round the world wanting to closely scrutinise the cameras visual capabilities before its official release.

Truly exciting times.

Gibby,
I want to add my thanks to your input in this community as well. I've posed a few questions your way over the past couple of years as I've faced some new challenges with our Red One. We've chosen to go the SLR lens route for the most part, so your input has been much appreciated and very valuable as well as we've navigated an ever-changing landscape that is the motion media industry.
Can't wait to hear your thoughts and see your images from the Epic!

Thanks for the encouragement guys

Zero hour approaches....:)

Steve, are you planning to take EPIC underwater?

Oh yeah...not immediately, but at some point in the near future. The world's first Red underwater housing was designed in early September 2007 by Mike Hastings using my Red 0008 as the model. Then right after the housing was finished the world's first Red underwater footage was shot with Red 0008. As I remember, that was September 20, 2007.

I don't personally shoot underwater, but I've shot extensively through my career with cameras in housings at the water surface - action sports (surfing, Jetski, rafting, etc), and wildlife.

Not sure exactly when I'll take Epic into the water, but I guarantee you me and my crews will use both Epic and Scarlet in the water extensively in the coming months.

I'll take Epic-008 underwater for you. I'll even supply the zip-lock baggie. :)

Seriously though, can't wait to see what you shoot with #8!

Gibby, I'll pay the airfare for you or a trusted associate to bring #008 to ft. Lauderdale like we did last time. I already have ball park mockups, so with a couple days of preprep before they come, I think I can have a fully functioning housing to take back within two days.

If Jarred could send a working or nonworking version of the Redmote to me, I could have that housed beforehand although I can get pretty close with pictures and drawings and finish when it gets here, just would be less stress to do in advance.

Question for anyone, does the epic allow start/stop through the 4pin connector like the Red1?

Thanks Jeff...not for the baggie offer (he he), but for the well wishes :)

To document a cool point in Red history, I'll shoot some stills of Epic #8 sitting next to Red One #8 - essentially they're sequential incarnations of the same overall dream of Jim.

I also have a small crew arranged that will document Epic #8 in action:

- Someone shooting stills of the field work
- Someone using Red #8 to document Epic #8 in action
- Someone using a run n' gun video camera to document lots of cool sequences of field work

One other thing:
As a Viet Nam war veteran and lifelong outdoors-man, I'm well experienced in self defense and outdoor survival. We don't anticipate any security problems at all during our field tests - but trust me, we're prepared should there be any :)

Thank you kindly for that offer Mike. It was very cool working with you the first time around with Red One #8.

Let me do some thinking on that, and I'll get back to you to talk over the possibilities. I believe you still have my email address - it hasn't changed. Lets talk via email and phone.

Cheers...

Steve, I've learned so much from your posts, and just want to send out a thanks for all the time you put in to helping us all. It's greatly appreciated.
