  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC-M Monochrome

Well done Red! Very nice addition to the lineup.
I agree that the fashion guys will (or should be) all over this.
Jarred, "lose", not "loose" (unless it's wiggling around) :)
Cheers,
Harry

They are not user swappable.. and the firmware code is completely different ( all the color stuff removed )

well , wouldn't be as easy as update the firmware to transform it in B&W ? aside for the OLPF that should change as well (but does make huge difference ?)

i believe this is the kind of firmware lic upgrade you could charge 1000 usd .... anybody would buy it ....

There would be no physical bayer filter in front of the sensor either for a monochrome camera, not just a different OLPF -- and the removal of color filters is what causes an increase in sensitivity. If you don't remove the bayer filter, then you might as well just convert to b&w in post.

If you don't understand the purpose of this camera, read this: http://blog.mingthein.com/2012/05/27/leica-m-monochrom-vs-d800e/

Meh... Not really the best comparison. I think it would have been a lot more valuable to see the Leica M compared directly to the new Leica M-M. Or at least adapt a single lens to be used between the two cameras for the test. At first glance, one would really like to think the Leica M is blowing the Nikon out of the water in terms of resolvability and sharpness, especially since its images were being up-scaled for most comparisons. However, they put a notoriously shitty lens on that Nikon which makes excessively soft images with poor contrast, while the Leica used one of the finest lenses in the world.

That said, on a per-pixel basis, the Leica should win out if all other things are equal - same lens, etc.. There's still a lot possible with the processing of the image and the extra resolution gained from the Nikon D800 can go a long way toward making a more equivalent final image between the two.

Anyway, drifting OT... I'm liking the EPIC-M/M! I don't have enough reasons to justify getting one myself, but I definitely support this! :)

Ansel Adams just sat up in his grave with a big smile on his face.

I'm with Jeff - can't justify owning one, but think it is VERY cool that RED is doing it and it will be available for rent when we need it.

Jeff I definitely agree that it's not very useful or scientific comparison. He clearly goosed it in favor of the M-M with the lens choices (although, to be fair, I think he's pretty up-front about that in the text of the piece, even disclaiming to go by his words more than the images).

But if they'd both been bayer sensors, I doubt even putting a Master Prime on the 18MP and a Samyang on the 36MP would've made the former come out on top (well, that might be hyperbole :P ). To me that general point is the interesting take-away.

a b&w red epic...!.....red really keeps surprising everyone.....hope someone uses this on a indian movie...

3-strip digital?
We already had that, and still do, with 2/3" broadcast cameras. Prism block and 3 CCDs.
I brought this up on dvxuser six years ago, and a few more times in the early days of reduser. The company line was that the quality was better with a single CMOS sensor.
I actually think there may not be enough space behind the lens to put a 3 color prism. Or to put it a different way, 52mm flange focal depth is too short to fit the prism block between the sensors and the rear element of the lens.
Although there should be room for a half-silvered mirror (you could not use the Optimo digital lenses but any lens that clears a mirror-shutter would work) which in theory works, since we have film cameras with mirror-shutters, and then you could have a 2-color system. I'm not sure how much that would improve anything, if at all.
Better yet, instead of HDRx with "magic motion" and the post work involved in blending two frames shot at different shutter speeds, you could have two frames at the SAME shutter speed, but at fixed (different) ISOs- one 800, say, and one 50. Simpler post might mean wider acceptance of HDR in motion picture production.
Or you could just use one sensor and choose your "true" working ISO.
Cheers,
Harry

I used the IR Red One to shoot extensive sequences for a movie coming out next year. It's an amazing type of cinematography. A lot of the rules we tend to live by go out the window when shooting IR.

Jarred, do you have any plans, as of right now, to convert one of these monochrome cameras to IR and rent it out?

How do you configure red to shoot on infra red ?

What is entirely RED, and yet black and white all over? Answer: The Epic M Monochrome.

Outstanding, RED.
