  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC-M Monochrome

I never pipe in on these threads but Jarred, you should make all the Red bits grayscale on the camera. It would look bad ass.

Infrared must not be too far away then. I believe, SI have already provided non bayered SI2K camera heads as special orders for panchomatic and IR applications so it naturally follows that the RED camera famly will do this too if not already.

What is the chance that somebody is going to fit a OLPF for the B/W sensor on a colour camera just to see what happens because they may be able to.

We have Infrared cameras for Rent already :)

What are the chances of a monochromatic sensor we can drop into our current epic-m's? Assuming they are user swappable.

They are not user swappable.. and the firmware code is completely different ( all the color stuff removed )

Terry, there are no color filters over the photosites so there is no way to colorize it in post. It is pure B&W.

Justin - I understand there are no colors embedded in the signal. However, I am imagining colorizing images "from scratch" in a grading or Photoshop-like app. Obviously time intensive, but the technology that already allows complex selections is pretty impressive; new, powerful tools might just make it possible.

I was just having a debate about B&W with a friend, how incredibly ironic that this just popped up. Leave it to RED to keep pushing the envelope. It's probably not very realistic, but a Scarlet version would be very appreciated. Either way, my hat is yet again off to you sirs.

Wow, Jarred, very cool!

Curious, - and just playing around here - but in theory, could an HDRx mode be used at high frame rates to expose for 3 separate RGB images and then have an algorithm applied to create full-res color images from it?

I suppose it would need a very fast set of RGB filters spinning in front of the lens. :-)

Jarred,

Red is renting infrared cameras? Or am I missing something.

Also when can we see Dragon images?

That is correct. All IR blocking has been removed from the sensor so it capture all available light..you can block visible with an additional filter.

I'm currently shooting a (hopefully it will be) pretty high profile indie movie in black and white using my EPIC and RED MX. We're in the middle of production, and I've built in a desaturated high contrast look setting into the camera to play with. I've also shot some fun music videos in black and white recently on the EPIC ( http://jeremyosbern.com/blog/2012/07/16/new-icky-blossoms-music-video-perfect-vision/ ).

If you want someone else (in addition to Fincher) to do a test shoot with the new camera, and to compare the results to shooting MX for B&W, I'd love to use it when we get to the pickups for the current movie (which is actually coming up pretty soon, as we're wrapping principal in a little over a week)! :)

I can't release them publicly yet, but if you contact me, I could send you some frame grabs, if that could sway you into letting me play with one!

What is the market for IR cameras? It is wildlife filming (night)?

We built them for a movie awhile back.. specific night time scene.. horror film..

People are not used to seeing high quality, high resolution Infrared video.. IR combined with lit Visible light makes people's skin look bat-shit crazy.

Which reminds me.. way back 6 or 7 years ago when we brought up the very first sensor prototype in a box that could turn on it didn't have an IR filter on it. the 2nd thing we shot was a pair of Oakleys.. and it was pretty cool... it shot right through the plastic frames. I wonder if I have any of those images around.
