2.8" touchscreen LCD in action...

This little screen is so BADASS... 840x480 24bit Capacitive Touchscreen with an incredibly wide color gamut.

damn, this is getting exciting!

If im not mistaken that'll only be an option with the Scarlet Fixed. none of the other models will be capable of such a feature.

But please Jarred if I'm wrong correct me, as I don't want to mis-inform anyone.

The touch focus will work on Epic and Scarlet. You just obviously need a lens capable of autofocus Canon/Nikon/RED, and the appropriate mount.

I have to admit, given the price, I wasn't expecting half the # of pixels of the similar-sized LCDs on the latest DSLRs. But given that those aren't touchscreens, are absolutely useless for color accuracy, and probably have a latency of like 2 weeks, I'm still very pleased by this.

Is the 5" also 840x480?

the OG 5.6 is 1600 which is still out of my 1000 ish price range

Im prettty sure you'll find 5.6" screens in the second hand market fitting your budget. My 5.6" screen is starting to show its age (minor scratches and blemishes) so I´ll probably sell it pretty cheap once Epic/Scarlet accessories are released.

It's quite interresting that in the November 30th announcement a screenshot of the lcd in action is showed in 800x480 resolution. Almost spot on. I hope the screen isn't too small to work with and do focuspull on. Hope I'll be plesently surprised (like always).

RED is making RED FF35, Canon and Nikon electronic mounts that will all support touch focus tracking.

I think you're mistaken - most DSLRs show their screen resolution in dots, not pixels. So the numbers are 3 times as big (because they're counting the red, green and blue subpixels separately).

Say, for the 5D and 7D: 921,000 dots = (640 * 480 = 307, 200 pixels) * 3

RED 2.8" LCD: 1,209,600 dots = (840 * 480 = 403, 200 pixels) * 3

So it turns out the RED LCD is actually a bit higher resolution.

Wow, cool, I had no idea, I thought they were 921,000 pixels. Thanks for the info!

That makes the 2.8" Touchscren seem even more awesome than before!

Stephen is correct.. the 921,000 dots is a clever marketing ploy.. those screens are just VGA screens ( 640x480.)

The new 5" screen also sports a 840x480 resolution with 24bit color, and 11ms response time, and the new 9" is a full 1280x768 24 bit touchscreen with 1000:1 contrast and 170x170 degree viewing angle... you really need to see these thing in person.

And Trust me.. for a 2.8" screen with this high resolution, focus is alot easier than you could imagine.

That's good to know about the 2.8"

The 9" is listed as TBD, and the 7" current model is $2500. If the 9" is gonna be like >$3000 then for me I'm probably gonna have to go with the smallHD and use either the 2.8" for what it can do, or, just not use touch and use the redmote. While I'd love the simplicity of the Red LCD, for the larger models, the 5 inch not having greater resolution doesn't make it very appealing to me. I bet that 9 is gonna look great though :)

Sorry for the confusion, Jarred.

You're making a good case for the 2.8" being plenty for me. I was planning to get the 5".

Woo!! $700 closer to affording my 2/3" Scarlet.

Only question now is what framerates and bitrates I'd be able to do without getting the SSD module, but I'm betting that won't be answerable until much closer to release.

If I remember correctly someone (Stuart or Deanan or somebody) said you can achieve the burst rate on any media for a short time period (since it must buffer it to internal memory or something). Is this still the case?

As for sustained, looking at the RED ONE rates I'm guessing that current CF cards should be able to do at least 45 to 65fps at 3K (depending on the REDCODE level). Hopefully they will get much higher frame rates as better cards come along in the future!

I thought so.

I know the feature was mentioned last year and was checking as this, IMHO, will be a game changer and make the focus pulling a lot simpler for the small crews that we work with.

I think that the 2.8" touchscreen could be a great little second monitor to have for those that don't like a EVF to look through like myself.

Have a 2.8" for view as an operator and a 5" touchscreen for touch focus pulling would be ideal!

I don't have any doubts that they will rock. Waiting for 9" pricing...
