  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC HDR...

Jim, have you considered going by a new name? There is a man you may or may not have heard of: Houdini. ;} He was a magician, and made a lot of people happy. I have seen the very locks he used in his wizardy, and they are imbued with a certain kind of mystical quality when the light catches them just so. Same feeling I get when I see a Red One.

Though I know there is some kind of logic and science behind all of this, you've just made me a believer in magic.

Thanks, Jim. Congratulations. :}

Jim

Sounds like a double data stream at two different exposures/iso then combined into one super image. I'm sure it's a bit more complicated, but really cool tec.

Have we seen a pics of the new, longer body Epic case?

I can't recall any having been posted yet...

HDRx mode looks awesome! Congrats on the recent announcements. I was going to ask awhile ago about a built in bracketing setting for stills mode. Now, I guess you can just dial in the DR needed.

Are we still on track for stage II before 2011?

Thanks again for all the hard work guys. The are many, like me, eagerly waiting for our chance to work with Epic.

I'm sure you're testing this and all will be revealed at your formail unveiling. So I completely understand if I just need to be patient, but... are there any negative reprecusions for skin tone using HDRx. A highly poplular use of this across pretty much all categories of shooting would be be backlit medium shots in daylight exteriors, relying on the HDRx to both keep the skin tone where it's needed, and hold highlights in the sky. Or day interior MS/CUs using HDRx to hold window detail without losing skintone goodness on talent. OK, so actually there are a million potential applications. But these seem key for me.

I have an EPIC here with me and I just don't need anything else. The "if I just had ____ (fill in the blank) is gone. I just might retire on this one and go to Fiji.

Jim
Wow RED and The Foundry's powers combined? That's great news.

I've been holding off on buying a digital camera and switching from film until the DSMC series was announced. Scarlet FF35 sounded like the camera I had always been waiting for and expecting to be delivered. My film camera was built in 1981, it's older than I am and I've had it my entire life. Why? Because it's able to do everything and more than I've needed. My hope is to not *need* to buy another camera--of course with the the rate of progress a little handheld will have more resolution, DR and cool adaptive focus features, but I think we're getting to the point where "image capture" as defined as a 2D image is getting to where it just needs to get smaller and have longer battery life.

Which is a really long winded way of saying: Please bring HDRx to the FF35 Scarlet. Even if it means raising the price on the brain by 50% to $15k. Monstro is +2 stops right? 13 + 2 + 6... 21 has always been the dream-- assuming this actually works as well in motion as you say it does.

If you want to absolutely blow our socks off I have 2 words for you: Fire Dancers (@180* shutter).

You are really going to love this. We are working with the Foundry for the HDRx mode. Graeme and the Foundry boys make a powerful combination.

Jim

Awesome...but please make it Windows and Mac compatible if it's in the form of a post production plugin.....

While there will always be "more"... EPIC is a game changer.

You will likely not ever need more. You will get it because we will make it. But EPIC is the ONE that changed everything. I have seen a lot. I own over 1000 cameras. EPIC is the one that will change history. It is the one that covers everything. Size, price, performance. If I died and went (somewhere)... I will be content. EPIC will get to market.

Jim

Simply stunning. Congratulations to Jim, and to everyone involved!

Obviously, Jim is overwhelmed by what his team has accomplished, and after having personally witnessed much of the development of the program along the way, from prototypes of the first RED ONE until now, I have to say I agree - EPIC is poised to turn the entire industry upside down. I think I made a post on REDUser about a year ago - something to do with the real Tidal Wave to come... Well, folks...

Brace yourselves...

What I think is completely stunning is the speed of these changes. I mean, a few years ago RED was a "scam" and now (soon!) we are at the tipping point where digital will truly come into it's own. Personally, I think EPIC will be remembered for times to come (and that's not asslicking, that's pure observational - which is even more stunning than anything else!).

As a guy standing on the outside looking in, I can just say this -- you've gotten a long way and done inroads everywhere, but this is where the fun and the crazyiness will get turbo charged! EPIC will be widely used and frankly, I can't imagine anyone who won't want to use one. Alternatives will be there of course - but I think EPIC will be crowned king, which is quite a testament to all the hard work and dedication Jim has given to RED and how he's turned out one hell of a band of crazy rockstars (I am looking at you Graeme!), not to mention all the insane office working RED people (who drinks what exactly to stay awake 25/7?:yikes:). EPIC all the way and, ehum, bring me that monstro in time for my epic masterpiece of a film, pretty please? I promise I'll give you associate producer credit *cough* :w00t: (say a few years from now, yea?).

All in good time I guess :cheers2:

(disclaimer: my "epic" "masterpiece" might just - or not - have been a joke; you decide!) :reddevil:

YEAH BABY YEAH!!!!

Sorry... but I was living in a world where HDR was limited to 24fps because I didn't want to feel heart-broken. I know slow-mo isn't everything, but 48fps... sexy time!

Now let's set two up for 48fps HDR 3D and finish at 4k!!!!

:emote_head_explode:

Director
Hey, let's rent a slow-mo camera for this one and over-crank the shi# out of it

DP
We can do 500% slower motion with our regular cameras

Director
No, no, no, you can't fool me... We are not shooting at "VGA resolution" or whatevers

DP
...we don't have to drop resolution. We just need to light within 13.5 stops

Director
Well, fine. We'll do it your way... as long as I get to ride on my Super Techno Crane ;)

Something tells me Jim was not too thrilled they hit the RED ONE's processing limit so quickly the first time around.. And this time he said to all involved "I need some processing power to add stuff this time.. Not just a little either.. I want Epic to do what the RED ONE did in its sleep and then be ready for more.. I want space for what we've not thought of yet!"

Looks like they've got it!

Jay

Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you... and did I mention? Thank you..
